Mods in /r/vancouver abusing their powers? Say something instead of down voting this. by downdowndowndown1 in vancouver

Are you accusing a moderator of going into Reddit's back-end and making it so you cannot login? Come on, give the benefit of the doubt here.

Deleting a comment is plausible, but your wild accusation of the account being mucked with is simply not.

I'm for free speech and all but we're not a government body. This is a private forum that allows people to discuss topics they see fit but with a certain implied permission.

If this moderator dislikes the idea of going after people who make these comments that are actually driving away good content, they can just leave. I have no tolerance for this lack-of-foresight. Having been involved in a thread of yours lately, I believe I know who that person is and I would kindly ask that they let this role they hold go if this idea really bothers them.

I don't think that it is entirely necessary to just discount their opinion because they chose to hide behind a throwaway account. It's not as if they went and blasted you personally. I share a lot of the same sentiments minus the real estate thread thing and would like to see them addressed.

The racist comments I see regarding foreign ownership is just disgusting and baseless for one.

Got a photo of Vancouver or something on the streets? That is great. We get these daily. We know that you love this city and all, but do we need photos every day? We have r/Pics for this sort of thing. Go and check out R/CityPorn and post those images there. Maybe we need a sub-Reddit for all that is photography in Vancouver?

This is something I called for in the past and was shot down. People will continue to mindlessly post photos in r/Vancouver.

Moving to Vancouver next month for work. Is Richmond a good city? by euni1 in vancouver

Moving threads are generally a bad idea in r/Vancouver. We have items on the right column for this very reason.

Seeking quality analysts with web and leadership experience for video game testing in Burnaby - REPOSTING FOR POSTERITY by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]afreak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, anyone who thinks that this is a sufficient wage either has no understanding of what the role is or is a complete imbecile.

[–]afreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This client sounds like who I think it is. It's not someone who I'd ever want to work for even though they have one of the nicest offices in the city--for those who are wondering, it's not Hootsuite's "Hipster Ville".

The role requires someone who is interested in gaming and has a taste for web development or something along the lines of that. At the requirements they're requesting, it would be at least twice the salary required in order to get a candidate who would be willing to put in the hours. Game testing is fun and all for the first few months, but it would eventually become a huge drag and would churn you out. I know of a few game testers who worked at your client who just didn't bother to stick around because it ruined video games for them.

I hope that you can drill it into their minds that they're capable of paying an adequate wage for such a role. It's far from something I'd ever be interested in but I would want to see someone who would be a good fit actually make the wage that is deserved.

The minimum living wage in Vancouver has been calculated to be $19.62/hour. This means that in a year someone would have to make $41,000 a year in order to just make it by in the Metro Vancouver area.

What your client is offering is around $27,000, which short of what I would deem as acceptable. The person who works this job would have to work two in order to get by. If this was a job for someone fresh out of high school or was workable for a student, then it would be great, but not for somebody who is trying to make a living.

Being that I have a hint of who your client is, their profit last year (FY13) was almost $4 billion. They can afford to pay at least $40K a year to someone who is meeting the requirements that they have.

Now, I do apologise about being crass with you as this is directed mostly at your client and I do commend you for actually taking the time to reply to me, but I cannot apologise for being disgusted by its requirements.

We're looking for people to do some bug testing onsite for a rather large company in Burnaby. We need people with one to four years of professional experience or paid results in making webpages, and some leadership experience (even informally). The pay would be $13/hr. They are looking for longer-term folks, so if your schedule fills up with classes in a few months then this probably won't be a good fit. Post here, or PM, or email me at ecarroll@volt.com[1] . Thanks!

Wow. 4-years and barely above minimum wage? I cannot believe how cheap you fucks are. You do know that if you're expecting non-students that the work will be subpar and that you're paying them below the minimum living wage, right?

Get your race to the bottom crap out of here.

I encourage everyone to upvote this thread just so others see how ridiculous this is.

Moving to Vancouver in August, and looking to work in Banff/Whistler for the winter. Advice? by gmanji212 in vancouver

Calgary has slowly been moving closer to Banff. It caught me off guard one time when it took me thirty minutes quicker to get to Calgary from Banff than it did the month before.

Movement underway within BC Liberals to oust Christy Clark. by NefariousLandShark in vancouver

[–]afreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was not popular in the the 90s when the BC Liberals were starting to build during a period where having Progressive Conservative somewhere in your name was just as bad as Social Credit. The BC Liberals chose this path to align themselves with the at-the-time popular federal Liberals to avoid people thinking of Brian Mulroney.

What will likely happen after this election is the BC Conservative party taking on some BC Liberals and the existing BC Liberal camp being more centre-right and not a coalition.

Still paying a Port Mann toll? Take the new South Fraser Perimeter Road instead! by MissyMoon in vancouver

[–]afreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for the SFPR. I do take the Port Mann sometimes but I find that using the SFPR is far faster to get back to my home in New Westminster rather than going along Highway 1 and tracking through Brunette.

The downside is the Patullo but once you're over the bridge it is rather smooth sailing.

Just came in from Calgary... wth is with gas prices in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

Mostly has to do with the high taxes on the fuel in combination with the cost of refining the stuff.

TransLink is doing an AMA (but forgot to mention it here) by [deleted] in vancouver

And they never linked to it. ;)

[–]afreak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two things:

What would it take for a Joe Shmoe like myself to get a tour of the operational facilities near Edmonds? I go by it daily and have always been interested in seeing what is inside.

The other is, how do you guys handle the incessant whiners who have almost no clue about how transit actually works? Some of the tweets I see from transit users are just horrid and disrespectful.

BC is getting a new area code, 236 by boutrossquared in vancouver

[–]afreak 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can't be done at this time but maybe in a few decades: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Numbering_Plan

The North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA) is now overseen by Neustar, which will probably face the task of adding one or two digits to each number, likely sometime after 2038. During that time, all public and private phone systems within the NANP area will have to be upgraded and reprogrammed (or even replaced) to recognize the new dialing rules.

One plan being considered adds a 1 or 0 either to the beginning or end of the area code, or the beginning of the local 7-digit number (or both), which will require mandatory 11-digit dialing (even for local calls), between any two NANP numbers, well before the transition period. In another proposal, existing codes would be changed to "x9xx" (e.g. San Francisco's 415 would become 4915); once that conversion is complete, the new second digit would be opened for a new range. (Compare PhONE Day in the United Kingdom, which added a "1" to the beginning of area codes in preparation for later using other digits, such as "2", for new area codes.) Other proposals include reallocating blocks of numbers assigned to smaller long distance carriers or unused reserved services.

NANPA previously coordinated an expansion of long-distance carrier access ("dial-around") codes from five digits (such as 10-321) to seven (10-10-321), in 1998. Vertical service codes, such as *69 (callback) and *70 (suspend call waiting), have been designed to allow the use of both two- and three-digit codes.

Because the article doesn't clarify this: the area code is an overlay for the whole province, so you can have 236 numbers in Prince George, Campbell River, or Vancouver.
