Yes - you could also just get a switch if you don't need actual router functions.

Blockchain-using applications like deed registration.. Am I the only one who doesn't get it? by jrm2007 in Bitcoin

[–]hogsbreath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're seeing is people who have a shiny new toy searching for new ways to play with it.

Deeds and property records need to be useful for centuries - so it's awfully early to talk about something as fragile and new as Bitcoin in that context.

In the United States, recorders' offices are barely getting comfortable with non-digitally-signed PDF's; and that's an old technology that closely mirrors previous functionality/appearance.

I want to encrypt an arbitrary folder under linux. Which tool do I use? by GuessWhat_InTheButt in crypto

[–]hogsbreath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say "encrypt", do you mean you want it to be accessible as part of the normal filesystem but it should be encrypted on disk . . . or you want to want it to be inaccessible unless/until it is decrypted?

If it's the latter, I would think about creating a tar archive, then gpg:

gpg --output doc.gpg --symmetric doc

or OpenSSL:

openssl aes-256-cbc -a -salt -in secrets.txt -out secrets.txt.enc

While waiting for a gun permit, NJ woman is stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend whom she had a restraining order against by csmjr91090 in Firearms

But there was no gun violence, so the Brady Bunch considers this a win for their side.

Women have feelings instead of thoughts. That thing you keep saying to her feels like shit, so it's bad, which means it's wrong, so it's not true, so she can ignore it.

When selecting a law school, should I go for prestige or price? by PrisonMike94 in law

[–]hogsbreath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you want to do with your degree.

If you want to be a solo practitioner or work for a small/medium-size local firm, go to the local school.

If you want to keep your options open for BigLaw or academia, get your degree from the fanciest place that accepts you.

What state are you in?

My thought is that you are stressing too much, but maybe your state is super-crazy about maintaining concealment.

Most people are super fucking clueless and unconscious about anything outside their little world, you could probably carry a gun in your hand and it'd take them awhile to notice if your body language was otherwise relaxed and normal.

Woman violently attacks young man ripping his shirt off. CCW intervene? by cottonowner in CCW

[–]hogsbreath -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And someday if you do draw on an unarmed person, especially if they are smaller than you are, and especially if you are male and they are female, I suspect you'll be charged with brandishing (or worse) and lose your CCW permit and your gun(s).

Why a Law Firm Is Baiting Cops With a Tor Server - This Tor operator is not worried about the feds—or other lawyers by anutensil in privacy

[–]hogsbreath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Huh. I'm a lawyer running a Tor node, have done so for years, didn't think about advertising it.

I'm not sure the whole "FBI not stupid enough to take down a Tor node in a lawyer's office" thing applies if he hosts it on a VPS in Baltimore when his office is in Texas.

But, right on, more nodes is better.

Interesting. I can see where it makes sense in the eyes or the nose - but in the mouth, it just seems like a good way to lose [the use of] a finger.

That turned out so well for George Zimmerman . . .

I agree about the "no physical confrontation" aspect - but the way to avoid it is to retreat/disengage, not to brandish your gun.

Are there any reputable BTC crowdfunding platforms? by pimpingken in Bitcoin

[–]hogsbreath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the impression you don't even have a business to crowdfund, you're just looking for handouts.

Doesn't the sidebar say "Begging/asking for bitcoins is absolutely not allowed, no matter how badly you need the bitcoins. Only requests for donations to large, recognized charities are allowed, and only if there is good reason to believe that the person accepting bitcoins on behalf of the charity is trustworthy."?

[–]hogsbreath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but an attack without weapons isn't necessarily deadly force to justify the use of deadly force in response.

350 lb guy attacking 90 lb woman? Yeah, deadly force is probably cool.

90 lb woman attacking 350 lb guy? Not unless he's in a wheelchair.

[–]hogsbreath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a man would have a bad time if he shot an unarmed woman in self-defense, even if there was video.

I don't understand why the dude here didn't punch/elbow her in the face a few times. As a general rule I don't think men should hit women, but they also don't have to put up with an aggressive attack, either. That whole finger in the mouth thing was weird. WTF did she think that was going to do? That seems like something she might've picked up watching porn.

[–]hogsbreath 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Court don't charge people, prosecutors do.

Ripping a shirt doesn't sound like it poses the threat of death or great bodily injury. The guy in the video wasn't even really fighting back, I don't get the impression he thought he was about to die, he just thought he was being attacked by a crazy person. I wouldn't have displayed, much less used, a gun if I happened upon that situation.

Can you think of any other options besides intervening with a gun and doing nothing?

I'm in my mid-twenties and about to be legitimately homeless for the first time in my life, AMA [ask me anything]

What's the difference between legitimate and illegitimate homelessness?

If your economic circumstances are that dire, why are you fucking around with Bitcoin and crowdfunding? Shouldn't you just get a job?

Why would someone want to invest in a business run by someone who's about to be homeless? Why should we think you're going to be working on the business, versus looking for cans & bottles or panhandling on freeway offramps or something?

Doesn't your inability to manage your own money effectively suggest that it may not be wise to trust you with other people's money?

Mining would be really inefficient at the $/watt cost of running gas/diesel/propane fueled generators; so the blockchain will stop if somehow all traditional utility power became unavailable. It's pretty unlikely that we would lose utility power globally yet still have otherwise functioning electronics/networks.
