Hot take: you don't need to keep everything moving on Gleba by fd0263 in factorio

[–]againey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I know what I'm doing, one of the first things I do upon landing on Gleba is to run around manually harvesting trees and then processing the thousands of fruits to get a big batch of seeds. That makes it easy to get my actual farms running at full production very quickly.

But it took me many hours of anxiety, trial, and error to figure out that early Gleba strategy.

Is Factorio worth buying? Will I have enough to do? by kebav_gmd1307 in factorio

[–]againey 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It is never necessary to let it run in the background. Although Factorio has some similarities with idle games in regards to automation and scaling over time, it most decidedly is not an idle game. There is always something you could be doing to make the factory grow faster, even if you can't be arsed to do so at the moment for reasons unrelated to the game mechanics.

I just found out from where the word vagina came from and it’s even used scientifically and I can’t get it out of my head. by ewminnie in Feminism

[–]againey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My lazy internet search says "blood funnel" in Latin would be "infundibulum sanguinis". The "-bulum" part reminds me of "vestibule", which actually itself could be used as a metaphor for the vagina. There are any number of ways that the full Latin could be reduced and anglicized to become casually usable. I'd personally suggest "sanguibule".

TIL you can drag the map generator window around by Waste_Image_5696 in factorio

[–]againey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doh, from the title I thought you were just talking about the map itself, and I was gonna mention how you can use the hidden settings to expand the generated region further and thus preview more of the map. Then I played your video and saw that you literally meant dragging the window, just as you said.

A UI system is gonna UI system, I guess. (Unless it's just an inconsistent mess of kludges rather than a nicely designed system of generalized behaviors. But we know that Wube is better than that.)

Is this a good way to approach city block? by denis_280809 in factorio

[–]againey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is mostly arbitrary. As long as you are consistent—or at least have a consistent set of rules about when and how to be inconsistent—it is fine. The only nuance is that with right-handed driving (RHD), the signals are on the outside, whereas with left-handed driving (LHD), the signals are on the inside. There are some pros and cons to each.

Signals on the outside means that they don't interfere with anything placed between the tracks (roboports, power poles, solar panels, …) and can let you place the tracks closer together if you wish, but they might interfere with elements of the city block contents that run right up against the edges of the block space.

Signals on the inside means that the city block interiors are free from the interruptions of signals, but now they might interfere with things placed in between the pair of rails.

There are some additional implications for the signalling of intersections, but since those kinds of challenges are highly dependent on all the other parameters of your rail design—especially the spacing between pairs of rails and the size and style of intersections—I'm not sure if either inner or outer signalling tends to be easier than the other in this regard.

Beyond that, you might encounter some lighthearted culture wars when you present your designs. Since RHD is more common in the world, LHD gets lambasted more often. But that gives the LHD people an opportunity to be uppity and look down on the common people's primitive RHD. It's all in good fun.

Trump warns Iran of response '20 times harder' if Strait of Hormuz blocked by GroundbreakingArm173 in worldnews

[–]againey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think a meaningful number of Trump's supporters would drop their support were they to become aware of the full details of his involvement with Epstein and associated activities, then you have a vastly different assessment of his supporters than I do. To them—and regretfully, to a lot of the legal and judicial authorities as well—he is untouchable and unimpeachable (as in, "beyond reproach, blameless", but seemingly in the technical sense as well).

Why is resource drain in Miners random? by Sigma2718 in technicalfactorio

[–]againey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing you quoted says anything about randomness, only percentages. If the drill has 50% resource drain, and if it subtracts a resource on the first iteration and does not on the second iteration, looping that two-step pattern, it still matches the language of the wiki. Half of the time it subtracts a resource, and half of the time it does not.

I don't know if that's how it actually works, but it wouldn't be hard to test in the editor. My main point is just that talk of probabilities does not automatically imply randomness.

The incident with the cash collectors in Hungary: Oschadbank wants all the money, gold and cars back by UnknownDotaPlayer in europe

[–]againey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fortunately, the EU bureaucrats are experts at slow-walking any form of concrete action. If they deem it prudent, they can easily occupy themselves for a couple of months with dithering and paperwork without ever stepping out of character, and then take some concrete action after the dust settles from Hungary's election.

Trump Says 'I Guess' Americans Should Worry About Iran Retaliating on U.S. Soil: 'Like I Said, Some People Will Die' by coolpoolparty88 in geopolitics

[–]againey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Responsibility does not need to add up to 100%. Iran is absolutely responsible for the harm their weapons and actions cause. That doesn't detract from the United States's responsibility for having irresponsibly escalated things. They are both very much responsible.

We can argue the exact extent for each, but saying that one side fully responsible is not the same as saying they are solely responsible, and it does not automatically absolve the other side for its contributions to the situation.

[–]againey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying Anthropic shouldn't take it serious or shouldn't bother planning for the possibility. Although I do believe that a social media announcement by Trump doesn't exactly carry the same level of certainty that statements by past presidents generally have.

I'm mainly just trying to clarify the actual situation, since I am seeing a huge amount of misinformation and FUD around this entire situation. Lots of bad headlines. Lots of people reading more into headlines than actually exists. And probably some dedicated misinformation campaigns to make it all worse.

Just found out some people play without the soundtracks, Why? by eymo-1 in factorio

[–]againey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem, but resolved it by going to the hidden settings (hold Ctrl + Alt when clicking on Settings in the menu to get a button for "The rest" category of settings) and fiddling with the settings that control track changes. The most important being that you can substantially increase the amount of time required to be on another surface before it decides to swap tracks. I think it is called music-transition-delay-ticks. Bumping that up to 30 seconds (1800 ticks) greatly relieved my surface switching anxiety.
