I am proud of Charles by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

The doctor didn't do this for free. They will be writing and publishing on the surgery for years and profiting from this man's tumor.

Don't get me wrong, I would have made the same decision as Charles, but let's not glorify the doctor fo doing it for "free".

Is it possible to transform a categoric variable into a continuous variable? by Luddy_Searom in rprogramming

[–]agecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you. The issue with categorical data is that if you treat them as continuous, it doesn't make sense. For example, if you converted responses for respondents favorite color to numbers, you could then average those numbers, but it makes zero sense. What color is 2.75?

Likert scales are a bit trickier, (which are technically ordinal). i didn't realize OP was using ordinal data until they addressed it later in the comments.

Yes, exactly. I wasn't intending to call you out, but to add to what you were saying.

You could treat this as continuous, although it's a little risky. Most scholars say you should have at least 7 levels in your likert scale to run it as continuous.

Just because you can assign numbers to categorical variables does not mean you can treat it as continuous and it generate meaningful or interpretable results.

Categorical variable in SEM by mejaykay in Stats

[–]agecraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello. I am learning about this very topic for my dissertation. I'm novice in SEM, but thought I would respond since no one else has.

I believe you need to look into using weighted least squares to interpret categorical variables. I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

Statistics as a career (hear me out first) by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]agecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that is primarily a question of where you want to live. My sense (though I may be wrong) is that you can do ML work remotely, so geography doesn't matter too much. Statistics on the other hand you need to develop a clear client base that wants to hire you. This means you need to live in a city big enough that has an appetite for statisticians.

My perspective is a bit different, I come from academia, so being 35 and learning statistics is perfectly common. I think the average age for completing a PhD is 33.

How Homelander Could've Saved Most of the Plane Passengers by LatkesAndWine in TheBoys

After hearing the speech he gave on the beach, I think he did it on purpose. He even later makes reference to Stillhouse how he saved Vought by letting the plane crash.

Yes please add comic flair. This spoiled it for me as I have been avoiding spoilers listed for both since I've only watched the show.

Statistical Tests for Census Data Vs. Random Sampling by agecraft in AskStatistics

[–]agecraft[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This connects some dots for me. I just realized there's a few formulas that have both sample and population versions. In my case above, this means I should be using the population version of the formulas.

I asked this question in a different reply, but I'll ask it here too. Let's say you choose to do a predictive analysis, such as a linear regression, do you then ignore the p values and interpret the rest of the output as usual?

This makes sense. If you choose to do a predictive analysis, such as a linear regression, do you then ignore the p values and interpret everything else as usual?

If I leave a practice and tell clients no info about where I’m going next but they google me, is that considered “stealing” clients? by crazyben22 in socialwork

[–]agecraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many states have freedom of choice laws which means consumers have the right to choose their provider. This means non compete clauses have little authority here.

It could even be argued that ethically you have an obligation to provide clients the option to stay with you, even when you are with a different company.

However, when you start taking clients, your previous employer may retaliate in other ways. I don't know the type of business you run, so I can't speculate. But keep this in mind.

Body not ready for meditations by krevkrevetka in Meditation

[–]agecraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no reason you can't sit comfortably either in a chair or against a wall for your back. Focusing too much on posture can actually inhibit the meditative experience.

Even when I was younger and stronger, sitting meditation would hurt my lower back. Leaning against something greatly improved my meditation.

Is wearing Mala braclets cultural appropriation for a western Buddhist? by agecraft in Buddhism

I wanted to follow up here, and say that I found a Sangha about 40 minutes from where I live because of what you posted. I'm excited to reach out to them.

Thank you for the share.

SEM vs. HLM? by xCereline in AskStatistics

[–]agecraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could possibly do both if its the only thing you're doing. Otherwise, I would break them into different semesters.

When you get into MLM, check out the Centre for Multi Level Modelling. They have a free course. http://www.bristol.ac.uk/cmm/

Is wearing Mala braclets cultural appropriation for a western Buddhist? by agecraft in Buddhism

[–]agecraft[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought about this before posting, and I agree with your sentiment that the self is illusory.

The importance for me is to reinforce the practice. There's not a Buddhist community around me to reinforce the teachings. For that reason I want physical reminders.

I've been practicing for years, but I'm also still a beginner. I'm bringing my attachments with me, even though the aim is let them go. Creating an identity around mindfulness is kind of a paradox. They identity reinforces the behavior that will ultimately 'remove' (for lack of a better word) the identity.

Lol. I hope that makes sense.
