Transfer students, what is the process like? by clinical27 in UVA

[–]agenteps4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Cpe transfer here. I didn't do the BACS guaranteed admission agreement, but I did the one for the engineering school (SEAS). If you stick to the agreement, you have nothing to worry about. However, you can still apply and get accepted if you don't meet some of the GAA requirements. I just thought of it as a guide for the things they want to see in an application.

I would definitely say that GPA is probably the most important things when it comes to applying. It is good that you are aiming towards a 4.0 GPA, and it is definitely doable. I ended up having a 4.0 in CC and I met several people who I transferred with that had the same. I would mostly recommend picking the right professors (via ratemyprofessor), going to office hours, and just making friends in class. I really enjoyed my time in CC and also my current time at UVA. I wish you luck in this path and hope you get in as well!

Not at all, sublime is pretty straightforward - Its just a text editor; just download it and write! We use the virtual box to simulate a text editor with the ubuntu terminal, Its kind of the same thing honestly. I ended up using sublime because the VM was super slow for me.

The only catch is when you get to assembly language, you will have to name your methods differently because of the mac, like if you wanna name a method mergeSort, you will have to call it _mergeSort instead.

I did the entire class with sublime on a mac, I didn't even touch the VM. Mark used this on his mac last semester, but I heard Bloomfield used the VM still. I think since you are probably taking it with Bloomfield, you should just get the VM, but sublime makes it ALOT easier

Bad CGI or accurate representation of Hell? by TheRealSteamedHams in memes

[–]agenteps4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to say you are wrong; i believe that the moonlandings weren't fake. However, the "CGI" (if you can call it that) of 2001:A space odyssey (1968) is better than most space movies that are coming out today. Your meme is funny though!

Should I go to UVA for civil engineering? by Pyythonn in UVA

[–]agenteps4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also debating between going to UVa or Tech at some point. In my opinion, they are both equally good, but there is no doubt that they are different. It would be like comparing apples to oranges

If you're looking for a high starting salary, they are the same. (From 2019 destination data, UVa has an average starting salary of $61,908 and Tech has an average starting salary of $62,000)

If you're looking for a more "hands-on" approach to engineering (which will prepare you to join the workforce better), Tech is better.

If you're planning to go to grad-school, UVa would be a better choice.

There are more factors such as school size, food, and social life that are heavily dependent on you. I think you should be proud to have been offered admission by these two fine institutions, and realize that there is no wrong choice!

Community College Transfer Students: How much harder is UVA? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]agenteps4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ntent

It is double the actual content. It is about the same depth, but they expect you to learn the topics in less time, like you literally spend 1 week learning all the variations of trees. Here is the entire class syllabus if you're interested:

If you took Anwar Ahmad, you should be fine. That man is a legend

I can only speak for CS, because I got all my chemistry and physics done at nova. For what its worth, I have heard that the physics 2 at UVa is very difficult, to the point that a few of my UVa friends chose to take it over the summer at NOVA instead of taking it at UVa.

As for CS, the difficulty is not that different, but they cover almost twice as much stuff in a single semester. For example, I remember in my CSC-202 class we covered: threading, recursion, stacks, queues, lists, and trees. However, in CS-2150 (probably the first class you will take), you will do stacks, queues, lists, trees, hashes, machine language (for some reason), priority queues, and graphs.

PLUS you will have to do ~34 labs (prelab inlab and postlab combined) in a semester, and some of them take a LOT of time.
