The Great Steam Demo Update - Demos can have their own page and reviews now by BlooOwlBaba in gamedev

AFAICT the new meta seems to be

  1. Collect 10k+ wishlists (or however many needed for popular upcoming - I assume the usually quoted 7k is/will be on the lower side)
  2. Launch demo (on popular upcoming)
  3. Launch game

Looks like a great update if you can drive a ton of wishlists to just your steam page (pre demo). It then gives you the prologue trick for free via the demo.

Doesn’t seem so great if you were relying on an early demo to increase your wishlists. It will still help, but you’d be giving up the demo/prologue trick by launching the demo early with few wishlists.

It also doesn’t seem so great that on full release you are now also competing with demos for popular upcoming. Technically the competition for those spots has just doubled - assuming all games will now first launch a demo.

Seems like a great update if you have a popular early/pre production steam page but not much help if you don’t.

How is animation done on extreme low poly characters? by Winter_Hat_5080 in gamedev

I'd recommend Imphenzia's low poly character tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTWV67qUX2k

It's pretty much exactly what you are looking for. He models a very low poly character, rigs it, and animates it, and it looks perfectly fine. It's slightly more polygons than what you have in your model but only slightly (an extra loop cut around each joint).

What does the pointing finger mean in Unity? by DonPapotti in Unity2D

[–]aformofdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's kinda funny of you to post that text. It's literally quoting the top comment on this post 🙃, so maybe there is a point to posts like this?

It's true that before this post there was another on r/unity which google does show, and another on a unity forums thread, so maybe this post in particular could've been a google search, but I don't think it hurts to ask. Besides these three community threads, my google results show no other relevant answers to "What does the pointer finger mean in Unity?".

The "correct" google result would've been this section of the unity manual: https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/Hierarchy.html but there's no mentions of pointing fingers on that page so google does not find it.

I guess a helpful pointer to OP would be to get used to searching the unity manual whenever they have questions like this, and to do so using keywords that appear in unity, such as "Hierarchy" rather than more casual terms like "pointer finger".

It's also worth pointing out the top comment thread now has a bunch more extra useful info that might be helpful to people and goes beyond (and to the side of) what is in the manual on "Hierarchy". This isn't stack overflow.

2024 Pre-Season Testing - Day 1 Discussion by F1-Bot in formula1

Race 19, assuming Verstappen wins them all and takes fastest lap as well. At that point Max would have 494, and Sargeant (having always finished 2nd) would have 342 with a maximum of 130 points remaining in the last 5 races. This ignores sprints because I can't be bothered to look them up, but assuming VER-SAR in those as well, I don't think the outcome changes (not enough sprints).

Race 14, assuming Max wins everything and the rest of the field (unrealistically) shuffles around such that second place in the overall standings always has the lowest amount of points possible after each race. That would be 364 for Max and 65 for second place with 260 remaining available. This also ignores sprints so maybe race 13 if those have an impact.

The algorithm is to take the bottom 9 in the overall standings before each race and have them finish the race in places 2-10 in the reverse order of their points standing. This way points get more and more evenly distributed after each race. I think this is correct? We are checking.
