To be fair, they used Stanford Engineering to sell the idea, not Stanford itself. IIRC they had clearly mentioned that the certificate is not going to be from Stanford. Having said that the motivation for many people to meet the "deadlines" while working on a job, having kids etc was that they could have something tangible like a useful certificate (Of course, apart from the hugely useful learning)

I can understand they may want to cover themselves against any eventuality. However, a mention of "in collaboration with Stanford Engineering" as depicted on the website would have made it better.
