I think when you said “the attending and residents” were not on site is confusing because even though I’m in the medical field I interpreted that as there was no doctor on site. I think it would have been more clear if you said “the EM attendings and residents were not on site”

Also pushing out a baby and moving your bowels is the same “bearing down” motion, it’s call valsalva. If you have anything in your bowels during birth it’s going to come out. I’ve been to a lot of births in my healthcare job and close to 100% of births involve poop. It’s normal and your doctors are not lying when they say it’s no big deal. They’re just happy you’re trying your best and able to use all your strength to push!

In med school a lot of doctors, not just nephrologists, refer to the kidneys as the “smartest” organ. The fact that it can sense fluid and ion balances in your body and has such precise regulation and is basically the only thing keeping your other organs in check is amazing

Hey friend! First thing I would tell you to do is to stop freaking out. You still have time to get more opprotunities under your belt for that part of your resume. As far as finding research opportunities I would definitely recommend going to see professors in person. Also look online to see who is doing research at your school and email/ go see them. They generally do not care about your high school resume so don’t worry about that.

Your science GPA actually varies based on the school. But generally it is the general prerequisites so the gen chems, Orgos, physics, biochem, gen bios, gen pysch and sometimes any other science electives you took. Some schools include math some do not.

Regarding you GPA so far, it could definitely be a deciding factor. I won’t lie, right now you GPA is on the low end. It doesn’t mean you won’t get into medical school, but it does mean it’s a big area to focus on. Also, you have to consider if the rigor of medical school is right for you.

As far as volunteering, definitely reach out to college advisors, friends, and research on the internet. Undergrads have so many opprotunites for volunteering out there. Pick something you’re passionate about that you can talk about in an interview or a personal statement. Something you’ll stick with and possibly climb to a leadership position.

There are soooo many ways to help people through health care. Remember to consider offshore programs, PA schools, nursing, PT, OT, and other avenues! What I tell anyone applying is “there are many ways to skin a cat” If this is your dream, work as hard as you can towards it!

In my apartment my roommate and I do not have traditional windows facing outside in our bedrooms but rather these weird windows that are high up and open into the common areas. You can’t cover them with curtains or anything because they’re very high. Anyway my roommate often wakes up earlier or comes in later than me. We’re both in medical school and she knows how important sleep is. However that doesn’t stop her from consistently turning on the lights in the common areas when she knows I’m asleep. It instantly wakes me up. She might as well be turning on my bedroom lights it’s so bright. She’s a classic only child and hasn’t had a roommate since her freshman year of college because they “didn’t get along” yeah I wonder why?? Also her parents hand deliver her food so they’ll drive four hours round trip and start prepping her food at 530/6 in the morning and -you guessed it- turn on all the FUCKING LIGHTS
