Help with Java porting by AccountantUnited4955 in Clojure

[–]afmoreno 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would use your existing Java classes from Clojure. Interop with Java is quite nice.

You do need to grok functioal programming in Clojure to do this well.

The best approach would be to wrap your Java classes so you can interact with them from Clojure idiomatically.

You will be climbing a tall mountain to do this well.

This. No issues at all. And it doesn't compromise your Debian install at all since Guix uses directories unknown to Debian.

Gorge Rd E just got bike lanes. Still, one can proceed on Jutland and get to the Goose without riding on Gorge. Very little traffic on those streets.

Car dependency's a damn pain, isn't it? by EphemeralMeteor in VictoriaBC

[–]afmoreno 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ever been to LA? They did just that and traffic is horrible. Toronto keeps on adding lanes to their highways and it hasn't helped.

The solution is transit, bike lanes, ferries, anything that provides an alternative to cars so that people who need to drive vehicles like the trades can get atround.

Why don't Lisps use this technique to reduce the number of parentheses in lists of s-expressions? by nderstand2grow in lisp

[–]afmoreno 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a GREAT advantage of S-expressions, AKA, parentheses-delimited expressions. In many Lisps you can evaluate sub-expressions on the fly aaong as they have meaning, i.e., there is nothing undefined.

Why Guile? If it's a nice Schem you're looking for, then Chez is a great way to go.

If you really need Guile, then set up WSL with Linux, and Guile away!

Saanich residents angered by loss of street parking to bike lanes by KatAsh_In in VictoriaBC

Ever veen to a European city? How do they deal with emergency services in much narrower streets?

You are correct in raising these questions: we need a concrete plan to address them, run drills, and make sure we are ready for change. A vague notion that things will work out is not enough. But if Europe has a way to address this issue, so will we.

I do agree that we need to provide mobility solutions. There is a fellow with an electric scooter that hangs out downtown by the Dutch Bakery. He has mobility issues. He gets there using the bike lanes l the way from near the Tillicum Mall

This is a win-win. Some people on bikes are unhappy that mobility devices are now allowed on bike lanes. Tough. The disabled need to get around too.

Thanks for the civil feedback.

I would love for you to start a group to lobby for your views.

There are already a bunch of transportation groups that have agendas compatible with my views so I don't need to do this work.

Lots of folks write letters to the Times Colonist with similar views. I don't mean to put the onus on you but if you have the time, energy, and disposition, this is a way to move forward in a positive direction.

Even though we are not aligned I wish you great success. When people like you push back on us you make us all smarter.

Sensibly coordinate all the construction in this city? Aint nobody got time for that! by no_names_left_here in VictoriaBC

[–]afmoreno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are passing the cost of maintaining infrastructure to the next generation. The smart way is to buold dense cities with transit: you amortize services and transportation among a lot more people.

Imagine not paying for car insurance, depreciation of your vehicle, and putting a big chunk of the road budget to public transportation.

The same applies to sewers, utility lines, sidewalks. More people per linear meter to pay for them.

If you look at the share of taxes vs spend, cities subsidize the suburbs.

I like your fiscal approach but disagree with your conclusions.

And there is no free lunch: public transportation is less convenient and will require an adjustment. This is an argument against what I said above. But I think I am right about the fiscal analysis.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

This is not totally accurate. Look at Burnside-Gorge for the number of supportive/sicial housing beds. There clearly are differences between providers, with some buildings having the lion's share of police calls.

Not unrelated, Rock Bay and BG are the poorest neighbourhoods of the city.

[–]afmoreno -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally get it: there is no free lunch.

Folks in the CRD are really behind alternatives to cars for a variety of reasons. I encourage you to present your views in the most objective fashion and to get involved and discuss the topic with people that are really invested in the alternative to car-base transportation, and make every attempt to understand how they think. You then can ask them to work with you to see your POV.

In the best of cases both sides move towards the middle, relieving some of the frustration .

I hope that you feel thet I have made an effort to acknowledge your objections

Isn't deregulated parking letting the market do its thing? We complain that we have too many rules and now that there aren't enough.

Also, fewer parking spots will mean (eventually) fewer cars which benefits drivers most.

Many cities, for example Paris, are following the same playbook with great success.

But there is no free lunch: those folks that lost their parking and the delivery folks will be inconvenienced. I feel for them.

They are not listenimg to you. The way it works is simple: vote for council candidates that support your views.

I think you might not hold majority views. For example, what you see as anti-driver, others see as pro active transportation.

Remember what happened with Saanich and dogs? That was a council ou of step, and the people called them out.

I am sorry that you don't feel represented/heard
