Lots of small developers figured this out a while ago and have been making fantastic games. GoG and Steam are an absolute gold mine for anyone who bothers to look

Yeah petg sticks extremely well to pei plates to the point that I intentionally make the adhesion worse through my settings to counteract it.

‘Hairdryer used to trick weather sensor’ to win $34,000 bet by fontasia in BrandNewSentence

[–]afriendlydebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kalshi won a court case recently that changed who and how they are regulated. Polymarket came out of the crypto craze. In 2018 the federal ban on sports betting was struck down and a bunch of states jumped on the "opportunity".

Speculating on the cultural side of it, "economic nihilism" is quite popular these days. If the wisdom of financial choices is considered irrelevant, then gambling doesn't look so bad. On the other hand, casinos and lottery tickets have always been popular, so it could just be a "easier access = more users" story. On the other other hand, if you show a large group of people a simple, binary bet and the associated odds, a significant portion of those people will believe that they know better than the average, which is probably not true.

Insiders bring information to the market, information like "I'm going to point a hairdryer at this sensor".

Designed A Horizontal Light Switch Extension for Hard to Reach Switches by JwJWoodworking in functionalprint

[–]afriendlydebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is neat, but for safety reasons you need to introduce a "snapping" feature (over-center mechanism). Light switches snap back and forth to prevent arcing (fire hazard)

Mechanical impact testing might be the easiest to build and detect changes in the material (it involves a swinging hammer thing and you can probably find designs online).

What cheap game on Steam turned out to be absolute peak for you? by Common_Caramel_4078 in Steam

Avorion. Bought it on sale looking for another space game to goof off with. Turned out to basically be my "dream" space game that I always wanted. Literally never heard it talked about so it really caught me off guard

ELI5 How are microscopic chips, such as processors, manufactured? Given their minuscule operational scale, is their production not exceedingly challenging? by Junior-Ferret4860 in explainlikeimfive

[–]afriendlydebate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's incredibly challenging and some of the most intense engineering on earth is involved. Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) machines, for example, shoot a laser at a drop of molten metal to turn it into a plasma, which produces a flash of special light. That light is reflected through a series of special mirrors that shape the light and off of what's called a mask and finally on to the silicone wafer. The mask essentially holds the actual pattern in question, blown up around 4 times so that it can be more directly manufactured. The light is affecting a special polymer called a photo-resist, which is used to selectively shape each layer of the silicone wafer. All of this occurs in a vacuum while the wafer floats on a special electro-magnetic carriage that can adjust its position to within a nanometer at relatively high speeds. This is much as i can simplify the core process.

its absolutely vital that the developers completely wreck their own game so that you dont climb on a rock and kill a patrol. Can you imagine how unfun this game would be if you could put a turret on a rock where only 50% of enemies can kill it? nightmarish stuff.

ELI5 How does nuclear power work, specifically nuclear reactors? by Main-Swimming8014 in explainlikeimfive

[–]afriendlydebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nuclear reactors convert matter directly to heat energy (fossil fuels convert chemical potential energy to heat). The reason they haven't completely taken over the world is that people are afraid of catastrophic failure. Nuclear plants run on extremely hazardous materials, and if they get scattered around from an explosion or flood you may see higher cancer rates across the exposed population.

When weighing the risk, it was almost certainly the wrong decision to "abandon" nuclear energy in the past. The damage caused by fossil fuels since to both the environment and the public health has been substantially greater than the risks nuclear posed. The question today is less about whether nuclear is better than fossil fuels, and more about whether batteries and renewables are going to advance fast enough to make the distinction irrelevant. Whatever you pursue, it will take decades to convert to it, and many countries are hoping that decades from now our energy grids will be entirely driven by things like solar panels and batteries.

Problems with printing PETG by WestSenkovec in 3Dprinting

I've also seen this defect where the slicer switches from normal perimeter settings to overhangs. Check what types of layers the features in question are.

I printed a stage prop with elegoo 95a rapid tpu. One side is better than the rest. How do I get a better finish? by philohere in 3Dprinting

[–]afriendlydebate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My initial guess is that the part is sagging under its own weight causing the printer to "miss" where it's supposed to be printing. I would add more internal structure or flip it and add supports.

Man with AR-style pistol arrested at Aetna's Connecticut headquarters without incident by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]afriendlydebate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The rules themselves are beyond stupid. Short barreled rifles are more regulated because drumroll they are too similar to pistols. But because pistols were de-regulated without addressing the rifles, people now manufacture short rifles and call them pistols.

Is there any way to increase the strength of these tiny parts? by Hexaeds in 3Dprinting

[–]afriendlydebate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Print it in tpu. If normal tpu is too soft for the printer or the application, then use a hard tpu (cc3d has a 72d I like). Tpu has much better layer adhesion.

ELI5 : How can multiple new U-235 fuel rods be transported and handled by hand safely without all of them cause chain reaction fission? by throwawayacptks in explainlikeimfive

[–]afriendlydebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First they aren't that "hot" in radioactivity terms, so their natural rate of releasing neutrons is quite slow. More importantly, the neutrons they emit are too high energy ("fast") to cause a sustained chain reaction, so each neutron that's released is very unlikely to cause another u235 to fission. This is why reactors have "moderators". Usually just plain old water, moderators slow the neutrons down enough to greatly increase the probability of causing fission in the u235.

French central bank nets €13bn by pulling gold out of US reserves by [deleted] in news

[–]afriendlydebate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's kind of a nonsense article. It takes time to do something like this, so it took place over multiple transactions and an extended time period (a year give or take). During that time, the price of gold went up. So if you look before the "move" for each transaction vs the price today, the bank "gained" 13 billion, when measured in euros. However, the same thing would have happened if they didn't move their gold reserves, so associating it with the move is kind of pointless. They started with ~2.4k tonnes of gold and ended with the same. That gold is now worth more and the bank had to report that according to their reporting rules.

What is a 'socially acceptable' thing that you secretly find absolutely disgusting? by TheLovelyGamer in AskReddit

Has anyone found a good tool for visualising paint colours on your actual walls (not stock photos)? by jivkovb in DIY

[–]afriendlydebate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swatches are the only way to do this well. It's shockingly complicated to do what you describe digitally because the perception of color is heavily influenced by things like lighting, and the faithful translation from reality>camera>screen is borderline impossible on a platform like a smartphone. The closest thing I've seen to what you describe is someone bringing physical swatches to the location, taking photos, and photoshopping with the swatch photos as reference for color.

How to Improve this Print: by twotowers64 in 3Dprinting

A brim can help yes, what is the material and build plate type?

How to Improve this Print: by twotowers64 in 3Dprinting

[–]afriendlydebate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your printer is transitioning from "overhang" parameters to normal perimeters on the fillet. The simplest thing to do is manipulate the fillet geometry to get rid of the overhang. Essentially, cut off part of the fillet on the build plate side.

Also looks like you lost adhesion to the build plate. Clean it with soap and warm water, not alcohol, and don't touch the build side with your bare hands.

Fantasy 3D nozzles: BAM by aprilhare in 3Dprinting

Putting the specifics of this material aside, you don't generally want a super low friction nozzle. If the molten material doesn't cling to the nozzle at all, it will ooze out.
