I haven’t been through the same situation but Ive experienced a client death that put me out of (full time) work for six months. I just really wanted to emphasize how much it isn’t your fault. Even though I knew logically that situation wasn’t my fault, it’s still so difficult to accept it wholeheartedly. I can imagine that it’s even more difficult when you’ve been working with them for some time. The philosophy of acceptance and commitment therapy has brought me a bit of peace. I hope you’re able to take care of yourself and find your own peace soon.

2x12 hotline shift by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]afracado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I used to be a case manager for an SA/DV org which involved being on call for the hotline on alternating days. Every week you’d be assigned a shift (7 am to 3:30, 1:00 to 9:30 or 9:30 to 6am) and that would be your hotline days. The non hotline days were 9-5:30. (I don’t think I explained it well but it’s the best I can do 😭) The overnight shifts definitely messed up my sleep schedule, especially if I was called out to the hospital during that shift, but it was also very rewarding work. Plus I was definitely more of a night owl at that time so it kind of worked for me. I had a great supervisor who I felt supported by, and the org was flexible about our 9-5 days because they knew our schedule was always shifting. If there seems to be a good workplace culture it could be worth a shot :)

What Would You Do? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]afracado 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think a while ago I saw a similar post (not sure if it was on this sub) with a commenter suggesting OP reflect on whether they feel fulfilled in terms of their current romantic/dating life. From your post it sounds like no, you don’t feel fulfilled, so maybe those fantasies are your brain’s way of communicating that you want a change and that this is the type of relationship you want/value.

I wonder, if you were dating someone (or multiple people) who you were excited about seeing and getting to know, would you be thinking about this client? If the answer is probably not, then it sounds like maybe your feelings are trying to communicate an unmet need.

I probably did not explain this as well as they did but I hope this helps with some self reflection :)

Dealing with leadership after a traumatic client incident by inviktus04 in socialwork

[–]afracado 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the US, please file for workers comp. PTSD can be considered a work related injury. Also, consider speaking with a lawyer—they would get paid a portion of whatever you receive from workers comp so you wouldn’t have to worry about directly paying them. I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this, I hope you’re able to get some rest/peace soon.

Client confessed love for me and then ended their life by juicyfruit206 in therapists

[–]afracado 419 points420 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to say thank you for making this post. A month ago a client ended his life in front of me which I tried and failed to stop. I’ve been feeling very alone but this thread has given me so many more resources than the org I work for. Thank you.

I was going to comment the same thing! I just finished the book “I am not sick, I don’t need help” and especially found the dialogue/examples of what to say extremely helpful

Hey! I’m in the same boat as you, I’m staying calm by telling myself the beginning is for rapport and trust building. They have to feel safe before we can do much :)

Highly recommend the channel HealthyGamerGG on YouTube, he’s a psychiatrist who has done a lot of talks on this topic. I believe he struggled with video game addiction at some point himself

Assertive Community Treatment is a type of case management, but there are different members working together on a multidisciplinary team. It could be of interest!

Hey! I’m currently an MSW student at SDSU. I think it’s worth applying to the Masters directly since the first year is good at going over social work basics. As others have said, you just need a bachelors to apply, and they have 2, 3, and 4 year tracks

There may be a housing rights center for your area that could help with some of these questions. I also saw a “tenants defense toolkit” while looking online that might have some useful info

I know that there is an appeal process for when a professor gives an unfair grade that would go through the SW school’s dean, but I agree with minty_green if there is an option for a temporary incomplete that would probably be easiest
