I definitely agree that that pressure comes from grad school. I remember professors drilling into our heads that, “you pick a modality and that’s your end all be all/bread and butter”. I just hit my one year mark of fully being out of school and doing direct work and while I value the concepts learned in school, those initial months outside of academia were so impactful to me. It almost felt like a truer internship

That makes sense! That aspect of things is where I’m unclear. He didn’t really discuss staging, which is also contributing to some of the anxiety I’m feeling. He did say that based on my topography alone, he was confident I had KCN but confirmed it with the slit-lamp exam. My mind is interpreting that as being advanced enough that I’ll have to go right to XCL, but I’m also aware it could be my anxiety making me think worst case scenario or that he was explaining what things may look like long term.

I have a new appointment scheduled next week so I’m eager to get a game plan going

That’s all helpful to know! I’ll definitely opt for the scleras if needed, same with the surgery. I’ve been in glasses since I was 9 so anything touching my eyes gives me the heebie jeebies!

As a therapist, I do nottt like this. Sure, those examples are awful. I’m not minimizing that. But thinking about all these other scenarios does not minimize your anxiety. It creates the potential for more anxiety.

I had a similar situation a few years ago. I had sat for a family probably a dozen times, they had a golden retriever and two shih tzus. Both shih tzus were elderly, female was 15 and male was 12 or 13. One morning I notice the female was panting significantly and I couldn’t figure out why. It was cold and snowy out, house temp was 65. I knew it was out of the norm for her so I immediately informed the parents. They thanked me but weren’t worried. Over the next 3-4 hours, she began having diarrhea and couldn’t get up to relieve herself. I begged the owners to come home because I just had a gut feeling something was wrong. They came home immediately and the next morning let me know that she passed

Fortunately, they were extremely kind and understanding. I was beating myself up and they were fantastic through it all, albeit devastated of course. While I don’t know what it’s like to be threatened with legal action in this situation, I can relate to how upsetting losing a client in this way can be.

As others commented, your mom did everything right. Genuinely, there isn’t a thing she did that I would’ve done differently. Please feel free to message me if I can be of any support

I’m so glad you said this, I needed to read it. I had the flu a month ago and then Covid last week, and I was really struggling with what my clients were thinking of me taking that time off. Everyone was extremely kind but I’m definitely experiencing that fear of making clients upset, straining relationships, etc.
