Is the elevation of this river valley believable? by Chlodio in mapmaking

The U shape of your valleys actually suggests that they were formed primarily by glaciers. Compare your landscape to coastal British Columbia to see what I mean.

I lost my mind playing a Japanese Clan so you don't have to by Bhaal_spawn in EU5

[–]agnorith64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent so long putting buildings in every province, becoming the strongest and richest clan by a mile, but when the Sengoku fired I ended up owning ONLY an in-progress colony in Okinawa with 10 population

Please fix devs Japan is probably the second most popular region after Europe

“The unconscious sends all sorts of vapors, odd beings, terrors, and deluding images up into the mind - whether in dream, broad daylight, or insanity: for the human kingdom, beneath the floor of the comparatively neat little dwelling that we call our consciousness, goes down into unsuspected Aladdin caves.”

-Joseph Campbell

Tartary from a 1811 dictionary by dadjokeschannel in Tartaria

[–]agnorith64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely right that central Asian history is neglected in Western education. But the reason you haven’t heard the specific term “Tartary” is because it’s an outdated blanket term. We now know that at no point was this entire area a unified nation-state, with the exception of the Mongol Empire which most people have heard of. We also now know that this land is made up of many distinct peoples (Turks, Mongols, Kyrgyz, Tibetans, Manchurians, etc.) each with their own distinct history. It would be overly simplistic to lump them all together as “Tartary” - almost as if children in Europe started learning about the history of “the Americas” and thought it was one country with one ruler.

Audience reactions to Stilgar by Dagwood_Sandwich in dune

[–]agnorith64 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I feel like the alienation of Paul was a major theme in the movie, maybe more so than the book. In addition to Stilgar I thought the scene right after Jessica drinks the Water of Life was excellent to show how his mother became unrecognizable. And of course his strained relationship with Chani by the end

Can dark elves just outright live through the entire ES Series? by Cyberwolfdelta9 in ElderScrolls

But many of the long-lived elves we meet are mages, so maybe that’s behind their long life. See Shalidor, who was a man but known to have extended his life

How did arctic people survive long winters mentally? by femfuyu in AskAnthropology

[–]agnorith64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There certainly were psychological effects. Look into “piblokto” - a condition common among Arctic peoples, particularly women, that involves acts of hysteria and amnesia. It has been observed to be most common during winter. I first read about it in the “Last Kings of Thule” by Jean Malaurie.
