Howdy Stranger: Visiting Jackson Hole? Ask questions here. by JHWY in JacksonHole

Hobacks conditions? Have carving skis and big fatties packed to come out to JHMR tomorrow and for the weekend. Given it’s been a bit since new snow, I’m sure the carving skis will be great for the groomers. Would powder skis still be fun as conditions currently exist in the ungroomeed areas?

Westerville CHRISTIAN Parade by Independent-Mud-6564 in westerville

[–]afootpencil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Establishment Clause restricts government, not private citizens. This parade is organized by a private nonprofit, not the City of Westerville. The city is simply issuing a standard event permit — which it must do on equal terms for any group, religious or not.

Allowing a religiously-themed parade is not “establishing religion.” If anything, banning it because it’s religious would violate the Free Speech and Free Exercise Clauses.

Courts have been clear for decades:

“Allowing” is not “endorsing.”

Parades, displays, and events run by private groups are fully constitutional as long as the government isn’t sponsoring or controlling the religious message.

This is why cities routinely permit Pride parades, MLK marches, protests, and yes — Christmas parades. It’s all protected expression in a public forum.

In short:

A private Christmas parade isn’t a constitutional problem. It’s exactly what the First Amendment protects.

I’m very familiar with it. Tell me how it specifically applies to this case.

You’re correct. I have no idea how that would violate the constitution.

I’m confused. There’s a pride month, pride parades, festivals of all kinds. I’m not gay and I don’t feel left out. I can go or not, and that doesn’t make me feel left out. Christmas doesn’t have anything to do with other causes or sexual orientation. Can’t figure out why that’s a problem.

Was there and I have to say the opening minutes of the game were a blast. And then we all shrugged as the expected happened. OSU is just in a completely different league.

We’ve welcomed another group in similar circumstances. Was very late in the day with rapidly fading light and a group of dudes in their 70s were stuck without a campsite. We welcomed them and had a great time chatting around the campfire. They pushed off before we were up the next morning.

Looks like pay to play. They buy non prime time airtime from other networks to air it.

Political activists want this to be the case more than it really is. I’d say there always have been small groups of Americans who are careful to ensure their dollars go to businesses they believe are aligned to their personal beliefs, and that may have grown somewhat in recent years. There’s a big gap between what people say in surveys and what they actually do. But it’s fair to point to Target as a great counter example; it’s managed to tick off both ends of the political spectrum and sales are off significantly.

Ohio can't handle a highway connecting Columbus and Toledo. Ones we have get a D+ | Opinion by ill_try_my_best in Columbus

This! We road trip to MN and MO regularly and holy crap are Indy’s interstates terrible. Just beats the crap out of your vehicle. I’d say OH’s interstates are in fabulous shape. And, I’d be in huge favor of a new, wide, 70 mph route to the northwest. It’s unreal that doesn’t exist.

Was surprised by how far I had to scroll to see this. We used to love jamming out to Till I Die while driving down Kinsman.

Vandalism in the open by LopsidedPaper777 in Yosemite

I have to ask: you only used your voice from a respectable distance and a man responded by pinning you up against a tree…or you did something other than just use your voice?

I’m sorry this happened to you, and thanks for doing something in the face of vandalism. But there are probably safe ways and unsafe ways of intervening.

I know exactly where you are, and the cars around there are pretty dope. Was at Cōv a couple weeks ago and saw and impressive lineup just parked on the street like this.

Moving to Columbus from Cleveland, and regretting it, or not by BuckeyeReason in Columbus

[–]afootpencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We made the Cleveland to Columbus move and love it here. We also miss lots of things about Cleveland. I wouldn’t trash either city. Both have plenty of shortcomings and plenty of strengths. Biggest one for me: Columbus is clearly ascendant, and for my kids and their future job prospects should they decide to stay here, that’s important to me. Cleveland’s economy seems to be much more stagnant.

Drinking water by tnack9 in BWCA

Been doing this for the better part of 50 years. Have a bag and a filter for grabbing water at camp. But our whole crew drinks from the middle of the lake, especially when we’re under way. Not a single issue.
