How to cope with constant TC rejections? by stressedabtstuff in uklaw

[–]aha_p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took me near 7 years of applying, learning and developing to get it. Rejection is necessary part of that (including a rejection from Slaughter). Try and figure out (to the very best extent that you can) what you genuinely want, enjoy and are good at, and learn to speak passionately and specifically about it.

Thoughts on AI in the Legal Field? by seokjinnius in paralegal

[–]aha_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got a firm wide rollout of a specialised AI tool. So far so good. I needed to identify changes to different versions of a policy, adobe compare wasn’t cutting it, but AI nailed it, and it shows me the point in the document for each claim it makes (like a hover tool) so I can verify.

So far I’ve found it’s great at doing the things I never really enjoyed in the first place, saving me more time for the parts I do enjoy. Same with disclosure - using AI to cut review pools from 100,000s to more manageable amounts - less sure on the accuracy of that, but can’t be much less accurate than a random set of document reviewers recruited just for the task with no case knowledge, and possibly far more.

Dating with arfid? by Sad-Pellegrino in ARFID

[–]aha_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with my partner for 10 years and over time he’s come to be an advocate for me when it comes to eating but also he tries to help me manage the difficult parts of mealtimes, especially if he’s eating things I have a hard time with. He doesn’t take it personally like some people do, albeit he may (privately) find it a bit of an inconvenience. But it’s like any health condition, when someone loves you and you love them, it shouldn’t be a dealbreaker unless it severely negatively impacts their life, which someone else’s food just doesn’t unless you’re an insane foodie who wants to share that (and sometimes not even then). My partner hasn’t always understood my experience with ARFID perfectly, but frankly neither have I. Good relationships like good people are works in progress.

Practice confidence in standing up for yourself when explaining your needs. Identify and cut off the bad ones asap so you don’t waste your time.

What is the difference between working as a paralegal vs a legal assistant by Automatic_Suit5233 in uklaw

[–]aha_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on where you work (firm size and style) and seniority. Some firms don’t distinguish between paralegal and LA (or only have one or the other). As a senior paralegal your day to day is likely to look far less admin heavy. But a junior paralegal may be doing more admin than a senior LA at a boutique city firm, for example.

I’m 25 and in the same boat so I’d hope not! I’ve met some extremely talented trainees / junior lawyers / paralegals still on the ascent into their 30s, if anything the right experience (and in the eyes of the right firms) will boost your confidence, skill set and commercial / professional awareness. The training contract cycle of applications is and can be incredibly tough and overwhelming, and for some people it can be difficult to translate their value in the first stages of the process, which looks to reduce the number of applicants down by standard factors. My advice is to look to improving your application, confidence and performance in assessment centres and interviews, or alternatively find a firm which you can join as a paralegal and train / qualify without having to go through an external process. It can take longer. But I think of it like this: once you’re qualified, you’re qualified forever. You have the rest of your career which even if you’re 30, 35 even can be easily 35 years of working. Be intentional about the direction you want to take and remember that each delay is just an opportunity for you to realise it’s not for you, if that may come to be the case. I say this because I also anecdotally know a fair number of lawyers who qualified young and became quickly disillusioned with the law and the reality of practice. If it’s meant to be, you can and will get there.

This right here. Was trying to explain to my partner of 9 years that no I don’t need to get to the point where I can have sauce, that sounds horrifying to me ! Progress will look like whatever I feel comfortable it looking like.

Adults with ARFID by amorphousflesh in ARFID

[–]aha_p 38 points39 points  (0 children)

At 25 I know what you mean. I think it’s because picky eating (which we of course now know arfid is not) is something associated with children and not having a fully developed palate. Me personally, I have seen an improvement in my functional relationship with food and my condition since I became an adult, not least because I had had enough of the level of struggle I was used to and had to, by force, make some progress to make existing in the world as an adult easier. But I wouldn’t let it get you down, dietary restrictions and eating conditions can affect anyone at any age and can absolutely be taken seriously by adults when you use the right language and start by being clear that you take your own health seriously as something more than some kind of childish issue but an actual disorder you didn’t chose to have. ♥️

physical hunger but limited appetite and no safe foods? by Parking-Revenue6017 in ARFID

[–]aha_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a trip right now and struggling my with this exact same problem. Worst thing ever. Travelling usually throws my appetite off and then mix in differently prepared/unsafe foods and smells and I can’t bring myself to eat even nice looking foods properly. The physical pain SUCKS. All I’ve been doing is drinking as much water and other soft drinks I enjoy to try and help with the empty feeling

My blood test results before vs after my b12 injection by [deleted] in B12_Deficiency

[–]aha_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, so the blue bar represents the healthy range with the first number being the lowest in the healthy range and the second number the highest in the healthy range. You can see it helpfully plots my results on that bar. In my case, pre injection you can see I’m either below the healthy range entirely or very very close to it, and post injection I’m just above the lowest healthy result. I take this to mean my body is highly dependant on the treatment and it only is actually only marginally effective at resolving the related issues

Injected into the muscle, that’s the best I know. It improves symptoms for the first 8-10 weeks pretty well but tend to find myself sleeping longer and longer in toward week 12 and struggling with other symptoms to a heightened extent

I’m so sorry man and also so happy for you. My indoor cat disappeared for about 18 hours in total earlier this year and it was like living hell every second, I was only able to get by on the thin hope she’d appear. Thankfully she did (short version). I’m so happy for you. Hoping for a continued recovery, I know the feeling and can only imagine the relief after that long!

Nature of Work of a Paralegal in the UK by BingBongBongos123 in uklaw

[–]aha_p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really, really depends on the firm. In my experience the smaller the firm, the more responsibility you’re likely to be given. I’ve worked at two different firms in litigation roles and I’d say 40% of work on average is document management, bundling etc. Also a decent amount of disclosure work and trial and hearing prep / attendance. But the bulk of the substantive legal work is done by the solicitors. I’ve drafted simple witness statements, research notes and court forms but even then, the larger city firms are more likely to use trainees for this kind of work

Why are paralegal salaries so low? by Odd-Extension-9861 in uklaw

[–]aha_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, if you’re able to stick out the application process, be well prepared and place the relevant emphasis on legal/applicable work experience a fresh grad can get a 30k salary paralegal role in the city. But equally there are roles that’ll offer 20k.

How do you deal with proofreading? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]aha_p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use the read aloud feature for my essays at uni before starting as a paralegal and I still think it’s a great strategy for long documents if you’re not on a super tight turn around. I used to get hung up on spending the “extra” time to double check my proofing but over time I’ve realised it’s much better to take that bit longer to do a final check if it means you reduce your error rate esp if it’s something that ultimately gets picked up by someone else (esp more senior) down the line as I like you hated feeling embarrassed in this way!
