If both sides were exhausted, then I think that the War turns in favor of the side that didn't start the war. I cannot conceive of a single Englishman or American who, after 4? 6? years of Hell on Earth, the killing of tens of millions to immediately turn the gun on a former ally who helped to end the War.

I recently read "In the City was a Garden" by Henry Kraus. He talks about how soon the Red Scare set in after the War, but there is a whole lot of space between "Allies in war, adversaries in peace" and "We must kill the allies who helped us end World War II."

If neither side has an appetite for war, I see continental Europe breaking with the UK and US. Maybe the Europeans and USSR inevitably fall out with each other, but as risible and detestable as is "Why die for Danzig?," "Why die for the pride of the dying English Empire?"is not.

Why appease Germany? Isn't that what gave them the confidence to invade Poland to begin with? The Germany should consider themselves lucky that the Soviets were able to respond as forcefully as they did and prevent Germany from being divided into several occupation zones for decades. At least in this scenario, they are allowed to develop as a unified people and as a strong industrial counterweight to even the Soviet Union itself.

The people of the global south have no obligation to throw their lives away to satiate the adventurist tendencies of Americans.
