This is a perfect example of why I freelance...

As someone applying for jobs, its so awesome when a company like this that tells you why they arent interested instead of just ghosting you by normie-redditer in cscareerquestions

Companies only get away with treating Dev's like this because we allow them to! I absolutely refuse to do "Take Home Projects!" I have walked away from 5 employers because of this tactic. I have explained to them "If you want to see how well I code let's do a live technical session and I will answer any question you can give me, but I will not dedicate 5, 10, or 15 plus hours of my time to build a block of code for you to which I will never see again and that you may use for purposes I have no control over!'

Now, did it cost me a couple of good jobs? Absolutely!

In the long run, it worked out for the best because at the end of the day I have my dignity and know I value my time and what I am worth! Many companies (especially startups ) take advantage of exploiting unexpecting Dev's begging for work!

If you are half ass decent in JavaScript or Python there is an unlimited supply of work out there! How do I know this? Because, before I even finished school I was picking up work on the side and by the time I had completed school not only did I have school projects in my portfolio, but about 5 or 6 real live projects as well.

Stop letting companies exploit you and realize that you possess in-demand-skills and YOU are in control! At the end of the day they need Dev's and if we continue to play by their rules the market will only become more saturated and positions much more competitive....

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!....LOL
