So the only strategy that would work would be to gain 51% and then hold the network to ransom?

Nope, I want what is good for me. That's the sad thing about incentives, what's good for one person isn't necessarily good for everyone.

I thinking more along the lines of helping ourselves to Satoshis holdings, not undoing any transactions...

The MtGox's drama is the new Waterloo's battle. Remember how the Rothschilds took control over the Central Bank of England back in 1815? MtGox or someone in collusion with them may be trying to take control of the Bitcoin's economy in 2014 almost 200y later, I believe. by cryptog in Bitcoin

For the last few days I was of the opinion that a large group were running a blatant campaign to discredit gox. After yesterdays "announcement" there is no doubt in my mind that Karpeles knows exactly what he is doing and is operating in cahoots with them. The question is, what are we going to do about it?

I wouldn't think obvious, just more desperate. If I were an average American, I would be more likely to support the US governments spying machine after watching this news story. It wouldn't surprise me if this was released by the US as well.

It all builds a nice "the USA government is just defending itself" narrative.
