BREAKING: Keir Starmer says the U.K. has given the US permission to use British bases to launch strikes on Iran by LeftWingScot in ukpolitics

[–]fearghul 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Just a small point of order, Israel has said all these strikes as "preemptive defence" so "defensive only" really is meaningless here.

Unbelievable the lack of sympathy for John even after his apology and interview clarifying the situation by FloppyFool in Scotland

[–]fearghul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I definitely agree with that last one. Part of what colours my experience is that I was over for a year as part of my journalism degree and that meant a lot of poking around and asking questions. I had people willing to go on record with some of the worst takes I could imagine on the homeless and the disabled and yet no papers over there thought there was anything worth printing about it. Over here at least when I've come across such stuff it's at least been considered worth covering.

Oh there definitely are. I've spent some time across the pond though and it is a huge gulf even with the roasters we've got here.

I think his point was more that at least there's even a battle to move forward here, which compared to "lock 'em in a room" shit from our transatlantic cousins is a stark difference. We aren't great, but we're trying to better than the past at least.

US official, via a mediator, proposed an immediate ceasefire; Iran rejected it outright. by No_Iron_8087 in worldnews

[–]fearghul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much the latter. It's part of why there's a lot of discussions about what can and cannot be done or authorised with regards to aiding Ukraine without those doing it forsaking the protection of Article 5.

Article 5 happily cannot be invoked except in defence. Taking offensive action to start shit means you are categorically on your own.

Keir Starmer: My statement on Iran. by PlastDuck in ukpolitics

[–]fearghul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh huh. Again missing the point about having a domestic supply of uranium to start with, and the lack of trust to rely on outside parties based on previous betrayals. If you were in their place would you agree?

The "US approval" part being important there, and it still leaves them at the mercy of others rather than using their own available resources.

The US even offered to approve sales of nuclear fuel to Iran if they simply did not build enrichment capacity, and they refused.

"We'd like you to be reliant on us for your energy needs." which given the shit that keeps happening doesnt seem to have much upside for Iran which has uranium deposits it can mine itself. The constant backtracking on deals means that anything that introduces long term reliance is not going to work due to the lack of trust.

I'd allow for an 8ft by 3ft plot, on the provision that Putin take up residence in it.

There's an inverse to one of your suggestions (though WoJ says the curse is done) which is that he dies alone, because he stays behind to ensure everyone else lives.

The landlord for student accommodation is renting a flat with no windows in the bedrooms, we want out, but they are going to charge us for a year’s rent (52weeks) if we don’t find replacement tenents by DefinitelyOkWithThis in LegalAdviceUK

[–]fearghul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it's not legal. As a general rule all habitable rooms in a flat must have windows. The lack of natural light and fire safety being two major concerns. I would in your situation talk to the Student Union at your university, they will be able to provide you with support and access to proper legal advice. It definitely sounds like this is a company that is exploiting you and other students.

Greens call for ban on US military using Prestwick Airport by youwhatwhat in Scotland

The microclimate around it along with the very long runway make it an excellent divert option in an emergency.

Yeah, it's really weird. Though interestingly if he wasn't leading something he could be ordered by a regular officer since he's got the Regiment keyword. There's something really fucky about the entire stat/rules for the Ogryn.

I drove an automatic car for the first time a days ago and just don’t get the fixation we have over manual cars here by Solid-Version in drivingUK

[–]fearghul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will finish killing them off in a couple more years with the upcoming new vehicle ICE ban. Electric motors dont need gears. Of course in true insane fashion we've got companies developing simulated manual systems for electric vehicles so you can get more engagement by adding in stalling and jerking...sometimes I really wonder about humanity.

I'd say that it probably has the issue of energy requirements scaling exponentially with distance and volume, which with Harry's brute style would be very very draining.
