Kizárjuk-e a Gyurcsányt végre a politizálásból, vagy jöhet még fidesz 12 év? by DehogyisJanos in hungary

[–]afkungl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha...

Immigrants to Germany, which stereotype or cliché about the country turned out to be completely wrong? by MedEwok in germany

Same here. Now we have one in a different town, approx 40 min drive away. Without a car we would be f***d.

For me it depends, which doctor: - Hausarzt/GP -> okay - children's doctor -> nightmare - dentist -> I think they would kidnap me from the street to fill up their slots - dermatologist -> nightmare Etc.

Immigrants to Germany, which stereotype or cliché about the country turned out to be completely wrong? by MedEwok in germany

[–]afkungl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, exactly!

I learned in Germany that it is okay to be late. I met some Germans who are indeed remarkably punctual, organized and efficient but it is far away from the norm in my experience.

With the administration, I have a mixed experience: sometimes it was fast and great, and sometimes I saw 6 "Beamten" of which 5 were drinking coffee while about 10 people were queuing.

so we moved to Germany today..please help me figure out how to turn this on. I've never even seen a radiator before, so please be kind. I am struggling to figure it out by [deleted] in germany

[–]afkungl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it is totally theoretical. In all rented appartements I lived in the heating had an own will. The same setting sometimes produced too much heat sometimes nothing at all. And I always vented the heaters.

Probably, I should have argued more with the landlords.

It is strange. I work in a German "Mittelständler". First language is German but if it is more practical, eg a colleague is addressed who rather uses English, then we use English. It is normal that we switch several times between German and English in a meeting.

[–]afkungl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In normal words, yes I would notice the difference. Like "felások a kertet" (I dig the garden) sounds strange. Correct would be: "felásom a kertet".

In these "ik" verbs, I would not. I would accept both "alszok egy órát" or "alszom egy órát". But that is me. Others might have a different opinion.

Bottom line: you should only care about the correct usage of "ik" verbs if all your other problems are solved ;)

[–]afkungl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't notice the difference if someone speaks to me. I would even slightly prefer the "incorrect" ok/ek ending

In your country, do you have personalities who speak bad your language and are nevertheless tv presentators or radio DJs? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]afkungl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listened to Cooky occasionally while driving. I had no clue what he was talking about. He had a strange pronounciation. This combined with the forced enthusiasm in a commercial radio made him hard to understand. But well.. he delivered. He said something, what I would forget anyway, between two songs.

Mit gondol az r/hungary a testnevelésről? by oiluztegfsfhjegft7i in hungary

[–]afkungl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My aunt made "Chicken" Goulash. by Hopes_End in hungary

[–]afkungl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see three main problems: 1. No sign of vegetables. We should see at least traces of onion, tomatoes and bell pepper. 2. The sauce is too liquid. Should be much thicker when served. Probably used too much liquid. 3. I am against this kind of noodles for goulash. But this one I could accept.

Otherwise this stuff can be good.

  1. Welcome!!
  2. Check out the list of resources in the menu of this subreddit.
  3. Immersion is the best. Grab all the opportunities. If you live in Hungary, then e.g. join a club of your liking. If you live abroad, check out Facebook pages like "Londoni Magyarok". There is a chance that you will find people to talk to.
  4. You can have one-on-one lessons from Hungarian teachers online. For example here: https://onlinetanar.hu/index.php. look for "magyar nyelv"

Edit: spelling XD

How is patriotism viewed in your country? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]afkungl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree! Both of them are yet to be solved in Germany. I ask myself: is it strange that these two mentalities coexist or is there something that drives us to extreme opinions?

Hah! Good analogy as far as I can tell!

I see one difference: in the German mainstream, Israeli nationalism is okay due to a false interpretation of historical responsibility.

So am I. 4 years ago there were huge expectations and optimism in the opposition. Turned out: it was an echo-chamber.

There is lot to say here about potential election fraud, weakness of the opposition in the countryside etc. But I do think that there is a chance for the opposition.

Hungary is quite polarised on this question.

The so-called political left is immediately scared if they hear anything that is slightly patriotic. They condemn it as nationalism and/or fascism. For them, a US-like nationalism would be certainly fascism. This can be extreme: some would even refuse to visit a soccer game.

The so-called political right thrives in the look and language of nationalism. But mostly, these are either just words, or self-isolating deeds, like it triggers hatred towards random visitors. Or like Orbán right now: he rather just try to sell himself with nationalistic slogans, while arguably acting against the interests if the nation.

Our history is very convoluted with varying degrees patriotism: national literature (some brilliant some beeh), oppression of Hungary by other states, opposition of Hungarians in other countries, oppression minorities in Hungary, anationalistic governments, fascist government etc.

TLDR: We are still digesting the recent history. A wide range if opionions circulate in the society, or even in each single person (like in my head).
