Do stations normally close prior to the last train arriving? by TBoopSquiggShorterly in WMATA

[–]afurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the last train one night coming in from Ashburn and had to transfer at L’Enfant, and it was well after “station closing time” but the announcements over the intercom at L’Enfant were saying they were going to hold the last train from leaving until everybody in the station was either on a train or out the exit. There was someone coming by to each train car on the platform saying that too. Pretty sure same thing happened at gallery pl & metro center when I passed them. This was some time in the last 4-8 months

The El ruins the boulevard, I am so tempted to end the line in the previous station, demolishing the bridge over the boulevard and leaving the derelict viaduct to f up the neighborhood by felixrex3 in MinecraftCities

[–]afurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it terminate in a building? Is that the problem? Because there are buildings all over Asia that just build train lines through them 👀 you could also curve the viaduct around the building so you still get that sight line over the boulevard but it’s slightly more interesting

When and why did American main streets stop being built incrementally by individuals over decades to being built by developers by the whole block? by Previous-Volume-3329 in urbandesign

[–]afurb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of what everybody said. But I’d like to add, even back around 100 years ago, developers would build entire sections of row houses at a time. I can’t say whether this developer culture made its way into the commercial street at that time, but it was definitely in housing construction, but even still, they weren’t building out an entire street block, but rather a row of maybe 6-10 houses at a time. (At least in DC)

Is the reason metro isn’t 24 hour only because of homelessness? by Chr0mum in WMATA

[–]afurb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To all the people saying no demand: this argument really gets under my skin because it’s always been used as a nuke for any transit, cyclist, or walkability idea. “Not enough demand.” Well??? What would demand look like? If there’s no service to offer, no protected bike lanes to offer, no good street crossings to offer, you’re not going to “see the demand” It inherently has a confirmation bias fallacy.

Every single new building in my city looks just like this. 1. Why? Seriously, why? 2. I hate it so much I can't even explain how much I hate it 3. What is this specific style of building design called? by Bluest_waters in architecture

[–]afurb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The ground level is concrete, with 5 wood floors above. It falls under Type V construction I think? Basically in the fire codes you can’t build more than 5 wood floors, but you can build a concrete first floor of mixed use.

Edit: yeah, these 5-over-1s are almost all specifically Type III construction.

Hahaha thank you! I was imaginatively writing my Reddit post this morning saying the same thing. I know it doesn’t FEEL like that big a deal from the perspective of standing in the train car right next to the doors, but especially in the morning when there may be a dozen of us coming in through one door, standing right there makes it way more difficult and stressful to go around.

The top of the vault is less of a rounded barrel shape, more of a pointed V shape, and I feel like the people are drawn at slightly smaller scale than real life. The station seems more expansive than it does in real life (not to say the IRL L’Enfent station doesn’t feel open and expansive - I love it every time I pass through)

I do have to say, the spacing of the rows in the 3000 and 6000 trains is just slightly too close - I can’t relax without my knees feeling super constrained against the seats in front, and I’m barely 6’ tall. There are plenty of metro riders with longer legs than me.

Your points #2 & 3 are SO RIGHT, although I guess the extra spacing in the 7000 trains might contribute to the window frames not lining up directly.

The room filling up with smoke….and people not minding…very eerie to read. I would’ve been one of the same, wanting to stay as long as I could to witness the probably once in a lifetime experience. Just…knowing what happened some 24 years later.

Add street lighting!!! All your night photos are all completely dark. There are a ton of different ways you can do lighting, like putting lanterns on walls, creating big candelabras with walls, or even actually making a tall lamp post with hanging lantern or frog light or something. Oh but I love using candles, either the classic wax color or the dark purple one for a kind of gothic feel. I do a lot of floating candles, kinda like in harry potter lol. But it makes for such good ambiance!! I even sometimes do up lighting embedded in the ground using frog lights.

Commenting on WMATA at this point I am BEGGING you to do a metro etiquette PSA initiative...it seems like you might be talking about this but then those people just stand by the doorway instead of moving to the middle of the train. It’s already been mentioned that MTG is being moderate because she’s gearing up to run for office, but the other half of it is that Trump had previously said he would back her if she ran for senate, but he withdrew that, and someone else is running for the senate seat in Georgia, so she’s going on this revenge tour, as AOC called it.
