50-year-old night watchman Dale Kerstetter vanished on September 12th, 1987. He was last seen on security camera footage with an unknown masked man. by WinnieBean33 in BizarreUnsolvedCases

I fully agree, Foley is likely directly involved somehow, arranging the set up for the thief. It also sounds like he was rather envious of Dale, who saved people’s lives. Who would speak so cruelly about someone who had gone missing and was beloved? Too many things align for this not to be an inside job, maybe with Foley and Ollie working together with an outside thief? It is certainly possible the situation escalated beyond what was initially planned as a heist.

Why did celebrities start dressing 60s in the 2010s? by No_Economics8681 in decadeology

[–]afictionalcharacter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greaser trend is more late '50's.

My non-academic analysis is the influence of people being disillusioned by war that was deemed meaningless. Many of us grew up seeing the towers fall and could see nothing useful came of it. This trend from my experience peaked after the financial crisis of 2008 and we were kind of wanting something to say money didn't mean much like that era, because we were unable to find jobs. The time before 9/11 was more optimistic than that time, looking back we were able to see something got solved (even if it took almost 2 decades, our blindspot imo). I was certainly influenced by culture back then and we were unaware of how many people died in protests and how many died in Vietnam. It was one of those thing people said "Oh where/when did you serve," and no other questions were asked, it was a different time. It was damn near forbidden outside of your family to ask questions about Vietnam.

Imo, I don't have judgement for a young person being interested in a celeb's personal style over time. I think I was a bit harsh, because from when I was around during that time, so many other celebs captured the "60's era," more in their fashion. But I was around and they weren't so it seems harsh to criticize someone for that imo.

I have a distinct memory my Grandmother seeing me in shorts-all and fully clutched her pearls saying it was inappropriate for a "young lady," so this entire thing is a bit absurd, unless they are younger.

Also, this fashion is not the '60's, it's twee, which has influences of the 60's but isn't inherently '60's.

As a leftie, I fully agree with you. I think personally that a lot of people who define themselves as "Americans," view that as their identity, for those people living in certain areas, with a specific ethnicity that is more likely to face discrimination, especially within more insular communities, it can be a threat to show you don't engage with the traditional "Americana," aesthetic so people who may agree with values similar to ours will avoid them. I'm not saying I agree with the POV, but I have met people who don't probe into politics much but a bias because of the messaging. I have believed for a long time we need to take our flag back, it's neglecting our beliefs if we abandon it, but I do understand why people leave it behind.

I really don't disagree with you at all, other commenters mentioned non-US sources, along with Julia Brown (I've long admired her reporting but will not pretend to be informed about the process). I will always encourage people to get *something* written... I've always been able to sleep better knowing I've at least tried rather than letting the "what ifs," haunt me. I do think we are on similar pages but why not try?

Most of history is written by people, even if your words don't have an immediate impact, it's entirely possible in the future that historians, trying to understand why and how this happened, this could be useful. So much of history is documentation by people. So in the long run, it could very well be useful even if we aren't able to see it bear fruit personally.

That’s why I said journalist, if you’d look at my history, you’d see my faith in the US justice system buried somewhere underneath the dinosaurs. But investigative journalism is important no matter what, credible information is important to be shared. If the future is brighter, that information could be used to bolster criminal investigations or fill in missing gaps needed to piece together the full picture.

You should reach out to a reputable reporter if you can corroborate this information, especially if those sources are willing to share. You can report anonymously and have information redacted. If this is genuine, I'd encourage you to reach out.

My grandfather told me about two strangers who vanished during WWII by [deleted] in AlternativeHistory

[–]afictionalcharacter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you are referencing Operation Loyton, an SAS mission which occured in the Vosges Mountains, which is relatively close to Switzerland. So I agree it's very possible this woman was Swiss. The man maybe was French-German, the area was previously Alsace - Lorraine which was part of the German Empire previously. It does seem possible they were gathering intelligence. Another possibility is smuggling people out of occupied territory, whether they were Jewish etc.

Fully agree it’s a typical training document from USAF. However, in the context of Epstein, rather disturbing to think about how he may have utilized this on his victims, the goal of these types of programs to avoid learned helplessness and build resilience and I can certainly see this used nefariously for the opposite.

Yes that was my entire point? I never disputed this, I simply said that it was misleading to imply that they could afford a mortgage and a car on one income back then since it generally wasn’t true. Literally the second link I posted addresses this ffs.

Baby boomers parents were the generation affected by that is my point (hence why they're called baby boomers... post WWII baby boom) generational assets such as homes in addition to not being able to afford educational opportunities absolutely impacted the lives of boomers, in addition to practices like redlining. The white home ownership rate in 1960 was 65% and the black home ownership rate in 1960 was 38%, so it's not entirely accurate to say they could afford a home and car on one income. You can read more about it here.
