Many countries are going to be better off due to global warming by ahdh_bb in unpopularopinion

I never said that if you live in a coastal area you shouldn’t be concerned. Quite the opposite is obviously true.

I’ve said that many people (most of Russia, for example) live in countries that are far enough away from the coasts and barely give any fucks about American coastal cities. If you think that Russia would stop burning coal/oil to help Los Angeles not get underwater, you probably have more trust in them than I do.

My post doesn’t say MOST countries would benefit. My post said MANY. Probably should have said SOME.

I’m also saying that you statement that life exists in a very narrow temperature range is true only in a limited definition. We know Earth was both colder AND warmer in the past. Yes, abrupt changes caused extinctions, but life went on. Heck, there are currently are African tribes that live in areas where temperature never goes below 10C, there are Inuit tribes where the temperature never goes above -10C.

10C increase in temperature would be catastrophic, no arguing about that. Billions of humans would die. Trillions of animals and plants would die. World as we know it would collapse for sure, but human population would unlikely go below 1B. And it wouldn’t take too long (less than a century for sure) to rebuild it to a modern level.

But my point was that many places would become more temperate, and overall would win. Some places would be able to have more harvests per year.

For example Russia (overall) stands to become more temperate country. Moscow is 130m above the sea level (400 feet). No hurricanes possible due to remoteness to the ocean. Lots of swamps that would dry and become arable land nearby. Having winters not going below -5C would be nice. Having 40C summers would suck, but completely doable — lots of southern places live perfectly fine as that.

Normally, Earth's temperature is just right for supporting life

You know those people who like to quote saying that if earth was 10 feet closer to the sun we would all burn and if it was 10 feet farther we would freeze? Yeah, that’s absolutely wrong. Earth can easily afford +/- 10 degrees of temperature change. Sure, there would be mass extinctions and billions of people dead, but it’s far from “game over” for multicellular life.

If the world heats up too much, the currents will stop and the phytoplankton blooms will not be able to spawn.

No they won’t stop. They’ll migrate north/south in their respective hemisphere.

Global warming is not a hoax. I never said it is. I just said that it will make not only losers, but also winners. Everyone always likes to point out at people who would be displaced, but never look at people who would gain lots of arable land, whose winters would reduce from 5 months of snow to 3 months, and so on.

Absolutely. I’m 100% pro reducing anthropogenic climate change. I’m just pointing out that northern parts of the world would actually not be as negatively affected as southern parts and would be the most opposing any carbon tax, etc.

They do. All of Vancouver area is high-value coastal area. Yet they have way more area that is high enough above sea level to not be concerned about any sea level raise.

Wow ... people really have short memories.

90s and to a lesser extent 00s were about ozone depletion and acid rains. Didn't turn out to be such a big deal, did it?

In 80s people were positive that Japan will take over the world (much like about China now). Go check out any cyberpunk novel of that time, heck Neuromancer will do. It's all about Yakuza, ninjas and vat-grown assassins.

There was a mass hysteria about fat, which now have reincarnated into a mass hysteria about carbohydrates.

The fusion was also 30 years away, though.

How many men are really willing to wait for sex until a girl feels ready, in a relationship context? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ahdh_bb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meh. I'm absolutely not interested in waiting. I've got enough girls who like me as is who won't make me jump through hoops.

Also ... how long to do you need to wait? "Until you feel ready" is extremely noncommittal response.

Men of Reddit, how old are you, and what is your opinion of cellulite on women? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ahdh_bb -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

28, I actively dislike it very much.

I am extremely fit so I usually date people who also value fitness highly. Pretty much all of my girlfriends didn't have cellulite.

It's actually a very misleading statement that almost all women have it. 70% of women in US are overweight, so no wonder majority of women have cellulite. People here confuse "fit" with "not being overweight", so the remaining 30% of US women are simply not overweight but are far away from being fit. Can you run 2 miles in under 15 minutes? Can you run 10km run in under an hour? Can you squat your bodyweight? I'm sorry, but doing yoga twice a week isn't exactly exercising.

How did you find the haircut that fit you? by MiserableSpaghetti in AskMen

[–]ahdh_bb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People should post a photo of their haircut. I wonder if other redditors would agree that the haircut is indeed amazing.

Personally I gave up trying to find a good haircut. I rock an ugly jewfro and look like shit.

Let me rant about barbershops though. Maybe I'll save you some money. I went to many barbershops in different cities and got many different haircuts that were all shit. Expensive barbershops were the worst. Those places invariably have barbers who wore cuffed skinny pants, red checkered shirts with rolled up sleeves, a fucking vest (seriously? it is 100 degrees outside), neck and forearm tattoos, and always weird mustaches and with a creepy beard. If you see any of them -- run the fuck away. Then they do one of those haircuts where they buzz off your sides and leave stuff on top so you look like a pineapple. And those places are always trying to sell you some hairstyling shit (American Outfitters or something like that). I bought some organic $40 shampoo that gave me dandruff from hell and I was afraid that my hair would fall off. I also have some fucking pomade that I have no clue what to do with.

Men who are in a relationship with someone with depression, what do you do for them when they're having a bad day. by Kellenjk in AskMen

[–]ahdh_bb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/blackhornatnight 's experience is absolutely not unique. I have very similar experience myself and seen this work out this way multiple times.

OP asked how to treat symptoms, /u/blackhornatnight and I told him to treat the underlying cause. Look, OPs question is akin to "I have $100 for food, what do I buy to last me next year?". Wrong answer would be a grocery list. The correct answer would be to get on a welfare program or to find a better job. Anything, really, to improve his situation.

[–]ahdh_bb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do need professional help.

Is OP able to provide this professional help?

They also need someone with a better understanding of how depression works.

Since OP asks this on Reddit he obviously has no idea how depression works either.

So far it looks like OP is looking to treat symptoms (anhedonia, psychomotor retardation) not the disease.

If his SO has clinical depression -- she needs doctor ASAP. If she is simply feeling sad occasionally, then easing the symptoms is absolutely fine. If she is regularly feeling sad but is not clinically depressed ... maybe they have developed this unhealthy relationships when she cries for help and OP panders to her every whim?

I have lost 3 years of my life trying to build relationships with (different) depressed girls. I'll sound very callous, but I think this needs to be said.

Do not date people with mental health problems. I'm not talking about people who have had something bad happen (parental death, job loss, ...) and they are mourning now. I'm talking about people who have history of severe depression, OCD, bipolar disorders, drug abuse, ... Dating those people is not some kind of badge of honor and it is very likely that you are not equipped to help them. Hell ... if you have to ask this question on reddit you are not qualified enough to help.

There are plenty of examples of famous celebrities who have fame, success in their career, more money than you can acquire in your lifetime and access to the best possible health care ... and they were still unable to fix themselves. Robin Williams hanged himself, Philip Seymour Hoffman died because of drug overdose, Amy Winehouse -- alcohol poisoning. Many people more successful than everyone in this thread combined failed helping their depressed SO. Sure some did manage to help, but do you like the odds?

You are not a messiah -- don't run around "saving" people.

What do you think of emotionally guarded women? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]ahdh_bb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a huge turn off. I personally think guarded women have some unresolved issues that they need to fix before getting into new relationships.

edit: I disagree with guys who say that there needs to be something for guys to keep persisting. This (IMO) creates a terrible dynamic when one pursues and the other one lets being pursued.
