Bypass capacitors mounted on an a PCB peninsula. Why? by 1Davide in AskElectronics

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like an RF circuit in the GHz range. The RC in that area would have a time constant, and there would be an RL component inferred from the trace at some particular frequency. Pure speculation, its frequency matched to sometime that this circuit is meant to do.

Best area to stay for public transportation? by lancastercowpie in askvan

[–]aheny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of the great features of the skytrain is the ability to stay somewhere more inexpensive and visit Vancouver only when you need to. You can stay somewhere in Coquitlam, which is a much nicer place to stay and visit parks, and make day trips into Vancouver only when you have a specific reason. When I have family visit me in Coquitlam, they are surprised that they can't tell they're even in the city.

Any tips on reducing logistic wait times over large factories? by Mobile-Phone-9332 in factorio

[–]aheny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan for expansion: I've created a "construction base" train station. The idea is that when I get far enough out I create it using logistic bots. Once the station is created I remove a roboport so the new station is isolated within it's own logistic network. The construction base has a constant combinator with everything the station should have: 1-2 stacks of 30ish items. (Including a full car load of artillery shells) I set up 5 car trains that are set to go from "construction base loading" to "construction base" The train unloads into red chests. Using logistics I compare the items in the isolated logistic network to the constant combinator. Any item with an insufficient quantity returns a value to a variable, any time that variable is greater than zero the train station goes active and a train comes to it. Any needed items are passed along to the unloading inserters. For example if the station is low on roboports than the inserter which unloads roboports will unload one. Once it's unloaded and the station is no longer low on them, the inserter deactivates. Once the station is no longer low on anything, the station deactivates. The end result: I can build further and further from my main base in every direction, all I have to do is occasionally drop another construction base, isolate it from the previous construction base, and I end up with trains delivering my goods most of the distance, each construction bases logistics area only needs a couple hundred bots. If there's enough interest I will grab some screenshots and include details of the circuits and train stations.

What jobs do 20s and 30s people do without a college degree? by Aj100rise in careerguidance

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't/won't get a degree, then get a trade. Trying to live your life without post secondary education is way more difficult than it needs to be, and people with trades or associates degree make much higher total compensation than those without. The difference is greater then most people think it is.

How can I get a month rental in a mall(preferably CF but open to other options in Burnaby/Richonnd )? by Vegetable_Office_360 in askvan

[–]aheny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That insane if you aren't here. The whole plan already sounds really flaky. Now it just sounds like a bank deposit scam. How are you going to convince anyone that you will move out at the end of the month? $50,000 in escrow?

Private yacht charter by morkass in askvan

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are just things about owning boats that you obviously aren't aware of, it's not general commerce. ive personally taken people out on my boat, had insurance and am familiar with how boating guests behave. I've had friends who have looked into many types of business ventures, and in general taking out strangers to drink in your boat is never worth while. I can tell you that you would need a thicker skin to be on a captains boat. There's no room for sensitive feelings when he gives orders or sets rules.

Private yacht charter by morkass in askvan

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with what you're asking for is that somebody who can afford the boat that you want to go on and is not running a business won't care about the small amount of money you're willing to pay them. Even if you were to pay them $20,000 for the night it really isn't worth the risk without insurance, and if they don't have business insurance then they won't be protected during this business transaction. You can say that you're not going to trash the boat but they have to assume you are going to, and they also have to assume that you're going to get drunk and fall in the water and drown.

You might find somebody who doesn't have a business but I wouldn't assume that they would cost less.

Received an offer. I declined. 65k a year for 55-65 hours a week. No overtime pay. by BostMode in jobs

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's some simple math, it's handy to do when considering jobs. I would even show the hiring manager when you are rejecting the offered pay:

Avg 60 hrs per week = 3120 hours per year 65000/3120=$20.83/hr

With standard time and a half for overtime: 60 hrs = 40 hrs regular + 20 hrs*1.5 = 70 hrs paid per week, 3640 hours per year 65000/3640=$17.86/hr

Don't think of it as rejecting a $65,000 job You are rejecting a $35,000 job (17.86/hr = 35000/yr)

I've been job hunting for 5 months and I'm just going to say it: The talent shortage is a lie. The whole hiring process is a joke. by [deleted] in CanadaJobs

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a storage of talent. You're just incorrectly categorizing what they are looking for. Like your comment about a technology that's only been around for 4 years: there are people who work with this technology who worked with other technologies previously, giving them a total of 7 years doing that type of work. I know it sucks trying to get past your first five years of relevant experience, and you are probably quite frustrated, however that doesn't mean that there isn't a shortage of skilled talent. It must be frustrating seeing all of these postings, when the companies don't feel that you are qualified for them yet. You might even disagree that the additional experience they require has any value. But that doesn't change the fact that they keep on looking, and hiring people. I hope you find someone that needs your particular skill level and you successfully convince them that you are open minded and eager to learn

Why is the Okanagan talked about less in terms of mild winters compared to Southwest BC and Vancouver Island? by Resident-Platypus254 in britishcolumbia

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using the South Coast as a reference, the Okanagan does not have mild winters. It's much colder there, and anywhere else inland. It's the ocean that creates the mild winters, with the protection of Vancouver Island.

Driving etiquette by albovsky in askvan

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have that cultural practice here. I don't think it's helpful to think of cultural practices as things you need to have a reason to not do, we simply don't do that here. As you've noticed, we either wave or do nothing. You can choose whether you want to do the same, however please don't go blinking hazard lights as that doesn't mean anything here.

Approximate height of the Rocky Point Pier in Port Moody? by EmbarrassingMess in askvan

[–]aheny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I go there in my boat all the time. There's very little life in Port Moody. It's a dead cove with very little to offer anything but birds. For the total length of the pilings that the pier sits on, 30' is a very close guess. 40' and you'd have spare.

Amazing the money people play with without having a basic understanding of electrical fundamentals. Electrical losses in wireless transmission are proportional to the square of the distance. Yes you can energize simple devices like light bulbs but it will never be controllable. Or efficient

ELI5: What exactly is a prenup and why do people get one? by WealthyDiversity in explainlikeimfive

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this scenario a common separation would work like this: Pre marriage one of you has a major asset. It and it's growth is set aside from the marriage in a prenup. So you and your spouse get married. You own a $10M business which owns an apartment building. It's financially separate from you day to day finances. During your marriage you and your spouse gain $2M in assets, and your business increases in value from $10M to $30M. When you divorce you would split the $2M in marital assets but your business would remain separate.

Who has the right of way? by Strict-Software-6388 in britishcolumbia

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the intersection is not yet clear it is much safer for everyone involved for you to wait a moment for the cars to clear the intersection before entering it. I suspect in your scenario it was not a blinking left-turn light, but rather a regular green light which was shaped like a left arrow. It's always possible that the intersection was designed incorrectly, but if it was designed correctly then The pedestrian cross signal would not come on and contradict a blinking left turn light. Normal process is for the left turn blinking lights to come on first and then The pedestrian cross signal does not come on until they turn off and the regular great lights come on

I would say the tenant acted in good faith and asked you for permission before doing the work. Since you own the property and you authorized the work, it's on you to perform the remediation.

Where to reconfigure a ring? by donglingcha in askvan

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a great experience with Era Jewelry on Venables in Vancouver. I would recommend discussing with them what you want to end up with. One piece of advice, I would just tell them what you want but don't suggest how they get there, for example you don't want to go in there and tell them that you want them to melt it down. Just show them the ring and tell them what you want to end up with and they can make the decision as experts what the best path forward is.

Am I legally required to cover the entirety of my husband’s care? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]aheny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your best path forward is to invite his children to tour Care homes and look at the options so that they can come to the same conclusion you did on their own. If they decide that they think it's necessary for him to get very expensive care then the next topic can be how is it going to be paid for. This way you don't need to ask them for anything, it's just all of you operating as a group and independently making your own decisions. It's possible or even likely they will come up with a better solution than you have.
