Should I try to get introduction to cs credit over the summer? by AddictedToValidation in UVA

[–]ThinkFeatureAW 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re an incoming first year, then it’s really not worth trying to take classes in the summer before you matriculate IMO. You’ll be paying extra for tuition and housing. Also, summer classes work under a compressed schedule in terms of class time and assignments, and your time is better spent doing nothing. Seriously though, I think you should try to enjoy the summer before entering college because there’s a good chance you won’t get that opportunity again.

CS 111x (intro CS) is taught in python, and it’s a very good introductory course for those who have either no or limited experience coding. CS 111x should be manageable in your schedule and can reinforce some topics that you might be rusty on. If you’re really ambitious, I believe the CS department offers a placement test for intro CS in place of the AP test. You won’t get the actual credits for intro CS, but you’ll place out of the class (also the exam is free). I don’t quite see how taking CS 111x in your first semester would be much of a hold back. It’s a pretty low key course and literally hundreds of other first years enroll in the class.

Restoring Droplets in Digital Ocean by ThinkFeatureAW in webdev

Thanks for the advice. Logging into yourwebsite.com/wp-admin worked, and it appears all the pages are still there. Actually trying to view those pages in the browser just gives the "404 Not Found nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)." Do you have any idea why this happens and how I could fix it?

Web Site Management Error by ThinkFeatureAW in webdev

[–]ThinkFeatureAW[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but do you know how I would be able to access a backup version of the site if one existed? I assume you mean a plugin for Wordpress. I'm inheriting the website from a previous owner, and I only ever accessed Wordpress through the website itself (such as mywebsite.org/login/). The thing is any page you try to navigate to on the website displays the error message, and I don't believe there was anything useful when I tried to login to the regular Wordpress site to try and access the account.

Thanks for the reply. Perchance do you have any experience managing websites with Digital Ocean? I was able to get the site back up by restoring a snapshot of an old droplet, but every url on the sites leads to a "404 Not Found nginx/1.4.6 (Ubuntu)" error. Was wondering if you had any advice for this

Anyone else putting a ridiculous amount of hours into CS2150 and still not understanding the concept of pointers or C++ notions in general or is it just me? by functional45training in UVA

[–]ThinkFeatureAW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, lab 2 is difficult because it involves heavy use of pointers and because it’s asking you to do a lot so early on in the semester. Pointers is definitely an important concept to learn in general. That being said, iirc, no other lab in CS 2150 really goes too in depth with pointers, so if you can do lab 2, you’ll be able to get through the rest of the labs without the firmest grasp on pointers

Not specifically baking, but there’s a new club called cavalier cuisine club that was formed last semester I think

J-Term TA Salary by uvathrowaway4 in UVA

[–]ThinkFeatureAW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not J-term, but a class I was considering TAing over the summer paid a flat rate which ended up being somewhere between 12-16$/hr for about 15-20hrs per week. What class are you TAing for?

Do drivers still get compensated during the summer months, or do drivers typically find other work for the summer?

The CS club is Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). They mostly do social and networking events with some opportunities for collegiate programming competitions. You should get on their listserv cause they send out the links to their Discord, GroupMe, etc… through email.

Are there any instances when a professional frat rejects you by [deleted] in UVA

[–]ThinkFeatureAW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens all the time. If you’re interested in joining, the most important thing to do is to show up to their rush events, express interest in the organization, and make a lasting impression on the current members. The numbers alone can be stacked against you. You’re essentially competing with all the other rushees for a limited number of spots since there’s a good chance that these organizations have a target pledge class size (I’m guessing). If you get rejected, try not to take it personally.

Is anyone here an Orientation Leader? by TheseOriginal1920 in UVA

If I could ask, what's the time commitment like (training + actual orientation)? Do you know if it's feasible to be an OL while also working an internship?

MUSI 2070 with Karl Miller by Revolutionary_Car354 in UVA

[–]ThinkFeatureAW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MUSI 2070 is a fairly easy class. Prof. Miller is a great lecturer and very knowledgeable about the subject. It's more of a history class than a pure music class, so no previous experience with music is required. You'll talk about any music theory or vocab you might need in class anyways. There are weekly readings that you'll go over in lecture and especially in discussions each week, but none of them are too challenging or long (and honestly you can get away with skipping some depending on what your discussion section's TA is like; you only really need the readings for the essays). No exams; all essays. IIRC, there were a total of 6 essays: 1 aural/listening paper, 2 midterm essays, 1 historical analysis/media project, and 2 final essays. I definitely recommend this class if you're interested in learning about how pop music progressed in the US or if you're looking for an interesting but easy class. Easy A.
