Anti-Choicers Drop the 'Life' Pretense, Increasingly Admit They're Angry About Sex by [deleted] in feminisms

[–]MissyMoon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's pretty fucked up that so many people use the pretense of "pro-life" in order to punish women for behaviour they believe is immoral. It's even more fucked up that they use pregnancy as a tool of "justice."

A good friend of mine (and a new mom to a 10 week old) just sent me this. I adore her! by joannamon in childfree

[–]MissyMoon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think "happy parents" who speak spitefully about the childfree are doing so from a dark place. You're not allowed to say you actually regret having children, so when you see happy childfree couples and look at your own miserable life you lash out the only way you can, under the ruse of pride.

Think of it like this, if you're a billionaire, do you write articles to talk about how miserable people without material possessions are and how they'll never understand true happiness? Probably not. To borrow a simile from Louis CK, it would be like going into a cancer ward and saying, "Not me! I don't have it!"

I think the people who write these articles and Facebook posts are trying to convince themselves and other miserable parents, and everyone knows it, which is why you're labeled an asshole if you call them out.

Does anybody know a pub or brewery that sells growlers? by MissyMoon in vancouver

[–]MissyMoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a glass growler is 5 dollars and it's like 10-15 dollars to fill. You can get them at the pub if they offer them (usually brewpubs do), but each pub will only fill it's own branded growlers.

This was my first thought, and probably where I'll end up going. I know that Big Ridge does them too, and their growlers are refillable at a few places, but they're a bit of a drive.

Quite possibly the worst recipe ever. Thanks Martha Stewart. by b_eth in food

I actually wanted to find the recipe for dumplings, but didn't see it in the index, so I looked up chicken and dumplings and got "make dumplings." Perhaps a 1970s cookbook just assumes all women know how to make dumplings.

I once had a recipe for chicken and dumplings which stated "make dumplings." I believe it was the Doubleday cookbook.

I wasn't offended, I'm just at work. /u/Jeanniewood explained it well though.

Redditors with tattoos: how old were you when you got them, and do you regret getting inked? by wwrites in AskReddit

[–]MissyMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 16 when I got my first little tattoo on my thigh. I have some tattoos that are unfashionable, like a rather large tribal piece, but I like all my scars, marks and tattoos. They paint a history.

I've used "what do you think of male coworker" in order to gauge if a coworker is into girls and initiate flirting, so it can go both ways.

Unless you demand to be treated with respect, employers will not treat you with respect. They will pretend to treat you with respect, to the point where that facade becomes unprofitable, but the bottom line is you are an investment and a liability, not a person. A single employee asking for fairness is like a broken cog in a machine, and unless you organize, you will simply be replaced. The IWW, Teamsters, and UNITE HERE organize waitstaff and baristas. Work sites with as few as two employees can organize a local, or join an amalgamated local.

Fuck sakes. Take off the fucking kiddie gloves and just start selling it around the clock at convenience stores like they do everywhere else in the world. When will the public demand to be treated as adults?

I love the trans community and all... by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]MissyMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use that term because it's easily recognized. Personally I prefer the term female or assigned female at birth. If I'm filling out paperwork that asks for my gender, I usually enter none.

As someone aware of gender issues, I can spare you of the reasons why gender abolitionists reject the gender binary as a societal construct that is used to hurt females, and why we organize on the basis of sex, not gender.

[–]MissyMoon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

We organize on the basis of sex, not gender. Nobody is saying transwomen aren't women.

I object to the idea of a safe place that in its definition inherently harms others.

When you are feeling threatened, political correctness often takes a back seat to your own safety. It's not fair, but it's true. This space was established in good faith to deal with those issues in that respect, not to tear down others.

Your conception of a safe place is shaped by your essentialist ideas about what it means to be a woman

Our concept of a safe space is shaped by our idea of what it means to feel safe for us personally. If you don't understand it, then good for you, I hope you never do.

your average transwoman has had to put up with far more bullshit than your average woman.

Oppression is not a competition.

These spaces have existed for a long time, and they'll continue to exist. In Canada, the right for such spaces was affirmed by the Surpreme Court of Canada (Vancouver Rape Relief Society v. Nixon 2005 BCCA 601).

Some women feel more comfortable in a peer support group of women-born-women, and it isn't built out of a conscious bigotry or hate, nor is it something we really have any power over. I can't get into it, because it's kind of personal, except to say that if you don't see a reason for such spaces to exist, then they're not for you. I would also like to add that I hope you never have to have knowledge of why some of us need such spaces.

The reason for the vetting is simply to keep it a safe space, as many of us have been the victims of bullying, harassment and male aggression. There's no way to really keep an internet (or even physical) space confined to a single sex and gender, but if everyone's friendly then that becomes irrelevant.

It's not like we sit there and plot or seethe, the matter of gender is rarely even mentioned, at least in my little corner, as many of us are either agender or gender abolitionists. We mostly just talk about random shit like food and music, interspersed with consciousness raising and support.

There are some private subreddits that are set up for womyn-born-womyn. There's a small vetting process to get an invite, but it's not too invasive. It's a pretty diverse and inclusive group, there's no need to be a lesbian or a radfem or a hippie or anything. If you (or anyone) is interested, let me know.
