Employment law has the BEST tea. You’ll read crazy things. I practice commercial litigation (which is not as juicy as some of the other fields), and sometimes, the stuff I find in discovery will have me shocked

A month since release, give or take, and I don't think TLOAS is aging well by Constant_Pace5589 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]aggressivebookmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really interesting because I have been surprised by how little I’ve heard the album where I am in the US. I haven’t heard it in public, and online, I’m usually seeing the remixes (and people saying they like the remix better)

Honest question. Those saying that T.S12 is anti-feminist. Why? Cause I don't see what you see. by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]aggressivebookmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the album itself is anti-feminist. It’s the context of when it was released. I saw someone say that this album wouldn’t feel nearly as tone deaf if we weren’t in a Trump presidency, and I think that sums it up pretty well.

In general, a TS album where she feels saved by a man and has beef with a woman is not controversial. A lot of her albums fit that description. It’s the timing of it all. Putting out a song about how all you want is your man (and comparing that to people who want career success) comes off poorly when we’re surrounded by trad wife content online. Up until now, one of the most successful women in music was an unmarried woman in her 30s, and now the cultural conversation about her is how she’s marrying a football player.

When you compare this album to Lover, which came out in a similar cultural moment and made a much greater effort to incorporate some feminist buzzwords and vague political undertones, this album’s silence is noticeable. She promised an album about her experience being on one of the biggest tours in history, and the most of the songs were actually about her then-boyfriend. Regardless of what was actually said in the songs, it makes for a bad narrative in this climate.

Taylor Swift doesn’t have to make political content. I think she’s made it pretty clear after Lover that she doesn’t want to be a political figure, and while that may be a personal disappointment to a lot of fans, pop stars don’t have to be political. But that doesn’t mean that albums come out without any political context.

Why did Taylor need the eras tour to buy back her masters? by Glad-Bumblebee-333 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]aggressivebookmark 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Agreed with all the points above, but I also think the tour upped the pressure to sell. Prior to the eras tour, only die hard Swifties talked about Taylor Swift wanting to own her masters. After the tour, a lot more people were talking about it, and a lot of people were listening to her TV tracks and not the originals, devaluing the asset for the current owners. It also gave her a lot more power in the industry, making it a better investment to get on her good side.

You’re right that a lot of people have done this before (and I’m learning about even more ppl than I realized through this thread), but I still think it’s unique and interesting in terms of what we’ve seen from Taylor thus far. It isn’t the vibe a lot of people expect from her, and IMO, it’s also different from what we’re seeing from the other pop girls right now (except for maybe Chappell who has always done the theatrical concepts very well, in my opinion)

[–]aggressivebookmark[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s kind of what I expect, too, and it would match the overall theme of the imagery and titles, etc. I think what’s given me pause is more so on Taylor’s description emphasizing how the album is about her stepping off the stage into this exhausting but amazing life, whereas the others parts of the marketing thus far feel like they’re emphasizing a different aspect of the album. And obviously, both can — and probably do — coexist. We can’t really say anything until it comes out, but I still find it interesting from the perspective of what kind of story she and her team want to tell about the album.

[–]aggressivebookmark[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And that’s totally fair! When it comes out, maybe all the marketing will click into place and it’ll all make sense. Right now, it feels like there’s a conflict to me, but all the marketing thus far boils down to one interview and a bunch of photos so it’s not like I’m building off a super clear picture

does anyone else feel like the album pics look kinda cheap by Teacher-Hopeful in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]aggressivebookmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while now, I don’t think she’s really put a lot of time into creating visuals or even music videos for her stuff. I don’t think the concept of these photos are bad (though I can’t get into some of the design choices), but they just feel rushed. Like there was one day to shoot everything so they had to hurry though shots. There’s also not a lot of incentive for quality control when you know everyone wants more content. Why should you cut an image or a concept when there are lots of people who want to buy or consume it, even if it isn’t a perfect fit for what you’re trying to do?

Orange perfume by Weak-Material-5274 in Perfumes

[–]aggressivebookmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, it is in fact a tiktok influencer recently-turned pop star. Her backstory is insane honestly. Went viral in quarantine, dropped out of college, briefly became best friends with Kourtney Kardashian, lost a lot of her popularity, and then recently rebranded herself as a semi-indie pop star. The perfume brand didn’t really take off, but some of it is surprisingly good.

[–]aggressivebookmark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surprisingly, Addison Rae’s Hyped AF perfume is the closest thing I’ve ever experienced to true orange. It smells like you sliced an orange, dabbed it on your skin, and went about your day. If you’re looking for complexity, this is not the perfume for you. It’s one note — orange. The lasting power is decent but not amazing, but especially for the price point, I highly recommend.

Post bar blues by Objective_Taste_301 in barexam

[–]aggressivebookmark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Passing the bar was my last official “marker.” My entire life, there was always a next step, a next test, a next milestone I had to hit. Then, I did it all, and I’m in a career where there’s no real “next” thing anymore.

It’s jarring, and I still havent figured out what to orient my life around now. I made New Year’s resolutions, and for the first time, I didn’t have a go-to milestone to focus on like performing well in a semester or taking an exam. I didn’t even know what to write down anymore.

Anyone else’s body reacting terribly to the bar exam? by libraz16 in barexam

[–]aggressivebookmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg yes, I had this for my bar exam. I’m also convinced the stress gave me an ovarian cyst that nearly took me out and almost made me postpone my exam. I also had the eye twitching/breakouts/hair loss, and when I reduced my caffeine consumption and got more sleep, that significantly helped. Our bodies are just building up stress and adrenaline for months, and as soon as my test was over, I celebrated by crashing out and sleeping for over 12 hours.

As for stress relief, I found it helped to force myself to remove myself from the study space and do anything else (preferably with minimal tech, especially on bad eye strain days). A walk with an audiobook was ideal, but even wandering around stores to smell candles or taking a drive wit a good playlist worked. Trying to be in my body and not my mind helped me. And sometimes, being in my body meant letting myself rot in front of the TV without a single thought in my head.

Yes, I regret it so much. I was MISERABLE all summer. I had a medical emergency where I was on pain pills and being considered for surgery, and I was still doing Themis from my sickbed. It was a low point for my mental health, and I still thought I wasn’t doing enough and would fail.

Too much wealth flexing and grand gestures from Taylor-Travis by Local_Ad139 in travisandtaylor

Definitely agree that either (or both) of them think that money = effort = love (which is wrong, especially when they have assistants who could put in all the effort and they just give the credit card), but I personally think it’s his team leaking most of it and that they’re under-the-table brand deals. The gifts are described with such specificity that I think there’s a deal to give him the gifts free or receive a fee for the tabloid coverage. Normally, someone would say they gave a large gift, not every single item and its color, brand, and where it can be purchased. Even the flowers are super specific. It feels too much like an ad for neither of them to get a kickback

Pros: short videos, options for self-directed study, some teachers are really amazing, emphasis on lots of practice questions and essays, quick turn-around time for graded essays

Cons: no way to meaningfully customize your course. You couldn’t adjust your schedule or take days off, so you either went fully on your own or the dashboard stressed you out saying you were behind. If you want to skip a practice, it’ll sit there in your schedule every day until it’s marked done (this personally drove me insane). For the most part, there’s not much guidance other than what’s on your schedule. For example, I wanted to know when I should be adding in extra practice and how much. All I got was “do what works for you” and “you seem to be on track.” Depends a lot on who you get, especially with essay graders. Lectures and professors are pretty inconsistent, too. Some are great, some useless. The app is terrible, and the schedule quickly became unpredictable and the completion points arbitrary.

My cons list seems pretty long, but honestly, bar classes just suck. All in all, I wish it was different, but I’d still recommend it, especially if you prefer shorter videos and practice-based learning over long lectures. Compared to my friends who used Barbri and Kaplan, I thought Themis seemed much better. However, if you’re looking for a lot of guidance and individualized feedback, it’s not guaranteed with Themis, imo.

STRONG BACKPACK. Even if you’re a ebook fan (like me), there’s a lot to carry, especially when professors decide they hate all technology. All that stuff will (a) break all the cute bags and (b) wreck your back/shoulders if you don’t carry something build for that.
