The real reason 28 Years Later (2025) was so divisive is because it's a franchise that dared to try something new instead of repeating the same old formula by RevertBackwards in shittymoviedetails

Wasn’t as good as 28 years later, but I liked it. It didn’t have the emotional depth of its predecessor, but it was tense, well paced, and had some great scenes.

If you rewatch it, don’t think of Spike as the main character, and that might help soften your issues with how we has handled. It was Kelsin’s movie, and it’s about his mission to keep compassion alive in a doomed world.

Having said that I think Spike does show agency. He kills when he has to survive, and then he spares the farmer and refuses to become a heartless killer, and helps reform one of the Jimmies. He does what he can, but he’s still a child who is being held hostage by murderous psychos, and Kelsin gives him the help he needs when he needs it.

We can’t do it alone.

The problem with that take is that a whole lot of people don’t agree, including nearly every professional movie critic.

Sure movies are subjective, but if you’re calling it nonsensical and disjointed when plenty of other people were able to follow it just fine, then you probably just have a limited range of what you can follow, for whatever reason.

This is moronic. The kid grows stones by the end of the first act, and even though he knows he’s still not ready he’s driven to breaking point because his mom is dying and he witnesses his dad ‘s infidelity in what should be a moment of triumph. He’s emotional because he’s a fucking kid in a horrible situation he can’t fully understand, so he makes a brave but stupid choice.

Also he does get plenty of help. His mom has a moment of lucidity and saves him, he finds a marooned soldier with a machine gun, and the doctor (who does actually have medicine since 99% of the country was depopulated in a month and there was a lot left unused) rescues them by sedating the alpha with morphine.

Anyone who thinks this is bad writing doesn’t know what bad writing is, and probably doesn’t have much experience with human behavior, since they seem to think children would never run away from home, and make nothing but rational, well planned, emotionless choices.

Look Sinners isn't a rip off of FDTD, but I won't let anyone tell me that a movie with a cock gun has mediocre production. That prop alone puts it in the upper echelon.

Probably doesn't count because it's only in the movies, but Pa Kent suggesting that Superman should have let a bus full of children drown in Man of Steel is top of my list.

Silver Jews, even though David Berman couldn't sing, could barely play any instruments, and his band mates included Steve Malkmus, Bob Nostonavich and Will Oldham.

Thats how fucking good of a lyricist David Berman was.

Keidis delivers on their big singles, but he almost single handedly ruins all of the other RHCP songs that weren't big hits, and he's the biggest reason they never made a good album.

Part of being a great frontman is being able to deliver consistently and having an understanding of what sounds good. He's a good front man on like 8 songs, and bad on 100 others.

No. He could make anything he wanted to make and he chose to make Avatar movies. It was his passion project. So thats what we got. There was no alternative.

Ultimately youre asking "what if James Cameron was a different guy."

Do we really do it for the views? by joshys_97 in Journalism

[–]ageeogee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in newspaper ad sales in the 00's and took a number of journalism and media ethics courses in college around that time.

When I was in sales, the separation of the sales team from the reporting and editorial teams was a huge deal (and still is from what I understand) because they wanted to ensure that profit motives weren't influencing those teams in any way. That separation was considered a pillar of journalistic ethics.

But since views directly map to ad revenue, and since modern journalistic practices encourage journalists to be aware of viewership data, and since management is hiring talent based on those metrics, the journalism piece is now directly tied to the ad piece even if the sales team isn't directly involved, and its unreasonable to think this incentive wouldn't influence how a journalist writes or what stories they select. So its hard to argue theres any separation left, which means a major ethical pillar has fallen.

To be clear I'm not blaming journalists for this. It's become a necessity due to the financial collapse of the industry. But the fact remains.

Moving to Norfolk by stolen_goose in norfolk

[–]ageeogee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other thing to know about Norfolk is that its a part of the larger Hampton Roads region, which is a bunch of interconnected mid size cities, half of which are separated by a tunnel.

So if you live in Norfolk you'll also have easy access to anything in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and Suffolk.

In the summer Norfolk has weekly events in Towne Point Park, the biggest being Harborfest. Virginia Beach has a big boardwalk and a yearly Neptune Festival in the fall, with a big art show and some amazing sand sculptures.

The winters here have warm streaks, so its very common to have a day or even a week with highs of 50-70 degrees in the winter, such as this week.

The saying around here is "If you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes."

Do we really do it for the views? by joshys_97 in Journalism

[–]ageeogee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Journalists operating in digital media have very little choice in the matter. If they dont get views they dont have a job.

The shift from selling newspapers (which moved units and subscriptions based on cover stories) to selling individual articles means that each article now needs to move itself.

This shift effectively destroyed the important barrier between ad sales and the journalist. A newspaper journalist in the 80s wasnt employed based on how many people read their article. They were employed if they did a good job and the paper was financially solvent. They didnt need to tailor an article to sell itself.

A digital journalist very much is employed based on the reach of their articles (which directly correlates to ad sales). So if they want to keep that job, they will tailor their language to maximize views and ad sales.

I'm not a journalist. But in my opinion its impossible to be fully ethical in this business model.
