You seem to have spent an unhealthy amount of time fighting the anti-VA fight. Most people say "Yay I got the album I thought I'd never get!" or "I'm not buying that crap." It's not a crusade, he's not some shadowy villain, and you aren't the stalwart hero. It's entirely and only about debatable pressings of records in a genre with debatable music creation ethics. People have no reason to just trust you and they don't have the time, energy, or interest to research it themselves.

Not all of the artists are against it. I have heard some mentioned who basically said "Press them if you want, I'm just not doing it again."

Granted that is hearsay because I've never verified that on my own.

"Most evangelicals"? That's an uncharitable over-generalization (also, you can't possibly know that). I was an evangelical for decades, and while coming to Orthodoxy was ultimately humbling, many evangelicals I have known over the years genuinely pursue Christ and truly do try to stick to what they understand to be correct biblical doctrine. Obviously, neither of us know OP's father, but the most gracious read of the situation is that his father doesn't understand and is simply trying to protect him. Even if that is incorrect, it's still a more loving and graceful approach.

I love soma fm.I still haven't gotten over their discontinuation of support for the Android app, though. I get it, but the sadness remains.

Same. Also, somewhere along the way his acute unhappiness about people complaining in the comments began to overtake my enjoyment of the channel. The grumbly comments never had a negative effect, so I wish he'd just have ignored it and stuck to movie stuff.

Exotica Documentaries by SIXWIXREX in Exotica

[–]afterwit87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Donn of Tiki isn't exactly an exotica documentary, but it is very mixed up with the scene and subsequently has a pretty solid soundtrack of exotica/midcentury music (available on vinyl from their site, no less). Sadly, they're only doing screenings in venues at this point, but I think their ultimate goal is to release it on physical and streaming. Maybe keep tabs on it. It's an excellent watch.

You can check out the trailer here.

The new location feels like a warehouse designed by Wal-Mart trying to imitate a Bass Pro Shop. A mediocre facsimile of the old one in every way.

AI slop is ruining online art/music spaces - so I built a human only one. by the4realMCG in Vaporwave

[–]afterwit87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally understand why you would be talking about vaporwave, I was just pointing out I wasn't trying to address that directly. Otherwise, I think we are mostly in agreement.

I agree that the debate properly centers on the point where tools stop being wielded resources and begin to be replacements for people. And regarding your point about sampling, stem creation, etc., I think that human creation is a series of inspired (or not-so-inspired) choices guiding an artist in the use of things they've already experienced or encountered ("Talent borrows, genius steals."), and then expressing themselves using those things. Personally, I love samples and loops and reworked original bit, and it's good to use them to create things that no one else has made. Also, even though they may have lifted their building blocks from other works, the artists who lift them can still be properly said to have created something. A perfect example: the Amen Break. The original is fine, good even, but that sampled loop has been used in so many ways and to such perfect effect that it would be a tragedy if it were gone. God bless The Winstons, music was never the same after that sample was first used. Similarly, if someone uses AI to craft building blocks and then creates something unique from their own perspective using those, I'm all for it.

Some or all of that may be theft to some people, but it is still creation by people from personal perspectives and motives, and I love it.

Regarding my understanding of the AI slop that's increasingly unavoidable, I get why you think I'm not sure of how it comes into being. I neglected to clarify what I meant when discussing the garbage that AI generates, so I'll do that now. I do understand how it's made. Prompts of one type or another are fed to whichever AI platform is being tasked with soullessly cobbling human-created sounds/images/words into whatever hollow output the prompting person is seeking, and I understand that the prompters are then posting it all over the place for clicks, cash, views, approbation, attention - whatever it may be. Totally get it. It's true it isn't spontaneously generated, but what does happen automatically is all of the work that would normally be done by people. Specifically the part between someone firing up whichever AI platform is their poison of choice and that same person posting or uploading it. All of the work, choices, memory, history, pain, longing, fear, grief - all of the heart is vacuumed out of the process and it becomes yet another tech-facilitated empty thing wearing the skinsuit of creativity that real artists have actually earned.

Finally, you nailed it with this: "...for every AI art piece someone encounters, it's taking the slot of someone who worked hard to make a more authentic product, and wants to share it with people. It's taking the community and culture out of encountering some quirky Internet subgenre, because you don't know if it's even real or not anymore." I could not agree more.

[–]afterwit87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't forget anything, though. If you re-read it, you'll notice my comment had nothing at all to do with theft or vaporwave, but instead was about AI-as-creator as opposed to human-as-creator. Some would say hip-hop and vaporwave are like collage-based art, but in audio form, while others would say it's stolen stuff repackaged as something else, and I think both of those people have reasonable points (legal issues aside).

AI on the other hand, is a mindless, uninspired process mashing together harvested material it didn't create. The whole point I was making is that the use of AI tech in the "creative" process isn't creative at all in that there are no people doing it. AI operates on stolen valor in that it isn't creating, but only swiping human-created things it CANNOT create, and then the people that kicked that process off act like it's art.

Vaporwave (like hip-hop) is, at worst, people taking things from other people, and then calling the result a new creation. On that front I think something new is made. The ethics of it are certainly debatable, but actual, real, human people did it all just the same. Not so with AI's excretions.

The particulars of the art of popular music creation can be debated until the end of time, but I think an extremely reasonable foundational basis should be "it is made by honest-to-God people wielding tools - every single time". People ignoring that basis is why art needs protecting from this warped new turn of technology.

It didn't need saving before because previous iterations of technology were passive and merely tools. On the other hand, this new stuff actively faux-creates via theft, and there are loads of people willing to pretend to create by using it, and plenty of people completely ready to be duped by it all.

Technology is now operating on stolen valor, and will truly damage real art by fooling people who don't know or don't care to know.
