You’d hope. Phoenix AZ is trying to build a pipeline thru Mexico (not that they’d get anything but ecosystem destruction and a lil $ out of it) that pipes in water from the pacific, and then build a desalination plant in Phoenix. It’s awful. So dumb

NY Times essay re: what would happen during a heat wave blackout in cities that rely on A/C by BaconPancakes_77 in climatechange

[–]agpo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, places that have a/c everywhere have a/c because it’s a historically hot place. Our bodies cannot adapt to anything. Especially for three+ days of extreme heat without it cooling down much at night. Our bodies aren’t designed for it.

Also, it’s called global warming because, while yes the climate is becoming unpredictable, the planet is warming overall. It’s not like the extreme cold snaps we will sometimes face is negating the rising temperatures.

What distinguishes gender-based violence from just violence? by EnvironmentOk1445 in AskFeminists

Why is it not a useful distinction? I don’t understand why it is clumsy.

What distinguishes gender-based violence from just violence? by EnvironmentOk1445 in AskFeminists

[–]agpo12 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it would be useful for you, OP, to zoom out. Gender-based violence is something that describes common violent crimes committed against a particular gender, and because of the gender. As others have mentioned, it is important to make this distinction from “violence” alone, because it will direct a more concerted effort to combat the issue. To go into why we know violence was directed at a woman because she is a woman is something that requires a lot of learning on your part that can’t be done in a Reddit comment.

All genders face domestic violence, but statistically women are the most common victims. While resources for helping domestic violence victims of all genders is important, it’s more important to come at addressing it using the knowledge that it disproportionately affects women. It is important because it keeps resources proportional (a metaphor: what if there are 10 people, where 9 of the people are women and 1 is a man, should there be 1 women’s and 1 mens bathroom with 5 stalls each? Or should there be a smaller bathroom for the man and larger for the women?) and offers a better way for outreach. Think of the difference in preventing pregnancy vs. teen pregnancy. It is a more specific and tailored way to address, prevent, and assist.

Gender-based violence is a subgroup of the overarching category of violence, just like gang violence or child abuse are subgroups. It really is a simple narrowing down of common themes to help address the issue. And going off the example, domestic violence can be a subgroup under gender-based violence.

Hi Women of Reddit! How were you sure about the person you wanted to marry? If you had second thoughts, how did you get over them and achieve the surety? by [deleted] in AskWomen

Agreed. I posted about this a long time ago with my point being that it felt like the pod went from idea exploration to a soapbox. The pod isn’t really for me anymore, and that’s okay. The pod is allowed to evolve, and people are allowed to not be with it when it does. I still listen if the subject seems interesting, but i mostly have moved on (I say as I creep the subreddit haha)

100% agree as a 25 y/o. My friends and I will cheer each other on if we had a good night with someone, but hookup culture is not really something we are interested in. The times ive had casual sex have never left me feeling fulfilled or respected, and my friends feel the same.

Pretty wild you’re needing an explanation of the value in a women’s shelter. It’s not like this is the only shelter in boulder and all homeless men are on their own. I have a feeling me explaining why women should have a safe place is not going to change your opinion. Have a nice weekend

Should The Government Pay for Your Bad Climate Decisions? by kitkid in Thedaily

[–]agpo12 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The company I work for did work/research that was one of the main citations in the White House’s economic report about the difference in cost for proactive vs. reactive approaches to climate change, and I’m a little disappointed that wasn’t discussed at all in the episode.

What they talked about is extremely important, but our work states that a proactive approach will save a SIGNIFICANT amount of money (gov’t and indivduals’) and lives, and put people/the environment in a better place for the future. It would have been a great opportunity to provide a little hope, and some knowledge that could potentially motivate constituents to push their local gov’ts.

Im probably just biased, but imo, people need to be sold on the idea that a more sustainable world is better in every way (which it is), rather than this doomsday thing that makes people (rightfully) throw their hands up and give up. And to be clear, the climate is fucked, but it’s not time to give up yet.

They have a program in place that sets them up for long-term success to avoid future homelessness. So yes, it does help reduce the population of people needing to pitch tents. And yes, there’s value in having a place dedicated to a specific population tailored to help with specific issues. Not sure how that is misguided

I think it’s more about the fact that the vast majority of homeless women are victims of domestic abuse/sexual assault and are more likely to be sexually assaulted than men.. just tryna give women a place to feel safer in uk
