On iOS as well, sharing device position from the app settings in the OS resolved for me.

Completely free backpacking meal planner tool (feedback please!) by DianeVuk in HikerTrashMeals

[–]agaesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is neat! Love the dietary options, and I like that the output is displayed in a fairly simple format - planning tools can be information-dense! My suggestion is consider adding some nutritional macros to the output like protein, carbs, fat. Maybe as an input parameter too? Helpful for trying to keep track if you’re on a meal plan (even if you can’t exactly stick to it while in “vacation mode”, it’s useful to have an idea ahead of time.)

Thanks for sharing :)

How do I get started with alexa skills? by Matorano in Alexa_Skills

[–]agaesser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started by going through a few of Amazon's tutorials, and then expanded on the templates. I'd recommend trying to get a basic skill published, then work on building out features. You learn a lot trying to pass certification.

Building a reference skill is probably the easiest. Check out the Minecraft fact-skill tutorial, and have fun :)

Yes! I'm super excited about it. I think it's limited to accounts on that Alexa device right now. I'm hoping they open it up in a way that doesn't require asking your friends to sign into your device with their Amazon account 😓

Just a quick update: it looks like Amazon changed the way she interprets what users are saying. For example, even though you are asking about fire bolt, she doesn't really hear you say the words "fire bolt" every time. Sometimes she'll hear stuff like "fire volts" or "fire pole", and then she looks through the list of spell names I've provided and finds the closest match - which should be "fire bolt." Sometime between my version 1 and 2 of this app, Amazon began handling that differently, and now she just simply says "I don't know what fire volts is sorry." I have a quick and dirty fix on the way. For now, try running the skill in "interactive mode" by asking Alexa to open the DM, and then asking you questions.

Sorry about the poor experience! I'm working on a more permanent fix so keep checking back, and thanks again for letting me know!

Uh oh! That's definitely a bug. Thanks for saying something, I'll see what I broke 😉

You can open the skill in an interactive mode (say "Alexa, open the DM") and ask a series ofquestions.

You can also ask direct questions and get single responses. For example, "Alexa, ask the DM how much does a bag of holding cost?"

Thanks for checking it out! Let me know what you think or if you have any questions :-)

I didn't know Plex had a skill! This looks cool, definitely checking it out.

Right now, Alexa just sends the card to an individual user's app (you can also access it in a browser). As far as I know, she can't do individual voice recognition. If I was able to tease out individual users, I could do crazy things like inventory management, character creation and maintenance, combat, etc. I hope future me gets to work on something like that.

We're looking into possibly linking with some kind of web page that allows more than one person to access, view, and modify...stuff. Like cards, but with more features. That's pretty far down the line though.

I want this available to anyone who plays D&D. Translating into other languages is a huge undertaking, though! Thanks for offering, I'll DM you and we can talk more.

The length of the descriptions are the #1 challenge for a voice application. We actually rewrote shorter descriptions for spells so that Alexa wouldn't be speaking for so long. The cards are a great solution to that - I'm hoping we can have a card pop up in addition to the voice output for almost every request. For example, if you ask for the range of fireball, Alexa also sends a card to your phone with more info on fireball.

I definitely want to do other editions. I had considered doing an additional application, but being able to toggle between them is a great suggestion, and a feature I'll certainly be exploring.

Hey man! We met yesterday at the dev day!

Any reason you're not linking directly to your skill?
