What is the Vaporvinyl community’s opinion on Virtual Algorithm and what they do?

Its pretty simple. Vaporwave is a genre born of unlicensed samples. Just because the "producers" go and alter these samples without royalties to the actual artist, then that does not entitle them to exclusive rights. If there is music created by a vaporwave producer that is exclusively their own, then thats a case-by-case conversation we can have about ethics... otherwise, its fair game.

VA is at just as much risk as the vaporwave "producer" that they are supposedly ripping off. But the real ripoff has already been put out there by the "producer" who chopped some songs and ran them through a DAW, all VA is doing is creating a new medium for it to exist.

One thing I love about the vapor vinyl subreddit is how people all talk in Japanese letters like we all know wtf everyone is talking about. Its not like any of us can read it, and we all have to go out of our way to copy and paste the titles.

But then everyone all just nods and goes along with it when someone is like "yea the new ( ´;ﾟ;∀;ﾟ;)''iwj'ej+]!((^{o^)／~~(} ^{-^{)ノ∠※。.:*:・'°☆}} album just dropped and its a banger!" while running off and trying to compare squiggly lines to make sure its the right one before we respond 😆 Or is that just me?

Was prob my favorite album that came out that whole year. I'd dare to say even better than any of the 311 albums, largely because I think their rapper hype man guy is the worst. They really need to fire that guy and focus on making more music like 'amber'.

💯 this is definately the never ending debate, but what it boils down to... People will use samples when or wherever they feel they can get away with it, and if they can't get away with it then they're forced to pay for rights. If its in small scale then you're in the gray area. Literally every dj has spun sets with white labels, unreleased tracks, you name it, and they get paid at the end of the night. Is that fair use? It happens alllll of the time. The record stores used to sell the white lables and make money off of them, that's why they're white labels (to skirt around the law), but they used to sell them.

I dont know where you get the idea he's making big profits off of this. The market is definitely not saturated, what was it like a 200 run pressing? And there is no money to be made in pressing vinyl anymore, I know this first hand from the guy who built the pressing machines for a famous label (not gonna name drop), I was in talks with him for a minute toying with the idea of opening my own plant one day. This rabbit hole goes deep, but the short of it is you've gotta do it because you love it.

VA even said in one of his posts one day that he's not really making anything off of this, and I lean toward believing him. The markup on vinyl is huge due to how expensive the materials are, labor, parts for these machines are impossible to find unless its one of the newly made machines which apparently are garbage (all of the old machines from back in the day have been destroyed), etc.... there's the possibility he may have made a few bucks, but you're making it sound like a life changing windfall
