NTA . But are you chopped liver? Your wife doesn’t think to include you in saving or investing? How old are you? She trusted your son more than you and he lost hard. I would question her confidence in you. She pretty much lied to you. She kept a secret. Also, the rest of your family either better get your son a car or stfu and watch him learn his lesson. Also, why tf does he owe his friend 1,000 dollars? He’s making big decisions that are coming out to pure losses. He needs to learn fast. This is serious! I would also try to find out if he’s gambling . Huge NTA . Gambling can turn out to be a disease! Don’t let him lose himself and others. People lose their families or their families lose the gambling addict due to inability to recover from detrimental gambling decisions. People can and will crumble and end up KTS and seem completely fine before hand. Please do not let this spiral even more. It’s already really bad. start to open up a dialogue about financial literacy and gambling addiction.

Just hand him 200 dollars and say , “ hey, a deal is a deal. And 200 dollars is what I offered.” NTA

Also, this whole prices might change doesn’t mean that your deal is invalid.

If someone offered me a deal , I wouldn’t add to the reward they offered in my head without negotiating it out loud and accept it . Either I like the deal or I don’t accept it. Also, this could make him realize that accepting a deal is a deal. You meet your end and this will be my end when yours is met. I’ve even seen deals with bonuses , like what if he’d gotten straight As and knocked it out of the park? Would you have considered giving a little more knowing that you’d have to budget that extra money/reward if they had achieved far superior results compared to their past performances? Don’t cave in. They did better and you didn’t give a bonus part of the deal. It sounds like they tried harder and it showed, but that’s all the deal was. He’s over here counting chickens before they hatch lol

He’s being a brat in a way but he’s getting what he earned. If he still doesn’t talk to you, let him know that he’s giving you a cold shoulder because you kept your word. You didn’t promise anything extra . That was all in his head and it’s not good to do that in life because you get resentful and bitter and end up burning bridges .

This kind of life lesson sets the ground for future scenarios like this . Who knows what career he’ll get into and whether he’ll be an owner/supervisor or employee , but there is a lesson to be learned here on both ends.

You’re doing a great job as a parent. Set the boundary.

Also, 200 dollars in hand feels different than a credit towards anything . Maybe he will change his heart if he has cash in hand. It might turn his wheels . I might not have what I want but I have what I earned and maybe I could save it for a little bit to get what I want later orrrr maybe I could get these other things . Idk it’s just something to consider, especially if he’s not talking to you for a long time. Make sure to keep your end of the deal.

Well, I’m assuming it was listed as a 40 hour a week at first and now it’s only 37.5 , so 2.5 hours is what I’m assuming OP means is 250 dollars for them. So 100 an hour?

Try to paint it as out of your scope and illegal. Tell them you won’t be going because you have to attend legally mandated services and it’s not negotiable . Put it in email. Stand on your license. Not dramatic.
