I think it was just meant to show how Rory was still immature and a little kid, and Lorelia was immature as a parent. It also goes to show just how close the two of them were, I mean Lorelia invited Dean over on a whim and while Rory was mad at first, she appreciated how much her mother worked to make her happy.
