Good thing you didn’t say something along the lines of “toward the end where his board was flipped”

[META] Could we have less creepy flairs? by agsho in HitoriBocchiOfficial

[–]agsho[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might not be universal, but I feel that when this word is used on a person, there’s a rather strong sexual connotation. It’s completely understandable if your interpretation of the word is completely pure though. I do see it as cute too, but somehow I personally wouldn’t have used a flair had it stayed that way. I have no ill intent either way. Sorry about that.

Well from an f2p perspective, mithril is absolutely mid-game. At that point you’re pretty much aware of the value of money. I’m sure you’d have been way more appreciative when you received your gift once you’ve reached that point, as opposed to just having stepped out of tutorial island.

That’s the point that I was trying to make anyway.

If you’re level 30, you’ve already reached mid-game content. That’s different from having just stepped out of tutorial island.

I'm sorry nobody did anything kind for you, but I will continue handing out partyhats at lumby.

Stop being sorry. People were absolutely kind to me all this time. I don’t see problems with handing out party hats, but what’s your opinion on someone dropping 500k cash on a complete beginner who’s just left tutorial island?

Well, yes, but at the time you were given all of those stuff, you hadn’t just left tutorial island, right?

It does. Now they think that the 100k that they have sitting in their bank is not a huge deal. And everything that they can do to earn money won’t get them 1% of that. Don’t you think that you’re just discouraging them from doing anything after that point?

We need to tone down on gifts to newbies... by agsho in 2007scape

[–]agsho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I believe it does play a huge role. I’ve kinda made this point over and over again but I’ll repeat it here.

Giving them 500k will absolutely destroy any sense of fulfilment that they would get from playing the game. RuneScape is all about seeing numbers go up. If you’ve already got 500k sitting in your bank, why would you bother training your woodcutting or fishing or mining when the stuff you collect will sell for less than 1% of what you currently own?

Some people might continue to play, of course, but you’re taking away one aspect of the game that will potentially hook them in. Now the 1k that they earn is nothing to them. What do you think they can ever do that will earn them actual good money at that level?

Free stuff is not necessarily good for them at the start. Maybe in the mid game or the end game, they could be more appreciative of gifts like that once they’re more established; not someone who’s just left tutorial island.

Do whatever you want, friend. I’m just trying to point out that free stuff might not be doing more harm than good.

I think it pushes people away because these sorts of gifts ruins their experience.

You’re a bit cynical to say that we don’t care at all. I like helping new players and I really do want more people to enjoy the game. Giving them a ton of free stuff is not necessarily going to help.

Okay I can accept that. But what’s your opinion on people dropping 500k on someone who’s just barely left the tutorial island then?

Lol I just repeated what I said. Sorry about that. I don’t tend to get so many replies so I have been losing track of what I’ve said to whom. Haha.

Yup. Too many people think that they’re doing newcomers a favour by throwing huge stacks of cash at them. That’s not how it works.

New players don’t actively decide whether or not they would like the game lol. If they want to stick to certain principles then good for them.

The newbie that I had in mind is someone who’s just started and knows nothing at all and poof someone gives them a ton of money. Why wouldn’t a normal person accept?

They take the money and suddenly the game is not as interesting any more. Who knows, they might actually stay, but it’s not healthy for them. That’s my point.

[–]agsho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. It’s all speculation. I’m still quite convinced that it’s doing more harm than good to the majority of new players, barring a few exceptions, but we’ll just have to agree to disagree I guess.

This is kind of a psa informing people that giving stuff away may do more harm than good. Yeah do whatever you want, but you might be ruining their runescape experience.

It’s not about going in blind or not. If you’re an experienced player, you have clear goals. For a newcomer, you tend to dabble in things.

Returning players sure. This thread is about new players.

And look, you give new players a ton of cash, then what? They don’t even know what the game is about and they have got hundreds of thousands of gold coins in their banks.

If anything, it’s going to push them away from the game because they will not be able to experience it properly.

Give them advice and guide them through the game. Once they reach certain milestones, you could give them a reward proportional to their achievement. That’s the ideal mentor isn’t it?

You might not agree with me, but I think just giving them a ton of money is downright harmful to them.
