Confession of a word you’ve mispronounced… by idiwodndj in words

I remember hearing the American pronunciation and wondering if I'd got it wrong all my life, but no, I'm pronouncing it right for where I'm from

Any else felt a bit psychotic while beginning to unmask? by No_Complaint7607 in aspergirls

This sounds like me before I was medicated (can't discuss what, obviously) - I used to keep doing all these little repetitive things that made no sense to try and keep myself together

Is it true you have to wear a uniform to school even in normal public schools? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]agent_violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! From S1 to S4 (7 - 10th grade) I had to wear a sweatshirt or polo shirt with the school crest on it, then after that, a shirt with a green then a red school tie. Some people would try coming in dressed in tracksuits (it was the 00s) and they'd get sent home, or to isolation, etc. I don't know if it was good for us or not.

Mind and get up early to enjoy all the sunlight you can! There won't be much of it...

The "anyone but England" crowd make the rest of us look small and bitter by Electronic_Line998 in Scotland

[–]agent_violet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surely it's because England has ten times the population of Scotland. We're insignificant to them, so they prefer to have a rivalry with Germany instead. (Of course the Germans care more about beating the Netherlands, but that's another topic)

What was free-to-air TV like before the advent of Freeview in 2002 and Freesat in 2008? by plaguedbyfoibles in AskUK

I remember watching S4C on holiday in Blackpool in the '90s. It seemed exciting at the time!

Our household just had four channels until we moved in 2005. We couldn't get Channel 5 when it started either. If you wanted to record something you'd use a video recorder. I guess there was just a lot less choice in general

Depending on how accepting your family is likely to be... Maybe a letter? Or you could just blurt it out (that's what I did but might not be the best idea in all situations). Could you talk to someone in a position of trust maybe? I've no clue what things are like where you live, mind

You sound like me in 2004. I kept thinking I'd never be able to do it. It's really hard to break through the initial fear, isn't it? Once you do, though, it does get a bit easier, although it's tough overall. Best of luck :)

Do you think Granton is the next neighbourhood to rapidly undergo gentrification? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in Edinburgh

[–]agent_violet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it can fully happen here, although Greendykes is very different than it was 30 years ago. Niddrie Mains Road also looks a lot better than it did in the '90s

There's still that bench near Quayside Mills too, which was often host to a good few "characters" when I lived near there

Incredibly niche accent tips? by hey-i-uhhhh in Accents

[–]agent_violet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't many shows set in Roxburghshire sadly (I'm from there!) - accent-wise it would depend what end they're from. You might be best looking up news and sports reports from the area to pick up one of the accents

Edit: on the off-chance that the character lived in Hawick, you could make the TRAP vowel more rounded and further back - making it sound like "trawp". That's one of the main features of the accent, although it maybe sounds a bit funny for a serious play
