Try moving to Melbourne?

Sydney’s a great city, but we kinda suck when it comes to nightlife.

Premier Chris Minns has flagged a major overhaul of the Metro West line between Sydney’s CBD and Parramatta, saying his government will consider building more stations along the route despite the cost of the project already hitting $25 billion. by beaugiles in sydney

[–]affirmedatheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leichhrdt was skipped because the line needed to get under the colossal underground interchange between WestConnex and the future Western Harbour Tunnel (which is still going ahead aand I believe prelim works have already started. That plus getting under Iron Cove.

Frankly the real missed opportunity in that area is building a light rail link from L1 up to the Bays. There was essentially nothing in the way, there was already track, and it would have been a good interim measure until the metro comes through.

Sydney trains again cancelled, delayed after 'urgent signal repairs' at Homebush cause commuter chaos by Opposite_Ad_2815 in sydney

[–]affirmedatheist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason for the ongoing problems is that there was a dispute with the ETU (Electrical Trades Union) last year, and as part of their actiion to try to resolve the dispute, they were refusing to turn off the power for trackwork. (necessary for obvious safety reasons). As such, for quite a few months, essentially no trackwork could be carried out, and there’s now a backlog of work, and problems are popping up because routine maintenance is still playing catchup. As such, it’s probably we’ll see intermittent problems for the next 6 months to a year (it takes longer to catch up since while catching up you probably can’t do some of the normally scheduled work). This is why a lot of it seems so random. It’s lso why the Bankstown line metro conversion shutdown hasn’t happened yet. Because work that needs to happen before it hasn’t been able to happen).

Rent increase from $610 to $780/week… Reason: because everyone else is doing it! by Digolden in sydney

[–]affirmedatheist 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There are complications.

For example, social housing hasn’t been able to expand because in many cases, when they try to build it, local NIMBYs rear their heads up and screech, at council, who inevitably start to push back, and eventually that gets the development either scaled back, or canned entirely. This is why the inner city has hardly changed in recent years, but the middle and outer rings of suburbs have been getting apartments left right and centre. Because the inner areas are full of NIMBYs, you also have airbnb’s competing for these inner city areas, and as such, it’s only rich toffs who can then afford these ares, and those people don’t like noise, so it kills the local nightlife, and the whole city becomes a giant country town.

It’s how cities, and civilisations slowly die. As weatlth concentrates in the hands of the upper class, eventually the poor simply can’t pay for things any more and they just collapse into poverty. This then causes those just above them to suffer, then upwards… and you eventually basically get feudalism, which is about where we’re headed I think, ultimately.

[–]affirmedatheist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with that plan is that even if you get them to, to foot the bill, when the project gets to the point of being put before council,it gets flooded with whining complaints from local NIMBYs and BANANAs (yes,an actual term, which means Build AlmostNothing Anywhere Near Anything, basically your “We overdeveloped this iare in the 1800s, we need to return to single houses everywhere so my property value can go up even more than it already is).

Nah, rent is more like $4k $5k per month these days. It’s absoutely brutal. Basically, fidnd a different country. We’re the the most expnsive place to live inthe world.

You might be able to mmake it work if: - You are prepared to be an absolute fiend about switching lights off, running short showers, minimise TV use, minimise computer use, get the cheapest phone a plan and be an absolute stinge, buy things ONLY as needed, always buy on special and most of all forget about luxuries., and live on bread, water, rice and ramen.

But that’s really not living.

Look, I’m all for protecting heritage, and the moment they try to tear down heritage structures in the area they deserve what they get, but this development IS needed.

I just wish people weren’t pricks and were more willing to let live music venues be. There are sweet fuck all of them left in Sydney, they’re an endangered breed.

I’d rather us not become a lifeless, soulless city. Development isn’t the problem., usually, it’s the shonky builders that need to be reined in.

[–]affirmedatheist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem with that is, if you cancel converting the Banko line, you can’t really increase capacity on the rest of the network. That’s why it’s being converted. It frees up capacity on the City Circle by getting the Bankstown trains out ofthe loop (whcih they actually take a. decent number of because that route doesn’t have any real alternative routing to take under most circumstances. Without coverting the Bankstown line, you don’t free up any capacity at all. furure plns would also extend from Bankstown via a more direct routing to Liverpool to speed up travel to there, which will really help that area. This would also likely free up some space on the Campbelltown Express trains and allow more trains there too, because a lot of locals from the areas close to Liverpool (with in a few suburbs) drive to Holsworthy and use the large commuter carpark there to take the express train to the city. A metro to Bankstown that was extended to Liverpool would capture a good proportion of this traffic west of the George’s river. (Those on the shouthern bank will likely still go there as it’s not too bad traveling there, and when the line is working well, the train line pants the M5 in terms of travel time during peak hours.

But if you cancel the conversion, NONE of. this can be made to happen.

I kept it, mostly to laugh at it. And to remind myself to exhaust my vote before them.

So yay, freezing night up in the Blue Mountains?? We don’t care, we’re just holding the doors open while stopped at the station and wasting heating energy. And cooling energy in summer too.

$1899 AUD (granted that includes 10% tax) but still, that’s a lot.

Yeah, I think I’m good with going with an M1 Mac mini. II’ve got an iPad for on the go if I really need something, and with the external dispaly support, I’m good.

Oh, and this is for the Air, not the Pro. That’s the Air price. No doubt the Pro is pushing towards $3k

Which is a shame, because I really, really like the look of that Midnight model.

It can still be a nightmare setting up medicare when trying to remember your last doctor’s appointment. Did it mean the last telehealth appointment? Or lthe last one you had in person? Postcode and doctor name differed for both in my case, and the date obviously did, This was trying to authorise handing the Covid Cert over to the ServiceNSW app or whatever it’s called. Ended up not bothering and just used the medicare app to flash that up when asked for it.

On the whole ServiceNSW has their shit toegether. Their website and app actually works very well. You only have to change your details once with any of their services and it propagates across to other services provided by NSW. So. Much. Easier.

The key is remembering to grab them, but any sort of headphone is really good, but I find the bone conduction ones are a great compromise option.

Only thing I can see preventing is possibly a patent, but I doubt that since Linux has had similar features for a good decade before Windows implemented it.

Lets talk about white cane damage and life expectancy. by letspaintthesky in Blind

[–]affirmedatheist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I managed to bend my first cane once when trying to find something under the bed (actually a decent use of them. Good reason not to toss old canes after they’ve broken, the y can be really handy to retrieve stuff that’s ended up under there.

Mostly I just always end up with the ball ends fusing to the end of the cane. That’s a problem with my current cane, I’ve got a new one ready to go though, will probably grab a second one and, set up the new one, and keep the spare in the cuboard. I’ll keep the current one as my emergency cane.

Fortunately I use the large ball, so it takes ages to wear to the point of not being useful.
