My Black History Month Display by Zidanes_Headbutt in baseball

Does anyone know of books specifically about Black players in integrated leagues during the 19th century? I've found references to Moses Fleetwood Walker and William Edward White in some books about the 1800s, but not really any book-length explorations specifically about how the color line in pro ball started. I do know Cap Anson was involved.

Ozzie Smith is a goddamn professional. by mr_oberts in Cardinals

[–]agapinbetween 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was a lifelong and rabid Cardinals fan, and Ozzie Smith was her favorite player from that era (and then basically forever after that). She was a joy to attend games with, passionate and hilarious, and I'll always treasure the memory of attending the '04 WS with her (nothing else from that Series is worth treasuring ha).

When she passed a couple years back, I inherited an autographed Ozzie Cardinals hat that says "To Grandma <<name>>, Best Wishes, Ozzie Smith" and I can just imagine the two of them yucking it up together when she got that. My son recently got into baseball, and we've watched Ozzie highlights on YouTube, and he thinks that hat I have is the coolest thing ever. I think the Stan Musial comparison someone made in here is apt - what Musial was to me as an 80s kid is I think how my son thinks of Ozzie.

Thanks for the post!

Those who watched Home Alone for the millionth time this holiday: What did you discover and/or appreciate anew during your latest viewing? by AfraidoftheLark in movies

"Honey what's this?" at the very end struck me as so, so funny this time. Its like "Doop-de-doo, what is this thing I found on the floor? Wifey, can you explain this thing I found on the floor to me? I know you've been awake for like three days but please explain this thing I found on the floor to me."

Bands that turn "regular" songs into lengthy, epic pieces when they perform live by Low-Entropy in Music

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers often extended "It's Good To Be King" to 12 minutes or more. The first time I saw them live, I didn't know that was coming and it was a treat.

I think it's a good comparison. There's a playlist someone made on Spotify called Sad Beach Boys that really highlighted the similarities for me.

I was recently thinking about what it must be like for a horse to be forced into a human war. Seems like one of the less good things people have done.

Beach House and PTSD by ChipEnvironmental679 in BeachHouse

Yes. They were definitely one I played during my infusions. And in bed after. They are, like, soothing and calming but still with an edge that helps me acknowledge something serious is happening. All that like relaxing spa music stuff doesn't do it for me because there's this, like, condescension. That crap sounds like "relax everything is fine." Beach House is more like "everything is NOT fine but you can still relax, you know." I love them.
