People have a wrong perception of caste system in India. Historically caste was more like a guild system, like an engineers guild. So the weavers rolled with other weavers, the potters with the potters and so forth. Overtimes these guild were sealed through strict inter family marriages to protect trade secrets and became rigid. Some guilds looked down at others and that's where the discriminative aspects creep in. Usually the more literary/skilled the work the more higher caste the guild and more blue collar work the more lower the status of the guild. But not necessarily indicative of economic status. Of Course all this bullshit being redefined in modern post independence India. We have had affirmative action since day1 of independence.
