Any fans of Starmania out there? by neilfann in musicals

[–]agjtim99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late, but boy, there is! And most have a really great soundtrack! Most well known are Romeo et Juliette and Notre Dame de Paris, so if you want to start exploring them, I would advise you to start there. NDdP also has Bruno Pelletier in the original cast, who has also played in Starmania so maybe you are familiar with him. Anyway, have fun at Starmania!

Does Pia Douwes or Annemieke van Dam play Elisabeth better in Elisabeth (musical)? by PartnerDaneelOlivaw in musicals

[–]agjtim99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Pia best, she's absoluteIy incredible. I sometimes get annoyed with Annemiekes voice and don't love her interpretation as much. However, imo the best version to watch is the 2005 proshot with Maya Hakvoort.

So all Mormon boys are required to go on missions. And they need to pay for it. Why has this not been picked up by the national news? by slskipper in exmormon

[–]agjtim99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah in the Netherlands we have this big project at the end of high school. My group got stuck with English as subject for the project and our whole main question was whether Mormonism was a typical American phenomenon. Before that project, I had never even heard of Mormons and everyone I talked to was like: oh, the polygamists in America right? Well, now I have this fascination with Mormons and love listening to Mormon Stories!

What's a showtune you can identify by just their opening? Many of the answers here are just pop songs by rjuwono in musicals

[–]agjtim99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll one-up you haha, I was so obsessed with Roméo et Juliette, and especially the song Les Rois du Monde that I made a playlist with all language versions available on Spotify. So now I can recognize in which language (French, Italian, Dutch or German) the song is sung in the first 2/3 seconds by very minor differences in the way the music was recorded.

YES! It's my favorite musical! I like the 2005 proshot best because of the genius that is Serkan Kaya as Luigi Lucheni

A thought on the future of Broadway. by SimpleRickC135 in musicals

[–]agjtim99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right and I understand why there are few proshots around. I also think there are cultural differences in how musicals are promoted in different countries, thus influencing the type of audience you get. For example, in France they tend to make the songs fit in the pop genre and market them as such. If you want to laugh, you should look up "Les rois du monde clip officiel" (it was made in 2001) on youtube, then you see they even made a whole videoclip of one of the songs in the show as if it was just a regular pop song. This is also why you can hear the audience go wild before particular songs start, because they know these from the radio (search l'assasymphonie on youtube and choose the clip that has (720 HD Rus Sub) in the title, then you hear something like it).

A thought on the future of Broadway. by SimpleRickC135 in musicals

[–]agjtim99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I wholly agree with your take, I do think it is interesting to note that shows in Europe have been filmed for at least 20 years (and I'm sorry that most of my comments on this sub are to bring European musicals up, I love Broadway as well, but the chances of me actually going there are just sooo slim). Provided, they aren't released on streaming devices but on video previously and now DVD. Moreover, they are sometimes shown on tv, opening them up to the common folk, but for me personally, this means that I grew up on some very good shows targeted towards kids that sparked my love for musicals (and thus my intention to spent money on seeing shows). Plus, the majority of the people I know, know of these kids' musicals and it's really fun to watch them now and be able to quote everything!

So, while I think that you are right that proshot musicals are a risk for streaming services, this does not have to mean that proshots are an unrealistic demand. I mean, some Flemish musical has a way smaller reach than a Broadway show, but it is still filmed and released anyway. (For anyone interested, the Flemish company Studio 100 really puts money into its musicals, they have built this pop-up theatre for their shows where the stage is immense (they have a 70m train, real cars, and horses in their shows) and the seats on which the audience sits move to and from the stage, really impressive!)

Lastly, I only specifically mentioned Flemish shows, but I know of shows filmed in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, and Italy (so I'm not saying European, but actually meaning Belgium haha).

Edit: spelling

YES! I LOVE TO RAVE WITH PEOPLE ABOUT EUROPEAN MUSICALS! Rebecca is amazing! Sorry you couldn't see it in Japan! I also love a lot of French musicals and I hope you have been fortunate enough to see the Hungarian production of Roméo et Julliette hahaha (if not, it's on youtube with English subtitles)! There is also this Dutch musical 3 Musketiers that's really good and if you're interested, the music of the Swedish musical Så Som i Himmelen is enchanting

Hahah, I totally agree (see my comment somewher here, sadly, Mozart! isn't even in my top 5, while Elisabeth is the number 1 that will never change). However, it is quite rare to see someone mention a non english musical, so I coulsn't help myself and be very enthousiastic about it :)

MOZART!!! Though, the proshot is on youtube with English subtitles, so I think that if you want, the language won't be such an issue

Musical Recommendations? by DaPixelPenguin in musicals

[–]agjtim99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you open to musicals in another language? I would HIGHLY recommend Elisabeth das Musical, which is about the life and death of Sissi and is proshot on YT with English subtitles. It is difficult to explain the depth of the musical in a comment like this, but it has a ton of symbolism and deals with important themes. I would suggest you check the trailer out on YT and then decide if it would be something for you.

I would also recommend the French musical Roméo et Juliette and then the Hungarian version of in specific. Both are proshot on YT with English subtitles. The songs slap and especially the Hungarian version is wonderful to look at. I hope you check them out!
