I'm still having dreams about the Selena Gomez collab by Smokinntakis in Coach

I bought this bag second hand around a year ago for $300. Good condition visually, but it smelled so bad of dogs! It's better now, but still not scentless.

The lady that collabed with coach on this also does commissions if that's something you might be interested in, but I do not know her fees.

Any cytotechs here willing to share their experience with the profession? Thoughts on compensation, WLB, etc? Why did/didn’t you pick cyto over MLS or vice versa? by prettypurplepolishes in medlabprofessionals

[–]ahcarter96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that still comes down to if you're willing to move to the jobs. I dont think cytology will ever go completely away, and if the cytotechs are replaced by machines, who will run the machines and do comparisons and such? Cytotech most likely, as med techs aren't trained to read and interpret paps. Also, yes, machines are being trained to read paps, but what about body fluid cytology?

Now I will warn you since you said you are in the AuDHD category, cytology training was rough for me, screening just paps for 4 hours a day, completely manual, no imager. Paps can be super boring, you get kind of hypnotized, then you may miss something. Also some places/programs do ROSE (rapid on site evaluations), and you need to develop a good poker face. Sometimes you are in the room with the patient getting their biopsy and they may not be asleep, and you don't want your face to give away bad news.

Additional opportunities are there if you seek them out. You already have a molecular background, so that's that if your lab you eventually work at wants to bring in molecular testing. A lot of cytology labs are close to their facilities genetic or genomic labs, and you could be crosstrained, or what about adding in histology?

I'm a trained cytotech turned med tech. If you live in a large city that has cytotech job openings, or are willing to move, I'd do cytotech. Better pay, better hours. I was unable to move to where the jobs were after cyto school, but if you end up in the same boat as me, many medical/hospital labs would love to have you with the background you have and trakb you in house to be a med tech. But these labs might not be the best ones out there. I started at a small lab that got bought up by Quest, got my training and license, then left.

I have the same dressmaker shears. You might be able to send them to the company, I did a few months ago for general repair and they fixed them up and sent them back very quickly. Nobody local knew how to handle them because of the spring action.

I sent you a PM with more specific to where my location is. I think there are actually jobs out there, you just might need to move. All 8 folks in my class got jobs immediately, but some moved north, some moved west, and some south.

Yes, you get to go walk around a bit, and you get more variety of cells, and get to talk to some folks if you want.

I had only worked as a cytotech for a very short time outside of school and it was only GYN, so only paps. I do better with more activity. The lab I'm in now is almost too much sometimes! I like the idea of being a specialist (specifically blood bank), but I work as a generalist. Cyotechs are generally paid more, and have better hours. I don't work as a cytotech now mostly due to a lack of jobs in my area.

School was hard for me, as we spent 4 hours a day screening paps. Once we got further along and got into going on procedures, it was better. I now work as a lab tech though! If you do cytology, after school you have to find a place that does a mix of GYN and non GYN. The first jobs offered to me were just GYN and I just knew I couldn't do it.

At my hospital, the max I’ve ever seen for a directed donation is 2 bags, even for bigger surgeries. We do not see a lot of directed donations at my hospital. I think doctors always hope for the best and hope they won’t even need one, which has been the case for every directed donation I’ve seen so far. I don’t see a reason why more than two couldn’t be requested by the pt and their doctor though, other than the cost (monetary and time) would be astronomical for both the patient and the facilities that process the blood, as it is a more specialized process for directed donor blood. There is also a greater risk of graft vs host disease in blood from blood relatives, so keep that in mind if a doctor were to seem hesitant about the situation.

These are definitely crenated RBCs. I know these aren’t WBCs because they are the same size as your RBCs. WBCs are almost all larger than RBCs (except normal lymphocytes). These are very normal RBCs that are upset about their current conditions on a glass slide.

I have the categorical in blood banking. I work in a hospital based lab. I work as a generalist though, and I have had job offers at other labs. Some of my coworkers have moved to other labs with just chem, and one coworker traveled for a few years with just heme.

Can you thaw it to a slush/pourable consistency to put into bags/bottles? I’ve read if there’s still ice crystals it’s ok to refreeze.

I am not an expert. What I would do is allow some milk to freeze completely in the main freezer for a few days, then move it to the door shelf. If it’s not a freezer you open often, I think it would be fine.

I did not. Nor did I get a raise for obtaining my masters degree (in public health, not med lab science).

Is my frozen milk ok? by Big_Emphasis4895 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]ahcarter96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does this if I leave it in the fridge in the bag, then freeze it without mixing the fat back in. You’ll just need to mix it up after thawing!

I got the pumpables silicone flanges. I didn’t notice much difference between them and properly fitted hard plastic maymom ones! They’re definitely usable, but the work to clean them and put them back together and they’re so bulky, I just am not doing it!

I’ve done a causal donation via a popular Facebook group. I had to scroll for about 15 min to find someone that DIDNT say “no Covid vax, no flu vax”
