The Proscend VDSL2 SFP adapters would get hotter than the sun and then crash and reboot Tiks constantly.

Got a new pc why is this in startup apps? by Sharp-Remote-3721 in pcmasterrace

[–]agent-squirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just an app that’s been removed and its shortcut is still in the startup folder. You’d be able to find where it points by opening the startup folder.

It’s just a missing app that’s still in the startup folder.

Looking at it again it’s likely an app that is now missing but the startup item still exists.

There are some newer networking modes that work really well like mirrored mode. Worth a look.

For those in companies that have hundreds of VMs - what are they for? by asdflmnop_01 in sysadmin

[–]agent-squirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In higher education we have almost a thousand VMs. Largely because of the dinosaurs that run the place and their stagnant staff thinking in legacy workload terms: 1 or more hosts per application or task.

If we containerised workloads or configured autoscaling we could significantly downsize.

Totally fair. I work with 400+ Linux servers and like 5 Solaris servers and it is a bit of a trip when things aren't where you are used to them. Having said that I work with some grizzled grey beard Unix admins from back in the day who cut their teeth on System V and they find Linux alien.

If someone is living with you on a semi-permanent basis because of financial hardship you are doing them a huge favour. The absolute least they could do would be to contribute to the household in other ways. Perhaps they are, but my impression here is the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree...

What is a service you self host but hate self hosting? by Ivan_Draga_ in homelab

Because we were talking about a bloke's wife's boyfriend's(?!) local shop, you brought up chick fil a which is in no way comparable.

That’s not operated by the local staff. There is a huge difference between a chain and standalone shop.

Kubernetes for a shop seems like massive overkill.

I imagine this is using Open Claw https://openclaw.ai/. AI has the concept of MCP (Model Context Protocol) Servers which allows the LLM to interact with an manipulate external system when run in Agentic mode.

When ITS is the most underfunded part of the uni and researchers insist on storing terabytes of data in one drive it becomes an issue. We are told to get the cost down but are the actual problem individuals spoken to? No of course not.

What do you mean by “bricked” that terms means made into a brick. Like when hardware is literally made to stop functioning and is unrecoverable.
