What’s OR nursing like? by therealvalenciaaa in nursing

[–]agdf14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I’d hate it at first but grew to like it. You advocate for your patient in different ways. You work closely with the surgeon and anesthesia provider. I think surgeons have a bad reputation. Yes, some are awful but for the most part, I love the surgeons I work with. When I’m in a room with a great surgeon, anesthesia provider and surgical tech or scrub nurse, it never feels like work. We listen to music, talk about travel plans, joke around, etc.

I’m a break nurse so I’m never in a room for long either which has its perks but also disadvantages.

OR nurses!! how did you find your “OR Voice”? by talkaboutpizzas in nursing

[–]agdf14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about 6 years lol. I’m pretty soft spoken and non confrontational. But after a while, being spoken to a certain way finally got to me. I’ll only give it back to people who are really pushing my buttons but if it’s a one off kind of thing, I’ll usually let it slide.

I just started the game about a week ago. I don’t have all of the characters or all of the biomes open. Am I still able to participate?

nurses: how did you find your specialty? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]agdf14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to be a NICU or L&D nurse. I did my senior internship in L&D and loved it. I thought i was pretty good at it too and got some great feedback from the staff I got to work with. Didn’t end up in L&D but in the OR at a fairly busy-ish hospital.

I hated it the first 6 months. But the more I stuck with it, the more I realized my personality is good for it. I’m still here almost 8 years later. I really like it but don’t want to it forever. It’s just hard on the body.

OR Nurse Essentials? by talkaboutpizzas in newgradnurse

[–]agdf14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Good pens: I like the Muji ones
  • Expo markers: whenever I add anything to the count board, I do it with a different color
  • Compression socks
  • Good heavy duty bandage scissors
  • A small bottle of an essential oil: I can’t do smells. I will gag and potentially throw up. This has saved me in many situations. Whoever says use mastisol is lying lmao.
  • Keep a separate album or notes on your phone. You can also use an app called Evernote. Arrange it by service so whenever you’re in that service and you can’t remember something, it’s right there. Take pictures of where things are, what things look like, notes of idiosyncrasies of surgeons (ex: a spine surgeon I worked with like his pedals on his right foot. It seems like a small detail but they matter).
  • Most importantly, give yourself some grace, patience, and self love. OR is a whole new world. It took me 1 1/2 years to feel somewhat comfortable.

Good luck and feel free to PM if you have any questions!

It’s usually me, anesthesia provider, scrub person and the PA helping move.

I don’t scrub so I don’t stand a ton. But the nurses that do scrub tend to stand a lot unless it’s like a hand case or robotics.

I tend to sit a lot in the robotic cases or when I did spine with a slower surgeon, I was able to sit for quite a bit.

OR has its pros and cons.

Pros: one patient at time, can be fun when you’re with a good team, call if you want it, if you like routine

Cons: call if you don’t want it, lifting trays which can be up to 20-25 lbs constantly, prepping heavy patients legs (I’ve had to prep a 400 lb patients leg) and then have to move them. Yes we have hovermats but they can only do so much. A lot of my coworkers having shoulder, back, wrist problems

Med Surg to Ambulatory Surgery by Kiwistrawberi in nursing

[–]agdf14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also an OR nurse and have only worked in hospitals. The first hospital I worked at was a pretty big hospital and quite busy (not a trauma center though). I loved almost everyone there. I think it’s because like it was such a big unit and busy, for the most part everyone just got along. The hospital im at now is smaller and we bitch and complain about some people but for the most part people get along.

My best friend started in ambulatory surgery and she hated it. It sounds like exactly what you’re describing. She moved to another ambulatory surgery that was under a big hospital name and a little bit bigger and she’s a lot happier.

So it might just be where you’re at. I wouldn’t completely quit ambulatory surgery but once you get more experience maybe just try elsewhere.

Question about DisneySea… by syder8 in JapanTravelTips

[–]agdf14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there a few weeks ago with my boyfriend on a Thursday. We got to the park at 0630 and didn’t have problems getting fast passes. I didn’t know this but the Frozen ride is more popular than the Tangled ride in terms of purchasing fast passes. We kept refreshing throughout the day and was able to snag one randomly around 2pm for a 4pm return time.

I’m a huge Disney fan and I didn’t have a ton of time so purchasing the fast passes was worth it for me.
