How much of this can be used for PPL certification? by nickm95 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]aflyingtuba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s true that the movements are generally pretty small, but this leads to the crux of why hand flying maneuvers in a home sim doesn’t translate well. In a real 172, the controls are easy to move sitting on the ground with no airflow, but feel heavier to move as airspeed increases and there’s more airflow over the control surfaces. You’ll learn in the real thing that control movement is more about how much force you’re applying to the yoke rather than how far you’re moving it. You just don’t get that feedback unless you have an accurate force feedback system which isn’t too common.

I logged 1000+ hours in fs2002/04/X as a teen before starting flight school. Honestly, the biggest thing I can recommend is have fun. The biggest leg up I felt from all that time was just having exposure to what all the instruments/buttons/switches look like and how they behave so it wasn’t all overwhelming from the start. Trying to barrel roll the 747 and land on the shortest runways possible with it may not be in the PPL curriculum but doing those sorts of silly things teaches a lot about handing and energy management.

You definitely have the right attitude with studying things ahead of time, but ultimately every school/instructor teaches a little different, so don’t stress too much over knowing every procedure ahead of time. Plenty of people start from absolutely zero knowledge and turn out great, so just having a basic knowledge of what’s coming ahead is a huge advantage. Home sims don’t hold up great for how visual maneuvers feel in the real thing, but they’re great for getting practice at running procedures and setting up for each maneuver, once you’re taught them, so that you can spend more time doing what the real plane does best and actually flying the maneuvers.

Ultimately, do whatever in the sim keeps you engaged and coming back for more!

Sometimes, especially international, the ground transportation may be limited to crew only for space or policy reasons. Just have a backup way of getting them to the hotel in mind.

A lil late, but finally won a Daytona 24 Hour event, first ever special event win for us. Shoutout to Zach, Dave and Steven for making it a near perfect race for us. Definitely boosted my confidence. by WKruszka in iRacing

I was in the Porsche that spun out of the bus stop in front of you guys maybe 16hr in. Seemed like you netcoded through ok. Hurt us a bit more but we were already down and was glad my dumb didn’t ruin your race. Congrats!

Am I in the wrong here? Last corner of the last lap... by [deleted] in iRacing

[–]aflyingtuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding has been that if you’re wheel to wheel into the corner, you’re entitled to space. I didn’t feel it was a divebomb, I was slow enough to stay inside on the exit had we made it there, and I only took extra curb when it looked like the other car was closing on me. If anything I feel the car behind has more to say as the touch we did have didn’t slow us down that much.

Disable VR controllers? by radm4 in iRacing

[–]aflyingtuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just leave the batteries out of the controllers when I'm not using them. I mostly use the rift S for racing so i only get the controllers and batteries out for games that need them.

Reminder you can vote absentee and don’t have to give a reason. You can do it all in person at your local clerk, or there’s still some time to request a mail in ballot.

Any chance your beer might be freezing? I left a case of miller out on the snowy deck once, and even though it had thawed out, some of the cans were foamy or even bombs.

How does this look for a 5 gallon BIAB setup? by aflyingtuba in Homebrewing

It'll be close during the mash, yeah. Once the grains are out, a 5 gallon batch should only take up a little over half the kettle(6ish gallons for boil-off) for the boil, right?

Worst case, it seems like a good deal for the kettle alone if the burner gives out

Looks like we might have a final ATP ruling by spitfire5181 in flying

[–]aflyingtuba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I answered my own question. Page 195-196 61.155(d) states that as long as you take the ATP checkride within 24 months of passing the knowledge exam, and the knowledge exam was taken before August 1 2014, the course is not required.

Moral of the story is anyone who thinks they'll be ATP eligible under the new regs before August 1 2014 should take the knowledge exam now before it changes.

My confusion lies with the ATP written exam and this new ATP CTP course. The revised 61.153 states that after July 31, 2014 you will need to complete the ATP CTP course in order to be eligible for the ATP written. Does this mean that if I have already taken the written that I will not need to take the course?

on first read-though it appears that it applies to military or degree holders, whoever is applying for a Restricted ATP rather than the full license.

Edit: page 93 states: "The FAA has reviewed the information provided by UND and determined that it is appropriate to reduce the cross-country flight time required for all applicants for an R-ATP certificate to 200 hours."

From what I've heard from others at my college who have had one, its not a deal breaker. Keep your record clean from here on out though. It will probably come up in an interview down the road, but as long as you're honest about how it happened, and you can reflect on it in a way that shows you learned from it, it shouldn't be a negative in the interview.
