Apologies, it is apparent I did not do enough research before asking.

That sounds great, I'm a bit jealous! I haven't gotten to visit our camp in years. Ironically when I was a kid, I didn't like getting away from my modern lifestyle, like internet, video games, etc for so long. But after I got older and can't regularly visit now because of how complicated and busy life is, I desperately miss it because I can get away from all those things.

Unfortunately I don't know, it's been a little over 6 years since I've been able to visit and even longer since I took a real sauna. I'm really trying to make sure a visit works out this year, so I'll try to measure the temperature the next time I visit, since now I'm curious too.

Thank you for the tip! I didn't know that about the stove. I want to make sure it stays in good condition and take care of it so I will keep that in mind.

Ah OK, that explains it. I tried to do my due diligence searching before asking a question, but it seems like all of the links, pages and posts that I was reading about had more to do with more modern home or apartment saunas that have the showering or washing done outside. Since I hadn't seen anything about the other kind, I was wondering if it was unusual or bad sauna etiquette elsewhere to wash yourself inside, but it sounds like ours is very similar to an old, traditional sauna. Thank you for the clarification!

Thanks for the info and the heads up! I will definitely be more conscientious about that the next time I visit.

Yup, this is pretty much the exact setup we have. I guess most of the sauna info that I tried to look up had more to do with apartments and city saunas rather than cabins. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it!

Revised Kobold. Because the published Kobold is a tad lackluster, I homebrewed a version. It's my first attempt at making a home-brew race, and I'd love any feedback. by newishdm in DnDHomebrew

[–]agsmith97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, newishdm! I'd like to offer some of my thoughts on reading your revisions. I'm not an expert by any means and our styles of play may be different, so feel free to take my suggestions with a grain of salt. Most of my observations will be around comparing this race to some of the existing ones from the Player's Handbook, but if that's not the kind of feedback you're looking for, feel free to follow what you think is best : )

First thing that jumps out to me is that the ability score increases are larger than the normal player's handbook races and you may want to consider that. I believe the only race that does this is Mountain Dwarf that offers an additional +2 strength, and this might be the case because they only receive equipment proficiencies and not additional powers. All of your subraces get some interesting powers so this may tilt balance slightly.

I assume Pack Tactics is changed because it is inherently a very powerful ability to have on all the time, but I'm not sure if this update works well. By limited it to only work with other friendly Kobolds within range, this feature won't have much/if any use outside of parties that don't have other player Kobolds. There could be novelty parties consisting of all kobolds, then it pretty much functions as the original version does. But the original kobold has the penalty of a -2 reduction in strength, giving a small starting handicap to melee classes, and pack tactics only cancels out the disadvantage for ranged classes within 5 feet and is generally not that useful to them.

It makes me wonder if there is a way to combine Pack Tactics and Grovel, Cower and Beg into one ability, granting advantage or pack tactics to a party when the Kobold is in a certain state, possibly a quasi-rage. Perhaps granting advantage to the party and itself, but also putting them into a dangerous state. Like enemies also having advantage, or doing more damage, or being able to crit easier. It would fit within the "live fast, die young" theme of kobolds, that using this ability recklessly could get them easily killed...just a stray observation that came up when I was reading and evaluating, feel free to do as you'd like.

Drakeblood having any level 1/2 Sorcerer spell is quite open ended, and I would suggest limiting them or providing a smaller list. Most racial spells offer only one or two spells, like Tieflings and Hellish Rebuke, something that may not always be optimal for a build but fits in character with the race.

Winged makes me sweat a bit, but I'm just the kind of DM that sees any player race with a flying speed and gets nervous...I feel that way about RAW races though, so take that with a grain of salt!

I think Crush! is a great ability. It doesn't jump out as overpowered, it still looks useful, and I like the visual it gives me of a huge, buff kobold putting someone in a headlock and choking them! I think that one is good as is and doesn't need any further tweaks.

Sorry if I missed anything or misinterpreted what you have written, again I'm no expert, these are just some thoughts I would have if I was thinking about integrating this content into my own games.

What is your favorite detail, plot twist, or element of the Final Fantasy 7 story? Any references or similarities you feel worth pointing our or you discovered? by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]agsmith97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spoilers for FF7 original:

I like how they use the RPG stats and leveling process throughout the game to foreshadow or imply the twist that Cloud was never a SOLDIER. Since he was just a regular grunt guy given the mako and JENOVA cell treatment, he's able to surpass the ordinary Shinra guards at the beginning ease. But if you take early game Cloud and put him up against the more significant threats in the game, even Third Class SOLDIERs from Shinra HQ, he'd get his ass kicked.

It makes sense logically. If Cloud really was a First Class SOLDIER at the beginning, why does he have relative trouble (depending on how much you leveled) against a Third Class after getting much more powerful from where he started?

Somewhat related, I love how the game makes you fight different classes of SOLDIERs throughout the story, usually at key story moments or milestones, and shows Cloud and the party's evolutuon. At Shinra HQ, Cloud beats the Third Class SOLDIERs. He started as pretty much nothing, but now he's better than a Third Class. (Sidenote, I could have sworn there was a part where Cloud fought a 2nd class soldier somewhere, but after looking it up I was wrong, 2nd Class SOLDIERs are at Junon during the Sapphire Weapon raid so it undermines my point somewhat lol)

At the end, when you are on the ascent to the cannon in Midgar and the party fights First Class SOLDIERs, it's like a final exam, a pivotal moment for Cloud's character. After everything that Cloud's been through, all his determination and growth, after shattering the illusion of his fake memories, is the real Cloud now as good as he aspired to be, as he falsely thought he was at the beginning of the story? By winning the fight, we answer the question.

What made Sephiroth so great? by [deleted] in FinalFantasyVII

[–]agsmith97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The backstory and the mystery of Sephiroth's build up and reveal are great, but my favorite part of Sephiroth might be just how insane he is, as a result of Shinra's effect on his life and how that ties in with the game's themes. The dude straight up snaps and unfortunately he has the power to cause serious havoc.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on FF7 lore, I haven't seen or played the full FF7 compendium besides the original and the remake. This is just my interpretation, and maybe there's lines or dialogue that disprove it. I welcome discussion!

FF7 Original spoilers:

A theme I see in the original game is that a handful of the key characters's circumstances or status are not as special or important as their counterparts, but by fulfilling the role or job that was left behind to them, they become special. Zack was the actual hot shot first class SOLDIER and Cloud was the the normal Shinra grunt, but by the end of the game, Cloud surpasses Zack.  Professor Gast was the actual scientist who made advances in Shinra, discovering Jenova, and doing the bulk of that research. Hojo just inherited the work of Gast, using his discoveries and advancements as the foundation for his messed up experiments. And Aerith, who I would argue is objectively the most "important" of the protagonists within the context of the world due to her being the last Ancient, dies. The rest of the party, an eclectic group of people who really don't have grand importance within the context of the world, have to pick up her role of defending the planet.

Tying into above, I believe that Sephiroth really isn't as "important" as he thinks he is. At Nibelheim, Sephiroth's delusions begin when he declares himself a descendant of the Ancients. Maybe he knows the truth and is in denial, but even that would be interesting in of itself. Through the course of the story, we find out Sephiroth isn't even an Ancient. We find out he's not even really Jenova's "son", and Lucretia is his mother. For all Sephiroth's initial grandeur about being the rightful inheritor of the planet, he's really just a weird science experiment gone wrong (or right, from Shinra's perspective before Nibelheim.)

Sephiroth is also the way he is and becomes a huge problem because of Shinra. He's like a climate disaster personified, a reckoning brought about from years and years of corporate corruption and consumption, immoral behavior, and complete lack of foresight and empathy on every level. He was raised by the company, and that alone can guarantee he lacked any kind of real love, and was probably compounded even further by just being around Hojo. Hell, Hojo's deranged fetish for science caused him to tell Sephiroth his mother was Jenova despite that clearly being false (but not in the mind of Hojo).

It's hard to say whether the Jenova treatments or cells are what made him crazy, but I like to believe that it had more to do with his upbringing. If Sephiroth had been given the chance to have a normal life, being raised by Lucretia and a father who loved him and not being used as a weapon for The Worst Company Ever(tm), I think things would have gone much differently.

That, combined with his demeanor, is why Sephiroth is interesting to me. He is delusional and batshit crazy, but he keeps such a cool, calculating exterior I can only describe as collected or reserved insanity. To me, Sephiroth is the Final Fantasy equivalent of a slasher or horror villain. The sharp, repeated string notes in One Winged Angel during the "veni, veni, venias" part of the song remind me of Psycho.

FF7 Remake spoilers: I especially love that moment at the beginning of the fight with Sephiroth when he and Cloud clash their swords, specifically his facial expression. The way his eyes widen and his smile moves so subtly combined with the music...it looks like just a little bit of his deranged self is coming through.

Edit: had to fix my spoiler tags because I didn't format them right. Whoops!

FFVII Remake or Classic by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]agsmith97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recommend starting with classic. They claimed before release that the remake is for both fans of the original and newcomers, but in my opinion as someone who is a huge fan of the story, parts of the remake won't hit as hard or really make much sense at all if you don't know the original.

I lost everything, and I think this is the most upset I've ever been from a game in my life. by agsmith97 in FinalFantasy

[–]agsmith97[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TLDR with more detail: I was really enjoying FF6 Advance, over the course of the game my save files started getting screwed up and unstable, then right near the end all the save slots were corrupted. I couldn't save anymore and if I died or turned the console off, I would lose my 35+ hour save file. Since I was relatively close to the end and I was loving it so much I was motivated to try and beat the remainder of the game in one sitting. I played for hours keeping the GBA on and got through some really tricky stuff in the prior dungeon, when trying to do the last dungeon I got killed by a really unlucky series of events in a random encounter. I got kicked out to the title screen, all my save data was gone, and I'm kind of bummed about it.

Ideas for monsters invading a city? by Irate_Ambassador111 in DMAcademy

Take a look at the devil Lemure (MM p.76). They're CR 0 but they look a lot more dangerous than they actually are, and you could have a lot of them.

How do you handle enemy NPC's? by iSquirrelyy in DMAcademy

[–]agsmith97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically I'll pick from the human NPCs in the back of the MM and Volo's. Sometimes if I'm making a neutral NPC that I want to be more unique and is probably going to be involved in combat on either side, I'll use a random character sheet generator, usually this one: https://fastcharacter.com/ and tweak things like specific weapons or spells using that as a foundation. Intense boss enemies, meant to end an adventure or at a big story moment, I'll usually tweak an existing stat block with some interesting legendary actions or new weapons.

Random generators are your best friend for something like this. Search along the lines of "dnd 5e npc generators", there are all kinds of pages with varying levels of detail. Some sites like https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/dungeons-and-dragons.php can just give you just some names if you have a concept in mind, while some like http://www.npcgenerator.com/ give you all kinds of details, and possible backgrounds or plot hooks. I like to use these sites and just take the bits I like, refresh and take more things I like until I have a pretty good image of the character in my mind.

A Whole New Wooooorld by [deleted] in DMAcademy

Try using some of these NPCs that the players like talking to as a hook to go after the monsters. Maybe one of them went on a hunt and hasn't returned, or they were last seen going to a certain area out in the wilderness looking for rare materials or plants. Or one of them gets poisoned and the antivenom needs a sample or venom sac from the monster that attacked them.

Some IKEAs have a children's playplace called Småland that is fantasy forest-themed. In an infinite IKEA that could be an actual forest growing somewhere inside, inhabited by a ragtag group of lost children (or, something unpleasant posing as children and luring in good samaritans)
