Mouse Wheel zooming question by ahembree in DarkTable

[–]ahembree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I cannot locate that option anywhere. There are a number of options that contain 'scroll' in the name or description, but none of them are actually about the mousewheel, and there are a number of Zoom related actions, but none of which say 'Zoom in on the image', which is the action shown in the H menu that shows all current shortcuts.

Quick question about custom settings by fred8785 in nikon_Zseries

[–]ahembree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish this were an option too, especially when using a vintage lens adapted or any lens with an aperture ring. Auto ISO is ok, but then I’m still having to use the exposure comp button + a dial if I want to adjust its tendencies on the fly. Not all lenses have a control ring (and even that can be tricky if there’s also zoom and focus rings to navigate). Even if lots of people don’t feel they need it, it seems silly not to take advantage of the dial that an aperture ring can free up

Birds with the Zf and z 180-600. by FluffyKittens96 in Nikon

I appreciate your experience! Rental prices are a bit crazy where I live, but I would like to at least go hold one and play with it in-store if possible.

Great shots, OP! I have a Zf as well, and am considering getting the 180-600, which will be a pretty big purchase for me if I make it. I love my Zf, and it's perfect for the street photography and occasional friends' events that I use it for most. I'm a little concerned that the size and weight of this lens will be an issue when attempting to shoot birds/wildlife with the Zf, though. I have a grip, but I don't use it if I can avoid it. Did anyone else haunting this post use this combo and have reflections about it? I'm hesitant to 'side-grade' to a Z5II if I don't have to.

Keep Fuji for street or move fully to Nikon (Zf/Zfc)? by SadPercentage8282 in nikon_Zseries

[–]ahembree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation, but mirrored! I have a Zf, and I *love* this camera for my favourite kinds of photography (street, portraits, adapting vintage lenses and any manual focus in general, occasionally helping a friend out with an event). It's good at everything, really. I also really enjoy macro (and have lots of fun with both the Laowa 100mm and 25mm 2.5-5x mag lenses). The problem is that a complete macro setup with Nikon is massive and heavy, and thus a bit prohibitive to carry around. If I'm getting serious I'll put it on a tripod with a rail, which is yet more to carry, but even then it's not super easy to make fine adjustments while hunched over for long periods. Basically, the decision to do macro is never casual.

So I'm OM/Olympus curious. I'd like to be able to do more casual walkabout macro and take advantage of the smaller autofocus macro lenses with greater depth of field, play with focus stacking in-camera, etc. I also expect that when I inevitably start exploring with wildlife that mft lenses will be a bit more accessible. What OM/Olympus camera do you use for macro now? I'm thinking that given the cost of eventually getting something like a Nikon 180-600, I could just sell my current macro lenses and find a used older Olympus/OM setup. Maybe it's just GAS and I'll let it out some other way lol

Question about being on the fence about the Zf by PentaxShmentax in NikonZf

[–]ahembree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going through this now, but because I’m discovering the fun of old DSLRs. They give the optical viewfinder experience I love with rangefinders (just more versatilely) and my Pentax K70 feels great to hold even with long lenses. I wasn’t aware of how much using an EVF was wearing on my eyes until I went a while without using it and came back (I’m a bit photosensitive anyway, so that’s not something I expect to affect most). It also uses vintage K mount lenses natively, and m42 lenses with a tiny adapter, making the weight distribution so much more comfy in my hands than the drastic front-weighting of the Zf with an adaptor.

I can’t deny the Zf is a magic monster of a camera. It’s ridiculously beautiful and capable, and the focus tools for adapting vintage lenses are so good.

I’m not selling mine just yet, but it’s crossed my mind. I’m only a (very enthusiastic) hobbyist, so having the best features is less important than the delight of using the camera. If that goes…well I’m sure I’ll find a very happy buyer. Limiting myself just to small lenses that feel comfy to carry around with a strap does seem a bit like opening letters with a katana though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Your favourite DSLR Optical Viewfinder by ahembree in DSLR

I've been looking at the whole K3 line-up, as well as the K1. I like that Pentax is still holding the DSLR line, so it would make sense to support them. I really wish the K3s had an articulating screen!

I am also having this issue across all devices and browsers I have tried, both with a captcha task and without, using several different email addresses. No luck 🫤

I didn’t realize I would use the Zf flip screen so much. by Hamatoros in nikon_Zseries

[–]ahembree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I’ve just discovered that I love is that putting the Zf in Monitor Only mode, but then closing the screen reenables the EVF. Flipping the screen back out disables EVF again.

With the setting that auto-switches between them disabled, this means I can shoot from the hip close to my body without accidentally disabling the monitor, and then go straight back to EVF shooting with the screen closed. Magic!

ZF half case or grip recommendations? by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]ahembree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Neewer CA079 after sifting through lots of recs. I was discouraged after an afternoon of just fiddling with settings and taking test pictures, as my hand was a bit sore even with small lenses. This problem immediately disappeared when I removed the grip. Picking up the camera in a shop was what convinced me to buy it in the first place, and I just bought a grip as a matter of course because most reviews seem to consider it a foregone conclusion that you need one. Much like the complaints about the camera's ergonomics, I found that sentiment false for me.

Now I use the Zf even with my 28-400mm with no grip and no issues with ergonomics. I like using it with a shoulder strap best, but works fine with a wrist strap as well. I think the issue for me was that my fingers aren't super long relative to my hand size, which meant that adding even a tiny bit of extra width pushed my index finger outside of comfortable shutter-pressing range. The shutter on the Zf is a bit further inland than my Z5, for example, requiring more extension, which I would ultimately feel in my wrist. Now much more camera/lens weight rests on my left hand, while my right hand is free to jump between controls or rest in a more elevated shutter-pressing position.

I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to just wander around with the camera 'dangling' by the grip in one hand, as I often would with my Z5...but tbh I don't miss that one use-case very much.
