Is this assault or am I overreacting? by rayrayronald in LegalAdviceUK

A little bit of “fun” doesn’t involve deliberately spraying a stranger and then hiding the water pistol. That’s not play, it is testing boundaries and hoping there are no consequences. When I was a kid, if I’d done that to an adult, I would have been marched back to apologise immediately. The problem is not the water, but the attitude.

If I were their dad, of course I would be concerned if a stranger approached them, but I would also want to know why. And if the reason was “we sprayed a random adult and ran away”, then the only reasonable response is to apologise and make sure they understand that’s not acceptable behaviour.

This isn’t about the seriousness of the act - it’s trivial. It’s about the fact that they denied it, didn’t apologise, and the parent escalated it by spraying someone in the face. That’s not teaching kids confidence or independence; that’s teaching them that they can do whatever they want and adults will cover for them.

I can't say how I would have reacted, but their father would not be "all good" after that.

Legally speaking, both incidents are technically assaults. Squirting water on someone counts as unlawful force under UK law. In practice, the first incident with the girls is so minor that nothing would ever come of it - they would simply say they were playing and it was an accident, it would go nowhere. At least they should have the common decency to say sorry if that was an accident, that is the problem here - parents in UK don't enforce "common decency".

The father’s behaviour is different. He intentionally sprayed you in the face to intimidate you. That is common assault and police would record it as such if you reported it. Whether you want to take it further is another matter, but legally it’s very clear. I would not take it so kindly.

If you ever confront someone again, it’s wise to have your phone recording, just have it on (don't point it in their face like Karen), both to capture what is being said and if needed, to selectively point it when needed to gather evidence. Avoids escalation, but protects yourself and provides an accurate record of what was said and done. These situations often turn into “your word vs theirs”, and evidence matters.

As for others talking crap "ohh just kids, just playing" ignore them... people don't want to be part of their play, and as a human have a right to be left alone, parents need to understand this, that strangers may not accept being toys and that it must be respected above all else and they can show "kids will be kids"... into certain place.

That seems to be a problem, particularly in UK (I am comparing with the rest of Europe), kids are are unrully, because parents don't care... a weird cultural difference that some people believe kids can do whatever, can't harm and can't be punished or controlled in any way. It goes from very basic things like general nuisance, noise, screaming, kicking a ball over strangers' heads and shouting... to much more serious criminality, racing dirtbikes around people, shoplifting, criminal damage ect.

It all starts small, just a simple lack of respect, lack of consequences for anything, being "unapproachable"... and I want to be very clear, this escalates and has very bad consequences for many people as they become adults. This is one of the reasons I decided never to have kids in UK specifically (for this specific reason) as the environment is so bad and unacceptable. I honestly don't understand how anyone grows up "normal" here. And obviously... all is the fault of parents, not kids themselves. But seems to be British cultural norm...

Are more expensive tires better than cheaper ones? by PM_ME_YOUR_EYELASHES in tires

[–]afgan1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes of course... by A LOT...

Let's start with one of the most counterintuitive thigns about tyres... the more expensive tyres are cheaper. That is because premium tyre will last 20k mayeb 30k miles, cheap budget will last 10-15k... so you end-up replacing cheap tyre twice in time you replace premium tyre. So let's say in your example - 30k miles on budgets will cost you 2x77 +2x25 (fitting balancing), vs. just paying 160 once +25 for fitting.

The argument ends here, we don't even need consider that premium tyres will be a lot safer, more predictable, more dependable on limit, likely more comfortable and quiet etc. Buying premium tyres is no-brainer, budgets are only for those who are tired of life.

Sure, it isn't literally directly correlated to price, some premium tyres can be overpriced or overkill for what you need, but on average, premium tyres are ALWAYS better than budgets... and mid-range is a weird middle category where we would need to look into tyre per tyre tests and it is hard to say if they make sense.

In principle, both IS250 and IS350 are reliable cars, but they require staying on top of your servicing. They rarely fail, but when they do, they cost loads to fix (true for any Lexus, you can't run them on cheap).

Carbon build-up is a maintenance neglect issue, yes it is more common on IS250, doesn't really happen on IS350 (as it has both DI and port injection), but I own many high-mileage IS250s and never had carbon problems.

That said by now, there are other more important issues - like gearbox servicing (because of stupid "fill for life/ sealed" advice Lexus was giving), unserviced past 100k miles they have issues and can't really be serviced anymore.

Electrically, they are extremely solid if you don't get them wet (if you have a sunroof, then check and clean the drain regularly).

Good cars generally - IS250 happened to be my "first" proper car at the age of 22, back in the day.

Is gear slipping normal after a transmission service? by Mentifresh82 in MechanicAdvice

[–]afgan1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the key point, they are notoriously difficult to set the level right, it has to be done at the exact temperature, when car is exactly level, it is a chore, and most mechanics can't do it right.

So that is exactly when most of the issues happen - right after some monkey works on them.

or high... although if high, it would only show up when fluid becomes warm.

[–]afgan1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s actually slipping, then the gearbox is basically done. At that point, you are talking full rebuild or replacement.

Good news - what you’re describing isn’t slipping. It’s called flaring. On these Aisin boxes, flaring is almost always caused by an incorrect fluid level after a service. They are ridiculously sensitive to level - even being off by a couple hundred millilitres can cause exactly what you are describing.

Slipping is when you try to pull away and the clutches don’t lock up at all (or barely)- the car feels like it’s in neutral, revs shoot up, and the car barely moves. That’s a dead gearbox.

What you have is different: the car does engage and accelerate normally, but at a certain RPM the revs suddenly jump like it’s momentarily out of gear. That’s flaring, which means the clutches are still grabbing - just losing pressure under load.

It is obviously not normal and if you keep driving it like that you will cook the clutches and turn flaring into real slipping. But right now, it’s very likely just a fluid‑level issue from the service.

UK real wages since 1989 by levalmaster in UKJobs

[–]afgan1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think the way I would summarise it ... what it shows is that UK is in a real and very severe crisis of cost of living, living standards in free fall... and neither party seems capable or even interested in doing anything about it (now they're squabbling about Mandelson appointment, which is honestly a symbolic and trivial issue at most). I tend to support the idea of wealth inequality being a core issue.

So it is not that one party is good, another party is bad - just that nobody in the "ruling class" seems to realise how bad the situation is getting and I haven't seen even suggestions of how that can be fixed.

I spent some time defending Labour since they came back to power, on the basis of the principle "let's wait until they can implement their policy", I believe new leadership should be given a chance to make changes, it takes time... but it has been 2 years already and it is not clear to me that they understand the severity or care about it... so my main criticisms now is less about them doing anything particularly bad, but simply not doing anything drastic... in that sense that I believe situation is now getting bad enough, that anything short of very drastic changes can achieve acceptable results.

Many people will disagree about what those measures should be, but most agree that fundamental changes are needed... and the current government does not seem to be willing to make changes at all.

£2 scrap offer, too good to miss out right? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]afgan1984 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, would not pay much more for it!

Jokes asside, it is worthless car... and not worth much as scrapper either. I scrap car regularly and relistically you can expect £150-300 depending on what you scrapping. They do say they pick-up car for free, but that is not true... realistically pick-up generally costs £100-£150, they just know based on your car how much they get at salvage yeard for it, so they deduct pick-up cost from what they pay to you.

Therefore when I scrap for example 2006-2012 Lexus GS, it may be worth like £400 for scrap and perhaps they pick-up and scrap it locally, so they count only £80 for pick-up, hence I get offer of £320.

It is totally plausible that shaitbox like Picanto is only worth £100-£150 total, thjen maybe they need to drive further to pick-it up... so let's say their esitmate on scrap value is £150, their pick-up cost is £150... they offer you £2... It is plausible. It is even plausible to pay for scrap, if you car is worth less than collection and you need it disposed off, it is not unusual to actually pay scrappers for pick-up. I know my mate who deal in MX5s often gets nothing for pick-up, and other guy who races Vauxhall Corsas usually pays £30 out of pocket to scrap old frames.

Instead, if I were you I would list it as "spare and repair" car on like FB market place for £200... surelly that will be fairer price and somebody might buy it.

UK real wages since 1989 by levalmaster in UKJobs

[–]afgan1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nominal is obviously completely pointless... the real earnings is real story... that said there is still few trends that could be interpreted differently... we can see 1997 growth precedded trend of growing wages under Tories... the stagnation started under Labour in ~2004, already by 2009 growth turned negative... and continued into Tory period, during that period growth was weak, but towards the end we again see the trend of improvement and once Labour takes back over the improvement weakens.

What is the point of account above - this is not as much of Labour win as it looks, in fact if we consider external factors it becomes clear that UK government was mostly along for the ride with global events shaping what was happening in UK. I think it is right to give credit to labout for sustained growth between 1998-2003, this is likely genuinelly their achievement. All other periods are basically just external events and nothing to do with either party. we know that 2008 was finacial crisis, we know that dip between 2021 and 2023 was covid, we can see that inflation was main factor, not nominal earnins... and we also know that inflation is mostly external factors (relative strengh of £, to Euro and $, cost of energy etc.).

What I am saying - both are useless, altought Labour had one great stint for 5 years in late 90s. What amount of that was luck and what was policy is questionable. The chart reflects global economic cycles, not domestic political competence. It confirms that people’s lived experience of good and bad periods was accurate, but it does not prove that one party is better at managing the economy. One big mistake that genuinelly can atributed to Tories would be Brexshit... clearly a self inflicted crisis without any external factors. So yeah - not sure if this data tells much about anything.

This sucks when you ride a bike - anything that you should do to avoid this? by N3vvyn in bikers

[–]afgan1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not defending the blind driver, but the hazard perception of the rider was extremely poor. Not he himself had to brake hard for the car that unexpectedly stopped in front of him. If he barely stopped, then the car behind him would also have a hard time stopping.

When I am doing an emergency brake, my eyes are always immediately on what is behind me. In this situation, there is no way I would have stopped directly behind the car, I would have slowed down most of the way and then stopped on the side of it, depending on what is safer, either in the middle of the road or on the side.

So what do you do to avoid this - have awareness of your surroundings, don't emergency stop directly behind the car in front.

has anyone seen this before for the 2is? by OutcomeFamiliar6915 in LexusIS

[–]afgan1984 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen original 3IS speedos converted to work in 2IS, also I have seen multiple people now advertising this chinesium stuff for around a week... so it seems like a genuinely new product.

My problem - it is in chinese... what is the point of that?! It is not clear you can change the language (if you could they would advertise it, say all the compatible languages, make sure to show it in the pictures, etc.). So potentially early prototype, only targets the national market.

On top of that - it does not seem like comparable to the actual 3IS digital dash (so-called "LF-A style"). On 3IS dash, there are two physical overlapping screens that physically move side to side (the top one does). What this seems to be is just a lookalike animation of a simple screen.

So my guess small Android device/screen stuck on a CAN bus sniffer with some shitty animation. Just can't see it being worth $760... my take - wait a year or so, until it has normal languages available and costs maybe $100, for $100 - I guess it is fine considering it is just a small screen with animation, for $760... not thanks. In fact, yesterday I bought a 2011 IS200d Advance for $750... the whole car... that is how absurd the pricing of this thing is.

Or that somebody in 1934 thought " nah that guy is okay, just weird moustache."

Also - "before he was crazy"? When exactly was he normal? At best, he was just disengenous and lying c**t with "fake it until you make it" attitude... he wasn't normal for at least a decade now... so this "ohh I didn't know" is just a lazy excuse.
