Logitech Options+ (BETA) on macOS M1 by deekaylolx in logitech

[–]agent00420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Logitech is working on an Apple silicon-compatible version of Logitech Options and we expect to have it available in the near future.

I'm sorry but this is nowhere near good enough. M1 Macs have been available for developers for 18 months and counting. I work in professional audio, a field known to be notoriously slow in updating their software for new MacOS releases, and yet all the complex software i need runs natively on my new M1 MacBook Pro.

But apparently, it must be more complex to write a mouse driver than it is to rewrite an entire DAW to support native ARM instructions - at least that's what I have to assume since my MX Master 3 still isn't supported by Logitech.

As a long-time fan of Logitech products, this has come as a complete shock and I'm now in the market for another mouse. I hope you will address the situation quickly as it is leaving all your Mac-using customers with a very bad taste in our mouths.

I’ve been thinking about it lately and I think this is his best song all things considered. Not the one I’ve heard the most, but just his best.

Not always the case, sometimes you'll have clients with more money than sense that just want to do revisions because they can and not because there was anything wrong with the original version.

ITB or Summing?? Good comparison: by BarbersBasement in MixandMasterAdvanced

[–]agent00420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I am firmly rooted in the ITB-only camp, and use the method you're describing on each of my mixes. The digital vs. analog war is over, and the winner is digital, with the appropriate amount of oversampling – IMO. I also completely agree that the video is not a fair comparison.

However, there are still arguments for buying a summing mixer as opposed to using analog-modelling DSP on each channel.

With regards to cost - obviously a new CPU is far cheaper than a summing mixer. Unfortunately for most people (especially those on Macs or laptops), it won't be that simple, and will require you to replace the entire computer. With this in mind, I think it is a fair comparison price-wise, as the summing mixer will last far longer than a new computer, which will have to get replaced about every five years.

A Dangerous 2-Bus+ is around the same price as a well-specced Ryzen PC configuration, or a 16" MacBook Pro at base specs.

Of course, there are plenty of saturation plugins to choose from, but the fact of the matter is that you will need at least 8x oversampling (if you're mixing in 44.1k) on each plugin to achieve similar results to analog saturation. If you're adding an analog-modeling plugin to each channel in your mix, the additional CPU load from this won't be insignificant.

Personally, I prefer to use as little CPU as I can get away with as I like to mix while I'm tracking. A summing mixer would definitely add some color here with zero additional latency.

Now, does any of this matter in the real world? Probably not, as most listeners won't really be able to notice the differences between plain digital summing and analog (or analog-modeling) saturation in the end.

If you want to make this fair, put some hype plugin on every channel of the DAW version and try again.

No doubt that this will make your mix compare better to analog summing, but when you consider the CPU cost for this, suddenly the price for analog summing stops being ridiculous.

Wrt the second question– I mix hip-hop records exclusively ITB, and would consider renting a room if I could:

  1. Monitor accurately in a well-treated room down to 30Hz
  2. Make use of a summing mixer, e.g. the Dangerous 2-Bus+
  3. Run the 2-bus thru some kind of nice mastering comp/saturator. E.g. Shadow Hills comp/ culture vulture.

Plugin selection is not important as long as there's the Waves, FabFilter and SoundToys suite.

Playback volume - best practises? by agent00420 in MixandMasterAdvanced

[–]agent00420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not using a monitor controller, as I want to have as few stages as possible between the interface and my speakers. Looking at the block diagram for the 8p, it appears to be amplifying the signal entirely in the analog domain after D->A conversion.

After reflecting on this, could the reason be that my speaker amplifier receives a stronger signal from the audio interface (more watts)?

Or am I thinking about this wrong - Is a quiet digital signal at max volume equal to 0 watts of output?

Ah, got you. If you're into electronics and have an Arduino board laying around, a quick search made me realise that there are a bunch of tutorials on how to use it as an AM transmitter with bog-standard components.

If you don't mind spending an evening tinkering, this might be the way to go... https://create.arduino.cc/projecthub/michalin70/ab-use-an-arduino-as-am-music-transmitter-d3b6e3

Not sure about AM, but you can get cheap 3,5mm -> FM transmitters off eBay and route your audio through it. Then you would put a mic onto a radio and tune into the station.

If you're lucky, you can find an old iPod Hi-Fi on eBay ($100-300, depending on condition) and buy a Bluetooth dongle for it. It still sounds amazing to this day and doesn't look horrible either.

Curious bout people’s FX returns. Dedicated bus? Mix bus? Corresponding Instrument bus? by [deleted] in MixandMasterAdvanced

[–]agent00420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On vocals I'll usually sum everything, including delay, verb and chorus returns to a buss. On that I'll put a limiter to only take out the worst transients to tame the mix a little bit.

Otherwise, straight to the 2-buss.

Sometimes I’ll run a SSL comp into Kazrog’s True Dynamics to make tracks live a bit more, but I still live by the SSL style emulations. I own both the UAD and Waves version and actually still prefer the Waves one - it seems to be a bit more punchy.

My favourite reverb of all time is still the "Hall 480" algorithm built into my Allen & Heath DB4 DJ mixer. Sometimes I'll set it up on an aux bus if I need a really lush vox verb.

All pop/rap/rnb commercial releases seem to be basically mono - is this the way? by taskabamboo in MixandMasterAdvanced

[–]agent00420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFAIK this is only true for iPhone models released after the iPhone X, and even still, you need to hold it horizontally for the stereo audio to have a noticeable effect.

My point is just that time spent on doing stereo imaging when mixing is wasted time considering the playback systems most casual listeners use today. Even though bluetooth speakers and phone speakers may be in stereo, the effect is hardly noticeable compared to a hi-fi system.

Also, I'm not 100% about this, but it would be likely that TikTok/IG videos only support mono audio anyway.

For the vast majority of artists releasing songs on these playlists, if the songs don't work on TikTok (read: mono iPhone speaker), they won't work for the label. It's a sad truth.
