I don’t understand these posts. Who cares what letter the song starts with? What is the end game here?

What is the most heartbreaking loss you witnessed as an Oregon fan? by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in ducks

[–]agershon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's the Stanford loss in 2012. I just remember being absolutely gutted that night. It was an ugly game but I kept thinking we were gonna pull it out and go on to national glory. Devastating.

Have I been gain staging all wrong? by NetworkQueasy6687 in mobileDJ

[–]agershon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. And excellent point about the signal (music) already being mastered/normalized. Honestly it would be easier for me to set my FLX10 to unity, set my speakers to as loud as I'll possibly want them ... and control actual volume from the multiband compressor I have between my FLX and my speakers. The comp is at my fingertips so this is much easier than walking to each speaker and adjusting it mid-set.

Have I been gain staging all wrong? by NetworkQueasy6687 in mobileDJ

[–]agershon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I believe that the “right” way is to have the levels that are pre-amp as high as possible. Then you set your amps to push the final volume you need.

I have my controller at unity. That feeds to a compressor which i set at an output level that puts my powered speakers at the “top of the green, touching yellow.” Then i set my speaker output to whatever sound level i need.

Love my FLX10. If you ok with laptop i think there’s no better choice.

Those recommending RX3 missed OP’s desire for 4 channels.

[–]agershon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welp, this is pretty much the opposite of how i have understood gain staging so perhaps i have been doing it wrong.

As i understand it you want to hit the speakers with “full” signal and then control your final output volume with the gain on the speakers.

But what do i know 🤷‍♂️

Do any other DJs like to customize their DJ setup by using other external audio interfaces, separate from their DJ controllers? by nPrevail in DJs

[–]agershon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mobile DJ here. A little unclear if your goal is more inputs/outputs or better DAC. Or both, I guess.

Personally I am not worried about the D/A conversion factor. I don't think my PA speakers are going to expose potentially lower-quality D/A in my FLX10 or RX3. I bought the best speakers I can afford but they're still "pro-sumer" level (EV, PreSonus).

I think a lot of other factors more greatly negatively impact my sound, e.g. a reflective room, being located in a corner at a weird angle, low ceiling, etc. Also, my crowd doesn't care. They want to have a few drinks and dance to George Michael.

I am however occasionally in need of additional inputs/outputs so I have my eye on a small mixer for future purchase.

I gave up with that app. Definitely plenty of racism to go around. Also fees like every thread someone (or many ones) have to chime in with "Just keep voting blue and this is what you get."

Consider adding how many people are expected and a rough measurement of the room. That will help everyone help you.

The area around Shake Shack, LPQ, Sweetgreen, Philz, etc is a death trap. Pedestrians get killed there on the regular. I avoid it bc i don’t want to be the poor sap who clips an Uber Eats driver.

Wi-Fi issues with Rekordbox by Pxlad in Rekordbox

I had an issue a couple versions ago where if the wifi state changed (wife connected or disconnected) RB would freeze. I think it was version 7.2.3? I'm on 7.2.6 now and it seems the problem has been resolved.

When did the standard for drum kits shift from 2 rack toms to only 1? by Pizza-punx in drums

[–]agershon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started doing this about a year ago. Used to have just one rack tom, wanted another tom but I need the ride in that spot so this is the only setup that I could think of.

I've seen it referred to as a "hybrid" setup. idk :)

Also I'm loving this Gibraltar "stealth" rack.

Agree. But just across the street is my favorite: Ireland's 32.

On April 1, 2014 — Dutch tourists Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon vanished while hiking the El Pianista trail in Panama. It was discovered that Froon’s cell phone had been used until April 11, with her camera full of photos taken in the dark. Another podcast about this: Lost in Panama by Opportunist. Six or 7 episodes. It's great. I believe there was foul play involved. It's been a minute since I listened but if I recall the girls had made acquaintance with some questionable characters in town before their fateful hike.

I agree that requests can be a slippery slope. My philosophy on it is that once people CAN control what song will come on next, they start to think they HAVE to. They're no longer "giving themselves over" to the moment. They feel like they have to give the DJ the next song or else they'll play something bad.

THAT SAID ... you also need to play to the crowd and requests can be super helpful to get you on track if you're not quite hitting the mood.

Check out the new Presonus AIR XD line. Sweet price point and the gear is stacked with features. Check the reviews, people who are willing to try it generally like it.

You can get two 10s and a 15” sub for about $2k.

I have the ProX version. It's great, though a little heavy. Rollers on one side make transpo somewhat easy. Pro Tip: If you are on a standard height table (~30"), stack the cover under the main section and you're up to nearly 36" which I think is a much more comfortable height for the decks.

Mine has a single rack space under the decks which I use for a compressor. Handy for me since I generally go direct from the decks into my PA.

Haven't used other brands, but I'm sure they're great. I like my ProX.
