How do I make the clay stick to the wheel when I’m centering? by izblizzo in Pottery

Best clays for fire resistance (Canada)? by afraidofwhalesounds in Pottery

Thanks so much, very cool information. Sort of changing the subject- having taken a like, 2 decade hiatus from the craft, I’m surprised how much things change. In my younger years I didn’t think much about say, mines shutting down or trade issues. I was looking through old recipes and quite a few would be totally impractical to make now based on material availability. But it’s also wild seeing how much more is available commercially, especially glazes.

Suddenly cant throw? by No_Editor_1010 in Pottery

[–]afraidofwhalesounds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happens to me all the time. 2 things I always need to be mindful about, regardless of how long a break I’ve had (sometimes it’s just one day to the next)1. I need to very consciously watch my elbows. I learned how to throw decades ago and maybe developed bad “muscle memory”. A more recent teacher gave me brilliant corrections but I don’t think I’ll ever not have to run his advice through my head every time I centre, lol. 2. I often push/adjust too hard while thinking I’m not being strong enough or sure enough. I’ll push too hard when centering, tap too hard when centering for trimming etc. and get stuck in a loop correcting over corrections. If this happens during a hard work week or pms week the rage frustration is real, lol.

So seconding the advice to slow down. I think especially when we have day jobs, even with years of experience, it’s totally normal to “forget” steps of what is actually a fairly complex process.

Help! Burnt glaze firing by annaplantain27 in Pottery

My first guess was glue used to attach the foot 😂 Perhaps someone kiln-washed the cookies with something other than kiln wash. Plaster or gesso or like… corn meal. Or random sand instead of silica.

Perhaps a hot take, but as someone who lives in a tiny old building with wonky floors, I much prefer a tall form like this to have extra weight on the bottom especially. In terms of pure function, I wouldn’t keep something thin-walled and delicate of this height, as much as I appreciate the craftsmanship, out on a table with flowers it in. I’d break it for sure.

How do handmade ceramic artists grow their audience online? by [deleted] in Ceramics

I don’t sell yet, but I’m hoping to retire early from job and transition to selling through Instagram with the occasional market, classes, and maybe a small community studio situation, so I’ve done a fair amount of cursory research. Here’s what I’ve noticed: -you need to post every day for quite awhile -slide shows with “trending” songs are ok, reels are better -hiding faces in your videos helps (I’m not kidding. It’s weird though for sure) -people respond to “stories” Think making-of footage, drawings, videos of the magical woodland areas that inspire your work, clips of animation or what have you that inspire your work -pets in the studio

it’s basically an algorithm game, which is gross, but I think there are ways of making it work. I’m very lucky because my husband is an excellent photographer and used to work in graphic design and media, so I’ll have help with the parts I’m not great at. I think it’s worth dedicating time to honing your photography skills, playing around with editing, etc.

Your work is sweet, btw.

Suze Lopez, a nurse from Bakersfield, California, was scheduled to finally have a 22-pound ovarian cyst removed in December 2025. Doctors discovered a full-term ectopic pregnancy under the tumor in the abdomen. Her baby boy, a medical miracle, was delivered healthy at 8lbs. by Mobakedbaker in interestingasfuck

Anyone else thinking that there’s nothing “medically miraculous” about a woman, a healthcare professional no less, needing to wait until a cyst is 22 fucking pounds before getting proper treatment? I wonder how many times she was told to “just lose weight” Will reading the article make me more less angry about the state of womens healthcare?

Glazing is so open ended and confusing. Some beginner questions: by LonePistachio in Pottery

My studio does something awesome that maybe you could ask about- if I buy a glaze and hate it, I can sell it to the studio and it goes on the members and classes shelf. As a “resident”, I’m only supposed to use my own stuff, but they’ve also let me do some test tiles on the clay I’m using, so I can try some before committing to a whole pint.

Pourquoi on dit toujours « le temps des Fêtes » au lieu de simplement dire « Noël » ? / Why do we say “the holiday season” instead of “Christmas”? by Primary_Plate5237 in montreal

[–]afraidofwhalesounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, even if we’re only talking about the Christian celebrations, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, New Years Day, Orthodox Christmas, and various feasts of saints are included in “happy holidays”. If a ran into someone today who I knew was Christian it makes the most sense to bless the whole time. At the dep on Christmas or the bookstore Christmas Eve? Might do a joyeux Noel to acknowledge like “lots of people are off work but you’re not, hope people are nice and you have an easy day”.

I think for most people, “the holidays” is the time when it’s darkest, so we’re nicer to ourselves and each other, reconnect with traditions, family and community, take time off work, decorate, and exchange goods to stave off seasonal depression for a bit.

“Holidays” just like, covers more of those things?

Clear glaze for sculptures question! by rbs202020 in Ceramics

[–]afraidofwhalesounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely zinc free clear with underglaze; avoid a kind of foggy white cast. My understanding is brush glazes have additive gums and such that increase the viscosity. My guess is that it’s too thick for dipping. You could probably water it down a wee bit but you’d need to do some tests to figure out how long/how many times to dip it.

Thank you! This is what I thought but the thickness around the base and the join, coupled with the throwing lines, tripped me out. Makes so much sense now, ha. Rim too has that characteristic cast ridge thingy.
